2nd Annual HOTH Charity Tournament

By sunny ravencourt, in X-Wing Organized Play

Heartland Xwing Players, it's time to gear up for Worlds with the second annual HOTH - Heartland Open Tournament for Henry. October 24th, Coralville, Iowa hosted at Geek City!

In collaboration with many many helpful faces, (Jason Clark, Dave Curtis, Patrick Wilcox) we're going to hold our second charity tournament for the Extra Life foundation on October 24th, benefiting the University of Iowa Children's Hospital. Last year was a tremendous success and was covered by KCRG (seen http://www.kcrg.com/subject/news/star-wars-table-game-raises-funds-for-ui-childrens-hospital-20141005). We raised over $1200 dollars and had past world champions and other national and regional high-caliber players attending. Players attended from all over the midwest to challenge themselves prior to Worlds.

The Facebook Event page is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/118846148467001/

Start times: 10AM on-site registration and check-in. Player meeting 9:50 with start immediately thereafter. Number of rounds based on attendance followed by a cut depending on entries. Capacity will be limited, but we hope to have around 50.

Regarding the Charity, Extra Life is a national organization dedicated to raising money for children's hospitals nationwide. My page on the Extra Life Website is http://www.extra-life.org/participant/HOTH My contribution for fundraising is to host an xwing tournament. Making it a regional event last year was a fabulous way to bring together a lot of great players while benefitting the hospital of my choice, the UI Children's Hospital.

On a personal level, my son Henry was born without a right pulmonary artery. His lung was not connected to his heart at birth, six weeks early. Through unbelievable efforts, a radical surgery by the late Dr. James Davis which was recently published in a journal of medicine, and state of the art facilities at the UI, Henry is a happy and healthy 4-year-old with no artificial parts in him and a spectacular heart and lungs. I owe my world to the UI Children's Hospital which I why I've selected them as my recipient for any funds we raise through the charity.

There will be more news to come but if you wish to help at all it is highly encouraged. You can either donate directly on the website to the charity, or if you're really helpful you can donate towards prize support in the form of anything you can think of. Simply send me an email at [email protected] and I'll get you my address and you can mail anything you want to me to either be included in prize support or silent auctioned. I'm talking anything here. Ships, art, lint, whatever. Maybe not lint. Basically since this is a charity tournament, we need your support to make sure this good cause gets the support it deserves.

So let's fly some ships and blow each other up..... for the kids!

REGISTRATION: If you want to register, go to www.extra-life.org/participant/HOTH and go to "Support Me". When you make a donation, go to "Other" amount and put in 20.00. Then in the message type Entry Fee so that we can add you. You can also donate in cash to myself (James McDonald) or Jason Clark (Geek City Games) or Patrick Wilcox. If you pay your entry fee the day of via credit, it's $23 (tax is a bummer). SPACE IS LIMITED, but all donations of any amount are welcome.

More to come!

TL;DR Send star wars or other geek stuff for prize support! Help out a great cause. Email me at [email protected] and I'll get you the address. Donate to www.extra-life.org/participant/HOTH

I believe of the top 32 at Worlds last year, 8 played in the HOTH tournament. The level of competition and camradery are both on very high levels. Hope to see you there!

Hey all. Just a heads up. As we get closer I thought I'd put this out there for people who want to support it, but can't attend for whatever reason. I put this on facebook and I think it'll adequately explain how you can support us. :)

Hey all. Want to support a charity but don't feel like doing any of the following:
1: working hard
2: being all "preachy"
3: spending money that could be put towards
a) burritos
b) porn
c) your children
d) christmas
4: Any combination of the subset of #3 with the exception of b+c.

Well do I have an opportunity for YOU! The HOTH charity, my annual fundraiser for the UI Children's hospital is coming up shortly and it's so easy to support. I don't even want your money! Well, I'll take your money too, but what I really want is this:

I want your geek crap.

That's right! The HOTH charity involves a tournament of xwing miniatures on October 24 and we need PRIZE SUPPORT! The best part is that we all know that this is for charity, and the players think geek crap is cool! (because it is).

So if you've got some star wars stuff lying around that you can't remember why, or you're a spouse of a person with star wars stuff whom you want to be separated from, just grab all that star wars stuff and send it to me! email me at [email protected] and I'll tell you where to mail it!

Geek stuff is our favorite prizes! We love Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr. Who, comics, geek movies, geek books, dungeons and dragons, dragons with no dungeons, anything dragons, Big Bang Theory, Bobbleheads, video games, board games, computer games, and nearly anything with an elf, dwarf, giant or spaceship.

So help us out, and get rid of your excess geek stuff. It's for the kids!
