I painted a destroyed CR90 by Space Rocks. Check it out!

By WWPDSteven, in X-Wing

You mean Mels?

That's 3D cadded and designed though, bit different.

Mels

Gosric

Both under the Shapeways banner

And they're advertised as being for X-Wing and Armada.

Here's the article link for anyone who still wants to see it: http://www.wwpd.net/2015/09/space-rocks-destroyed-blockade-runner.html

The paint job is really great.

I'd be much more inclined to look at the unpainted product if the bases matched any of the standard debris/asteroid templates. (Of course, I'd have to commission the painting, since I'm about as good with a brush as I am at neurosurgery.)

So you're a better painter than me.

I'm doing the math (which admittedly is not my strength - I'm a writer) but it seems to me the Space Rocks guy could still be turning a profit even if he's buying FFG models. He gets about $60 US for a wreck model, and you can find CR90 expansions online for about that, plus he gets to sell sought-after upgrade cards (I've seen 3PO alone for $40 US on eBay). Also, he's selling Falcon wrecks for MORE than the retail price of the expansion, so it's even possible that the CR90 is something of a loss leader or he just breaks even on them while making his money on the upgrade cards. And maybe he really makes his money on asteroids - I paid $31 US for my set of six and there's just not much in the way of materials that goes into them (which is not to say that I'm not VERY happy with them because I am!)

Now, none of this is taking into account the time spent on painting, which makes me think that this is no way for him to get rich. And there's a good chance that's the whole deal for FFG and Disney - this is basically a hobby that homeboy is breaking even on while supporting the community that consumes their products. I have to say that the tone of this discussion makes it sound like people are wanting him to get in trouble for selling products that ENHANCE the use of FFG and Disney products, but in no way replace them.

That's like Ford Motors going after someone that produces after-market air filters that only work for a specific model for Ford car, like K&N, for example. Now, if FFG wanted to get into the terrain business, which would be AWESOME, they might be inclined to shut Space Rocks down.

Just my two cents.

EDIT: Also, whipass paint job by original poster. Impressive. Most impressive.

These aren't the droids you're looking for. Move along. Move along.

Great paint job mate.

I love the 'just blown up' look.

Do Space Rocks pre-paint all their stuff, pre-painted is always a nice selling point.

I really love the debris field falcon they make.

It would.make a nice gift for ficklegreendice as we all now he loves his turrets

Dunno if its the best thing to promote 3rd party stuff on FFGs own site when its clearly made from an FFG original.

I mean its *cool* as an item but its a little bit off the mark promoting other companies stuff on the legit licence holders site.

Though I see your point but it's not like FFG have any problems with people making various bits for the game eg tokens maneuvers templates, dials etc

If someone was making knock off products that were intended to replace the ships themselves then that would be directly hurting FFG and I could see them going after it.

Fair enough for.mentioning it (knowledge is power after all) but ultimately it's up to FFG what can and cannot be posted here

What a KGB logo?

I chose it because i re-enact afghan war soviet units in living history.

Edit: also with a very limited pool of avatars and no option to upload one im the only person on this board i think that uses it... other avatars have multiple users and some convos can get confusing when you are reading quickly and can't tell immediately who is posting.

Well, at least now the thread won't get derailed. ;) Something about my dad telling me about assuming comes to mind here.

That's really neat that you do that. It looks expensive.

Are you a teacher of some sort? Or is it just a hobby?

Its my job.

I write articles on militaria and military history for my own magazine and others. My spare bedroom is an office i can work from home from and its got shelving all round thats either full of wargames miniatures or historical uniforms and weapons from WWI to the 2nd russian war in chechnya (i left the armed forces around 2000 so have little interest in kit past this point).

I've probably got around 50 or 60 uniforms, complete ones at least and about eight of them are soviet, some of them quite rare.

The MTLB gun tow/APC i'm kneeling next to in that pic is one my regiment brought back from Iraq so i asked the guys at the regimental museum if i could do a photo shoot for my magazine with it while wearing soviet era AFV commanders kit as these were used by the russians in Afghanistan when there were no BMPs available or they needed prime movers.

As a hobby Its sort of expensive, depends whether you buy repro or original kit, i tend to buy original kit when possible as it gains value , repro rarely does. All my post war/cold war kit is original, most my UK and US WWII kit is, a small amount of my WWII german kit and I only have a few original WWI items but they are family heirlooms like bayonets and 1903 cavalry bandoliers and the like.

(to give you an idea, post fall of the USSR and the berlin wall you could not *give* east german stuff away and now some of its getting so collectable it is being faked/repro'd. Likewise lots of fake soviet stuff being made to fool collectors. Pre fall of communism it was worth a fortune as surplus couldnt be taken out of the countries, immediately after it was pretty cheap, now some stuff goes for silly money)

soviet afghan kit is getting expensive as its now 30 or more years old and obviously no ones been making it for since 1991! In that pic i'm probably wearing about UK GBP £400 - £500 worth of clothes and the AKSU is about another £300s worth. Expensive stuff is things like the body armour and the 'afghanka' m88 uniforms in my size (i'm 6.2" and soviet conscripts were not the most well built of guys :) )

But.. because its my job i can write a lot of it off against tax returns.

Excellent paint job. How about a commissioned paint job if I order one?

Plus, check this new item out - http://www.space-rocks.net/#!escort-frigate/cioi.That thing is awesome but I wonder about the intellectual property rights. Yes, it's the own design (not from a FFG mold) but the design is still owned by LFL / Disney. I might still pick one up. Is Space Rocks trust worthy?
