I painted a destroyed CR90 by Space Rocks. Check it out!

By WWPDSteven, in X-Wing

edit- I've removed any potentially offending content.

edit 2- if you want to see the article, you can still find it on my website: http://www.wwpd.net/2015/09/space-rocks-destroyed-blockade-runner.html

These aren't the droids you're looking for. Move along. Move along.

Dunno if its the best thing to promote 3rd party stuff on FFGs own site when its clearly made from an FFG original.

I mean its *cool* as an item but its a little bit off the mark promoting other companies stuff on the legit licence holders site.

You know- I can dig that. I'd delete the thread if I could- mods, feel free. Fire when ready :)

GREAT paint job Steven! Gratz!

Well done. I've seen them on Ebay but your painting is awesome.

Can you paint one for me? :D

hehehe I could be talked into it :)

Well there are 3rd party acrylic templates on this forum as well so I don't see that much. I guess the question is with what FFG product this 3rd party product is competing with. You can't use this as a CR-90 nor is it legal for any other asteroids or obstacle tokens.

You have to purchase the FFG model - they aren't losing any money on this at all. They may even be selling an extra ship where they normally wouldn't. This isn't third party product imo - it's a mod of an FFG product - what's wrong with that?

Whats wrong is that you're taking the master sculpt that someone has the licence for and paid royalties on, something that a company OWN the intellectual property for and using their hard work to make recasts for scenery purposes.

Like i say its cool enough but its a bit like going on say GWs forums and selling your own resin cast 'wrecked land raiders' made my taking a mould of a GW landraider you've mashed up.

Its essentially IP theft and illegal.

But hang on Gadge, isn't that like people selling kitbashes/custom models/propaints? You see them on ebay all the time.

There's a big difference between 'legal' and 'welcome on an official forum'! Personally I'd say this is perfectly legal, but also that this topic will probably live a brief, but beautiful, life!

Not trying to rock any boats! Happy to watch this topic get pulled into the hangar of the Star Destroyer, boarded by Vader, and subsequently destroyed!

No. Those people bought that ship, painted and resold it. Space rocks bought ONE, made a mold, copied their ship a bunch of times and sold those.

See the difference?

Personally, I'm not horribly worried about it.I got a transport from SR a while back, and it makes a great obstacle. It's not like it's a usable ship or anything; it's just scenery. And it's not my ass getting sued...

Yeah I see your point, that is technically IP theft, as it's clearly a star wars corvette. just busted up.

I dont want to sound like a grouch, trust me I'd like one myself and considered chopping up the tantive that my mates dog chewed up to make one, i just think its probably not wise to advertise them on here if we'd like to *continue* to be able to buy third party items.

Its is a *little* cheeky being a direct pull/cast of the FFG model but i can see the intent is to provide cool scenery, i'm just not sure here is the place to display it.

This doesn't take the place of the corvette in game play. They aren't producing this as something to be used instead of a FFG product at a discounted price. This also might fall under the laws that protect reverse and or re-engineering.

I removed the link and picture, hopefully a mod can sink this boat!

Apologies again y'all!

You say this, and I want to take you seriously, but then I look at your avatar and wonder.

IANAL, but I'm married to one (appeal to authority, woo). I am pretty certain that this wouldn't fall under any of the standard exemptions to copyright. They're not strictly defined (they give the judge a fair bit of leeway to "know it when they see it"), but generally it's stuff like academic use; comentary, satire, or parody; transformative derivative works; etc. That last one's pretty loose, but I'd be shocked if taking a cast of a commercial product to use as the base of your own commercial product that remains instantly recognizable as the original qualifies.

This is based off of the assumption that it's a cast, of course. If they were instead selling the service of buying a CR90 for you, and then chopping it up and painting it, I think that'd be A-OK.

What a KGB logo?

I chose it because i re-enact afghan war soviet units in living history.

Edit: also with a very limited pool of avatars and no option to upload one im the only person on this board i think that uses it... other avatars have multiple users and some convos can get confusing when you are reading quickly and can't tell immediately who is posting.

I didn't see this as being a cast - I understood it to be an actual FFG model that was modded - which is no different than any of the other services offered to paint or mod legitimate molds. If that is the case, it is much less questionable than even posting links to Shapeways models of non-FFG models but still Star Wars IP (looking at you massive Nebulon B - awesome though it is)

Considering they sell dozens of identical ones on ebay i'd be amazed if its not a cast.

If they are custom made each time then they lose about £40 in the UK everytime they make one!

If it is a cast then I would tend to agree with your opinion!

Isn't there a forum member who promotes his own website where Star Wars models are created and sold for X-Wing and Armada?

WWPDSteven was only saying "look at what I've painted". Promoting his painting not the company. Admittedly, it should be on "off topic" though.

Sorry to page 2 comments if any of you have already said this. I got tired of reading the legalities when I know someone promotes his company and gets away with it.

@WWPDSteven

I'm disappointed not to see your painting. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to show off your hard work.
