So this Target Release, Stupidest Idea?

By Beatty, in X-Wing

Who cares? Honestly, I just wanted my new core set. You can look up the DCPI as most targets in my area have it listed as in stock, but are not participating in the toy release.

Just buy it, what does it matter if your LGS didn't get it first. If that matters to you, then just wait. Complaining about it doesn't do anyone any good.

Meh. There's no real reason to need it on the very first day of release. Wait and either support your FLGS or get it cheaper online, whichever you prefer.

As I posted earlier the distributors get the core set 9/16 so the stores are looking at a 9/17- 9/18 at the earliest. That's only two weeks but two weeks for a gamer is murder.

Yeah, i'm betting on them showing up in smaller stores after the 20th. And that is kind of grim, as i've been waiting for this patiently since the first leaks.

And my area has a big X-Wing crowd and there are only so many Targets so they will go fast.

But if all you see is someone complaining then sorry you don't get it. Also complaining about complaining solves nothing. Not a complaint just pointing it out,

Gotta get that fix. Scratch that itch. Gonna get the shakes soon without a lil hit...

We should all care about big box stores and Internet discounters getting preferential treatment over the real value adding resellers. It will hurt our hobby.

Stores that hold events generally aren't the type of business that are making anyone rich, but they are the biggest driving force in expanding and supporting the market.

FFG should take the time and effort to figure out how to legally give preference to the good LGSs. It can be legally done with a little effort. Our LGS certainly made a lot of sales through other resellers on X Wing and Armada because of inability to get enough product. Eventually, guys who own these stores are just gonna quit. The good ones can mostly get better jobs or go into better businesses whenever they decide to.

It's easy, and foolish, to look at a spreadsheet and think you made a lot of sales off a deal with Target. It's BS. FFG likely made less margin than if they had sold those boxes to their better partners, let them build the reputation of the game, and then let the other resellers push it out to the general market. If the big boxes play tough, then tell them to stuff it because eventually Wal Crack and the like will kill companies the size of FFG and not care at all.

This wasn't FFGs call. It was Disney.

I don't think you understand, this was Disney's event, not FFG. To Disney, X-Wing is a Star Wars toy and Star Wars toys were sold by these stores. Like it or not, enough people didn't care and went out and bought them anyway.

It's called venting. And I laid out my point in a logical-ish manner. I wasn't raging but after a day of calling around to game stores to get info then surfing through my groups to get more info it got a little frustrating that no one knew what was going on until just this hour. No emails or anything.

And my area has a big X-Wing crowd and there are only so many Targets so they will go fast.

But if all you see is someone complaining then sorry you don't get it. Also complaining about complaining solves nothing. Not a complaint just pointing it out,

First, I don't think you understand the futility of your venting though. Disney is in the market of selling toys, so it doesn't give a crap about dealing with tons of small mom & pop specialty shops for it's big launch.

Second, how have you not heard that Target, Walmart, and Toy'r'Us were the only stores partaking and only certain stores. I don't think you really did do any research. A quick Google search turns that up real fast, including pages that will tell you exactly which retailers are participating. It seems like you are completely misunderstanding how business works. Just because you see it as a miniatures game sold at specialty stores doesn't mean that Disney executives see them as anything more than toys. Go where Disney sells toys. Also, this.

Thank you S1n

Ouch,

Well I got mine, but I do know there were those that didn't get theirs. It sort of remind me of those Black Friday scams like Door Busters where they get only a few of the products advertise that sell out in the first minuet because stock was purposefully low. Once in odds are you would buy something. The Target I went to had a quarter of their stock in the "Force" section and the rest you had to walk across to the other side of the store. I see what was done there. <_<

Also what's up with the Complaint Policing that has been happening? It is not called for and smells of High Horse syndrome.

Again Go Read What I Have Already Said Before Trying To One Up Me. It will save us all the time.

It's fairly obvious why only big chains got product for this.

Chain stores are much easier for Disney to keep tabs on and control. Thousands of little shops, far more difficult.

because X-wing can do no wrong.

Now if you really want to get this forum angry you got to do better than "Greedo Shot First"

For example: "Lets all go play Attack Wing!" :P

Yup so easy to keep tabs on them there was absolutely no leaks on Reddit. ;)

How is this different from when FFG sold Wave IV and Wave VII ahead of the street date when the rest of us have to wait a few weeks to a month for them?

Leaks are free publicity.

What Disney would want to stop is people selling early.

Probably because Gencon was a more fitting venue than Toy section at major retailers. Will this bring more people to the game, well with the current "Door Buster" stock quantities the answer is no because it is already sold out to people who already know about the game. Now I have heard stories of people who were introduced to X-wing through buying the core set at major retailers (heard Target to be store specifically mentioned) so if they restock in quantities and keep them on display then maybe we will get some new players. However if Major retailers restock and throw them in the back with the rest of the Star Wars toys then it is hard to say.

What early release? You mean GenCon? A lot of game companies bring new stuff to GenCon but that's not a gimmick sale, it's the largest promotional games sale in the country and the best time to make new announcements and show off new products. It happens every year and I know which of my companies are selling new stuff early.

So your point is that Target or any major chain stores are inappropriate venues for advance sales of XWMG products? I can understand if you're an LGS owner trying to pull in new customers but it's rather irrelevant to me where they sell their products. What's relevant to me about this is I have to wait a few weeks to get my hands on it while some of you in the US were able to run out to Target to get it already; not that I'm really complaining.

I guess I don't understand the reason for putting up a fuss for a once in a blue moon and out of the ordinary Star Wars Toy launch event.

Probably on the definition and treatment of the word "Toy". Now are all games are "toys" well you can argue they functioned the same way as toys in providing simple entertainment much like Video games were placed in toy stores ever since the classic NES days. However should all games be treated as "Children's Toys". Well I don't think you would want any child under the age of 10 playing cards against humanity, not to mention how often are people annoyed about parents buying their child M rated games like Call of Duty only to hear their plethora of profanity over the voice chat.

For us the better question asked is how much exposure does this give X-wing and bring new players to the game. Tough to say, hopefully some, but definitely not with the midnight event.

I understand Target made a deal with Disney for early release but doing so while not informing the LGS's about any of it until 12 this morning kind of chaffed me up.

But then some had to throw out insults so the thread grew into this bad thread.

I think it's a little **** that international players won't be able to do anything for at least another two weeks.

Either release it worldwide or don't. simple as that.

Only a small number of stores did the midnight release. Just go in the morning and pick one up. I went to a midnight release and casually picked up a couple copies. They had plenty. The other Targets who didn't participate will have a bunch in the morning. I'm stretching to figure out what you're complaining about. The release was fun, and everyone got to hang out with some like minded people. We got our copy 8 hours before some others will.... this is not a big deal.

Well international commerce does have its complications. Everything from import taxes to black market dealings plague international trade making a world wide all at once release very difficult.

I used to be on the other side of this rock too once or twice, I understand the pain mate.
