So this Target Release, Stupidest Idea?

By Beatty, in X-Wing

Ok I know Target worked something out with Disney for first release but from the sounds of it there is not enough stock to cover a real release. Now the Game Stores weren't even told about this new Core Set and besides those who climed over each other to get their's what about the rest of us?

This release is honestly the stupidest marketing idea and we need the rest of the world to get a piece of the action asap.

Walmart exclusive coulda been worse.

Or Disney Stores only.

The rest of you can get them at 8am from all the non-event Targets.

Blame Disney. And if you want to see true disappointment, the figures were all gone in 2.5 seconds. Those were some sad peeps. X-Wing was still on the shelf at 12:15 where I was, no climbing required.

meh

they'll be out eventually, local stores apparently knew ahead of time that a new core set was coming

anyway, yall can sit tight. There's nothing absurdly broken or game changing in the box apart from the new damage deck, so it's not like your games will change that much

not that I don't understand the allure of new shininess (or that I have my own box :() but this core set isn't as revolutionary as the more...enthusiastic speculations suggested

thank god for loose lips, eh ;)?

They say there is no such thing as bad publicity. How many active threads are there with "Target" all over the place in them right now?

Yeah, I think you may be overestimating the demand for such a release. Some have mentioned that other retailers will be able to order the stuff tomorrow, meaning likely delivery is for next week.

And after the first go around, it isn't too surprising that Target may not be getting 50 per store.

Like Disney gives more than two craps about FFG's one product when they have Disney Store exclusives, Hasbro towing a fleets of plastic across the Pacific, and hype intensified to full power.

FFG is probably pulling its hair out trying to appease Darth Mouse.

True but having a box store have exclusive rights on a popular game like X-Wing is suicide if they don't get it into the LGS's soon. Target doesn't care one bit about games and orders won't be big enough. Watch, by the end of the weekend most forum members won't be able to get their hands on one because their local Target is out and won't get any in for a while. It will be a total fiasco.

Target is actually trying to move in to the tabletop game market a lot more agressively than you think. My Target has games that my LGS has been trying to get for months to no avail.

Well my big LGS has been kept in the dark and as of today, I checked, they had no ordering info or even notice about the release.

The Episode VII products are three SKUs, of which Target is getting exactly one.

Distributors are posting the option to order all three SKUs on Friday.

The local game stores will do just fine with this wave. Yes, they missed out on the "day-1" release hysteria, but let's be real, how many FLGS are even able to do a 'midnight release' event? Compared to how many Target stores can (and, indeed, do several times a year)? They'll have them within a week, AND the additional SKUs in the wave that Target doesn't have, besides.

And no, I never do a Black Friday shopping trip.

Release article says other stores this month.

You're right. I just really really hate these stupid gimmicky sales that cause nothing but hassle.

And no, I never do a Black Friday shopping trip.

Awesome. Can you please convince everyone you know to not shop on Black Friday either? I work retail and would really enjoy Thanksgiving with my family for once instead of taking a nap from noon to 4 before heading in to my 6pm to 6am shift.

"Now the Game Stores weren't even told about this new Core Set and besides those who climed over each other to get their's what about the rest of us? "
The release I went to was orderly and fun...there were members of the 501st and I got to meet Star Wars fans.

I also had no problem getting 2 core sets (one for me and one for a friend)

your post sounds childish and petty..."boo-hoo I couldn't get my new toys so they are dumb"

Try again.

Agreed....this Target thing: bit of a sh!tshow.

I went and everyone was nice and there was no pushing and shoving. I got two Core Sets and a lightsaber. I missed out on a 4-foot Chewey. That was the main reason I went and for the off-chance there was Force Friday X-Wing exclusive stuff.

Not exactly Black Friday insanity. More like "I've got nothing else better to do on Thursday at midnight other than sleep so what the heck."

Well good to hear that everything was civil in stores. I am not able to get to a store until the morning and I am not sure if my closest Target will have any. And I know I am not alone in that situation.

Also just got word from a source that the distributors won't have the Core Set until 9/16, so the other stores are looking at a late Sept. release.

I think it's a little unfair to say Target does not care about games. They at least carry some Hobby games and give the industry some needed exposure. As for the X-Wing product, since they have an exclusive and there is a maddening hungry to consume product. Target will likely sell out of there initial purchases. This could cause them to reup their order and we will see a replete of them dumping later at below $15. It's like a double edge sword "screwed the FLGS on the way in and will undercut them on the way out".

I just went to the Olathe, KS midnight release event. The only Target in the entire Kansas City metro area to do one. They had 12 total core sets. They sold out in 5 minutes. I showed up 30 mins early to no avail. And to or row I will be at work before other Targets open. Ah, well.

Target needed more product AND space in the first place.

Meh. There's no real reason to need it on the very first day of release. Wait and either support your FLGS or get it cheaper online, whichever you prefer.

I will be more clear. Clerks at Target only stock the products and the ordering is most likely done electronically now. There is no costumer investment like Game Stores have.

That's the difference between a small store and a Box Store, the box store just fills orders out without knowledge of who they are selling to and what questions they have. A Small Store wants your business and will go out of their way to find out answers, do special orders and even support the game with game nights and tournaments.

That is what I meant.
