Get Wave 7 or skip it for Ep VII stuff?

By heychadwick, in X-Wing

So, I've been stuck at home due to an ankle surgery for the past 2 months and not able to play X-wing AT ALL. It's been frustrating and driving my family crazy. I am able to get to the game store tonight, though.

I only have $50 for X-wing until early October. That's it. If I buy things at the local store, I have just enough credit to boost things over and get a free $15 store credit.

Do I buy Wave 7 stuff or just get the new Core Set?

When it comes to Wave 7, I have to say I'm really underwhelmed. I mostly play Imperial and S&V. I do love Tie Bombers, though. I really like ordnance. I have no interest in the Tie Punisher in the slightest bit. I have no interest in the K-wing in the slightest bit. I do really want Extra Munitions and the new bombs/missiles/torpedoes. The thing is, though, that unless I want to go to a tournament, I can just proxy that stuff and use all my old models.

I do really like the Kihraxz Fighter and think it fills a great hole in the S&V line up as a cheap, but threatening fighter. I would like a couple of these.

I have no real interest in the Hound's Tooth. I'm just not that into playing the big ships so much. I'm tired of buying all these big ships and just having them sit in my box. I think I've only used my YT-2400 once. I haven't had a game with my Firespray in over a year. The only time I've even used my Falcon was when a friend wanted to fly it. Oh, wait, I did do a Trench Run mission a couple of times with it. I haven't used my Decimator yet.

So far, the only ship I haven't bought is the Phantom, and that's just because I hate it. I think it ruins the game...even with the nerf. It should've been 3 attack die.

The new Core Set seems really cool! I like X-wings and really want to fly them when I play Rebels. The new ones look so cool. I like the new Tie Fighters, too. All those cool new maneuvers and such! Man! They look so neat!!! I have to say that I'm really more interested in the new Core set.

Just even typing this up helps make up my mind. I'm seriously leaning towards the Core Set. So....the real question is to wait until it hits the LGS or buy from Target? If I get it at LGS, I can get that free $15 and buy at least one Kihraxz Fighter.

Anyone want to try to sway me? I'm open to discussion, but I am quite opinionated. Any suggestions or advice?

Come Oct, I will get birthday cash and probably be able to pick up the stuff I missed....but still even wondering about most of the Wave 7 stuff. I just....have no interest in them (except the Kihraxz).

the new bombers are game changing

the ep 7 stuff is more of the same

take your pick depending on how much you like the new bombers

I can just proxy the new bombs and such for now. No tournaments in the foreseeable future. If I really find them game changing, I can buy them later.

I think if you like the TIE Bomber you'll like the Punisher, but if you're genuinely sure you don't want Wave 7, I'd skip it.

As for whether to buy at your FLGS, I think the extra $15 ought to be enough of an incentive. (That is, it would be for me.) I'm going to Target tonight, but (a) I'm chronically impatient, and (b) my budget lets me buy a core set from them now, plus expansions (I hope) from my FLGS later.

Don't get what you won't use.

Proxying Conner Nets and Cluster Mines would probably be difficult unless you can trace a friend's or something.

As a huge Imperial fan and Bomber fan, I'm a bit shocked when people say they have no interest in the Punisher. Redline will absolutely slay large ships and other beefy low-agility fools.

If you also really enjoy Scum...

1) For the love of god, use Emon! He is the most fun Firespray pilot in the game.

2) The Kihraxz certainly would fill that 20-ish point gap in Scum and maybe add some threat or creativity to your fleet.

However...

The new Core provides options for two factions, and if you wait to use the $15 credit for a Core AND a Kihraxz, you've boosted all three of your factions.

But definitely pick up each of the new ships when you can. You may get bored and find something you really like in a ship you would have otherwise never flown.

For now I say Core Set + Kihraxz. But put the Punisher as a close number 2.

Outside of the Hound's Tooth, I am bit more excited for the T-70 and TIE/FO than the other Wave 7 stuff. Get what you want.

To add to redline, he also slays high agility fools

Plasmas are basically hlc shots and 2 attacks outta clusters just tempt fickle dice.

Remove defense tokens (miniswarm block or Carnor) and have yourself a party

Killed whisper + soonts + carnor on Mon with red and 5 ties

Is the Tie Punisher really that interesting? The only thing that seems different are they guy who drops bombs out the front. Besides that, it seems like a less maneuverable (but more durable) Tie Bomber. I've got 4 Tie Bombers and fly them to good effect. I'm not sure what the Tie Punisher brings to me other than something that costs more points than a Tie Bomber.

I have developed tactics to crush fat turrets as it is, so don't really have much of an issue there. I guess I don't fly against enough Soontir Fels to really have to deal with him (shocking, I know, but my store is more fun based). I do see a lot of bro bots, though. Ordnance isn't good vs. them as they tend to roll lucky on green dice.

