Confused . . . . "Being of Ib"

By Glasgow Scotland, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

We are totally confused by one monster that came with Innsmouth -- the "Being of Ib."

Here's the stats from the monster token--

Text: "Investigators receive -1 penalty to Horror checks. If Bokrug awakens, his Physical Resistance is upgraded to Physical Immunity."

Horror check: (dash) Combat check: (dash) Toughness (blank) Sneak (dash)

------------

We are totally lost. How do you kill it? Under what circumstances do "investigators recieve -1 penalty to Horror checks"?

Who is Bokrug? Is he one of the new GOO's that came with Innsmouth? We have not had a chance to test them all out yet.

----------------

Here's a challenge question for the sharpies. In the fictional background, who or what was the "Being of Ib?" From which story by which writer did this monster find its origins? This is one of the oddest monsters yet.

Beings of Ib are only used with Bokrug. I think they have Spawn monster symbols on the front (red circle) so I hope you haven't been placing them into the monster cup!

They are placed on his sheet, and remain there the entire game. You never fight the monsters, and only remove them by "buying them off," as per the rules on Bokrug's card. Each being imposes a different penalty on the players (such as -1 on all Horror checks), and each will upgrade Bokrug when he awakens. Buying any of them off cancels both effects, and the Being is returned to the box.

WTH, I swear I answered a very similar question not long ago.

Remeber Dam, you and I are both the twins of Zhar. When I answered this question right now, it WAS you answering it recently! Also this means that I'm technically talking to myself.

They appeared in "The Doom that Came to Sarnath" by Lovecraft himself. The people who lived in Ib worshipped Bokrug.

Spoiler alert!

The people of Sarnath destroyed Ib and took the idol of Bokrug as a trophy. 1000 years later, when celebrating the destruction of Ib, disaster befell the city leaving only rubble and the idol of Bokrug.

You did. I think some people are only seeing images of the Ib, and not seeing Bokrug.

Do you know they have dimensional symbols? what's the use? preocupado.gif

They really should have been made into cards, not monsters. It's unnecessarily confusing.

well the monster movement symbol on the beings of Ib show the dreamlands gate symbol and that is where they are from. In keeping with all other monster counters i supose the designers thought they should be consistent and include the movement / gate symbol just in case a later rule or rule combination ever crops up in the future that would use the beings of ib in another way. perhaps something that puts them on the board and gives them stats like a herald or a scenario or even a mythos card perhaps