What am I missing? I'd like to know.

Good points on the templates. Bleh. I know I'll need to get them at some point.

Thinking about it....I'll see about getting the Core Set. Maybe this weekend or maybe in local store. Birthday cash comes in at Oct. Man, adding a teenager to your driving insurance will break your monthly budget. Adding another car will cripple it.

What am I missing? I'd like to know.

Mostly, boost and the system slot.

  • Boost creates a ship that wants to close, and it means in a number of ways you're more maneuverable than a TIE Bomber, despite the slightly less flexible dial.
  • The system slot opens up a lot of fun tricks: Advanced Sensors, Fire Control System, Accuracy Corrector, and Enhanced Scopes all make the Punisher play very differently from the Bomber.

Good points on the templates. Bleh. I know I'll need to get them at some point.

If you do end up skipping Wave 7, the Ghost will have both of the new bomb templates:

If you are on a budget then get the Episode 7 core set as it will have new items which will be required to play X-wing. Wave 7 will have none of that so either get a new core set to stay updated with the changes or be left out all together.

Besides, why would you want to be stuck with a T-65 when you can get a new T-70

too offensive to show

:P

We get it, you're upset.

I find the inclusion of bombs/torps on the ghost to be super weird. It uses neither in any source material

Well, it does now.

It sounds like you have already made your decision, skip wave 7 for now go with the new core set. If you can squeeze in enough money for a kihrazx with the core set, much the better

Not just upset, but upset. Also not great with reading comprehension, since heychadwick was pretty clear that he's interested in casual play.

If I had only 50 bucks... I would rent my body to gain more money and then be able to buy everything!!!!

IOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

^ Opinon only. There is nothing so far to suggest that the new core set is required, either in casual or tournament play. Until it is released and the tournament rules are updated, we have no way of knowing whether the new damage deck is required or optional.

According to someone that owns the new core its only required if you own both decks. Even if they eventually require it for tournaments, Heychadwick isn't planning on playing tournaments.

Anyway, I think you should get what you like, and that sounds like the new core and a Kihraxz will do you right. You can always proxy a Bomber as a Punisher and see if you like it enough to buy one.

Have you ever seen the Falcon shoot a missile? Yet, it's got that slot for it. Which is weird, as I always thought someone would take Assault Missiles to counter the Tie Swarm (which was the Falcon counter). Especially on Han, who can re-roll stuff.

Right. I thought they said play with the new deck if you have the new deck. Until the official tournament packs come out, no biggie. Even then, I'll have to see if I want to go to tournaments still.

OK....so I'll get to fly my "Most Advanced List" of Vader + 3 Tie Adv. tonight and until I can get the new Core Set. We'll see how itchy I get over the holiday weekend to pop over to a Target.

If they changed the damage deck then why would it be made an option? In casual yeah you can play 1st edition much in the same way that no one is stopping you from playing Type 1 MTG, but how many other players can you find playing type 1?

If they made the damage decks an option then people are going to play with the old one since it is less impactful when critical hits arrive. Now will the new damage deck be required immediately after the 4th, probably not. But will the new damage decks be a requirement in the future, I would bet money on it, but since it is impossible for me to collect if I did I won't.

Well, Season two hasn't been shown yet. So far, they've been Rebelling on a budget.

The text of the new rule book states you use the new damage deck if you have it, but play with the older one if you don't.

If they made the damage decks an option then people are going to play with the old one since it is less impactful when critical hits arrive.

I don't think that's an accurate statement. Different lists would favor different damage decks. Something like BBBBZ or 4 AC Tempests will want the old damage deck since there are a lot of crits that won't matter much to them in it. Lists with ships like Soontir, Han, or a ship that depends on its secondary weapon will prefer the new deck because while every crit is likely to do something, most of the really crippling crits have been replaced.

To return to the punisher v bomber, the named pilots are WILDLY different. Whether or not that's enough to merit purchase is up to the wallet bearer

Death rain is easy. NO ONE else does front bombs

Redline is a little more subtle. It's half him and half FCS that turn him into what is currently the most reliable and self sufficient ordnance carrier.

His ability lets him mod more powerful, less accurate ordnance such as plasmas and cms without the aid of jonus (letting him enlist the aid of more efficient ships such as fighters)

FCS let's him maintain or acquure lock on a target without wasting his action (again without external help). This means he can focus for full mods or even red maneuver into a shot even after having spent his lock to turn prior.

Finally, he can use his action to boost into shots.

He is by far the most flexible ordnance carrier in the game (until the pogostick hits, anyway) and a monster made for hunting single, high priority targets of any description
