In case there was any doubt still about Target

By GiraffeandZebra, in X-Wing

I emailed the store I typically buy from and they said, "As of right now, there is a new starter getting released, but we will not be carrying it." Maybe they can't admit that they will, but that seems like a weird thing to embargo. They could have said that they will in the future, but the response is simply that they will not be so I wouldn't hold out too much hope for local stores having this soon. :-\

It's possible local stores will get the expansions and big box stores get the core sets maybe.

Can we go back to talking about how sleezy and dirty it is releasing a new miniatures product to department stores that don't sell miniatures products, but not releasing them to our own FLGS?

Why would we when it's none of those things?

Target doesn't run FNM either, but I don't think it's wrong they sell Magic.

But you're missing the point. In terms of MTG, this kind of release would be akin to releasing the new Magic Core block at Target first, and then waiting a few weeks before releasing it to the local shops that run FNMs. Can you imagine the backlash that would cause?

None? There are already Big box exclusive products each with their own line of exclusive promos. Look at the three packs with the foil on the front.

Can someone please post a screenshot? We have no Traget shops over here so no zip code etc. Thanks!

FFG has deleted every post with pictures of the unannounced core set so no. Check Reddit, Imgur or YouTube. All three have stuff.

Can you order now, pay Now, and pick up at midnight? Or do you have to wait until midnight to order?

If you attempted to order before 9/4/15, they would just cancel your order and you would get en e-mail or txt saying they don't have it.

And it is not unheard for them to declare certain "hot" items to be first come first serve to in-store customers only. I have learned in 20 years of retail that the customer in front of you who actually made the effort to come into the store always takes precedent over phone or online customers.

Walmart and Target often compete for exclusivity deals to try to draw sales from the other. It could even be a deal with Disney that FFG was reluctantly bound to. I hope this is not the case but it seems more and more likely. Target knows that people want this stuff and once in they are in building they buy other things. They simply are paying Disney more to carry the product in the hope of making it back on other sales.

And isn't kind of ridiculous that we've had unboxing videos of the toys going on for almost 24 hours now and FFG still can't even acknowledge this thing exists?

Well, they haven't deleted this thread yet. That's KINDA acknowledging it exists.

Right, which makes sense but I'm going to go in there and get this and only this. If they don't have it, I'll be leaving without giving them any of my money. Microsoft and Sony go back and forth with gaming publishers on exclusivity agreements like this as well.

When you say "store" are you referring to your local game shop? I think that's what you mean but am not certain. If that's the case your LGS has been in the same situation that every other LGS has reportedly been in: they simply haven't been given an opportunity to order product uet. I'm still holding out hope that will change in the coming days but it's very possible that FFG has only been able to produce the core sets that are fulfilling what went into Target stores for the initial release.

Yes, though it's not local to me, it's a local game shop. That's all they sell, but they sell over the internet so I order it.

There is no possible way that this is a Target exclusive. For one the packaging would reflect that. This will be in game shops eventually. But with so much product earmarked for a Target release they may not have had the ability to produce enough to get it everywhere just yet. Remember, Wave 7 just hits store shelves a week ago. Wave 8 is in production. The new core sets are sitting in Target stores waiting to go on shelves tonight. They also need to produce additional core sets for game shops plus all of the Episode 7 expansions. It's unrealistic to believe that they could have everything for Episode 7 ready for tonight and available for game shops all while keeping a lid on things.

If it's a Target exclusive, then I expect at least one of the target lock tokens to have the Target logo on them instead of a letter.

Doing some back-of-the-envelope math, a 20-foot container would be able to fit more than 11,000 core sets. It would be bad economics to ship a half-full container from China to the US, and, as they said at Gen-Con, the product was "on the water". I would guess, therefore, that there are at least 5,000 core sets and 10,000 expansions shipped already. If Target is getting 2,000+, I would expect that the container was actually a 40-foot or 50-foot container, and they have many thousand waiting to ship to local gaming stores within the next few weeks.

Over 9000?

Or, it was in a container with a bunch of Wave 7 stuff or other FFG products, and all these numbers are meaningless.

And if you multiply the 1799 target stores by a cautious average of 6 units per store you get dang close to 11000 units...

Over 9000?

What?!? 9000?!?!

So wait, the same store that ended up selling off its stock of the original core set at a 60% discount is now going to agree to be the exclusive retailer for the new version of that same core set? Okay.

My understanding (I'm not an importer) is that shipping companies are happy to give you a fraction of a container, especially half. They fill the other half with someone else's order.

I know you're not saying this, but just to be perfectly clear: I'm absolutely certain the core set isn't exclusive to Target. Doing that would have few advantages for FFG and would cause a lot of problems.

I suspect Target gets first crack because they're a big chain that Disney can trust to keep the lid on (mostly...) and because the original core set sold well enough for Target to agree to stock it.

I'm sure both Disney and FFG would be happy to have other big-box stores stock X-wing. I'm equally sure FFG is planning on putting Episode VII stuff into their regular supply chain (that is, the chain that leads to your FLGS) as soon as they can legally do so, with as much stock as they can feasibly manufacture. There's just no logical argument for suddenly and without warning changing the way they distribute X-wing, especially not at the cost of losing their entire non-US audience.

So here's my question.

Which is more likely?

a. all big-box retailers (walmart, target, toys r us and disney stores) will receive the same force friday products which has been decided by Disney. The leaks from Target were only the result of poor storage policies and/or incompetent employees.

or

b. different retailers will receive different products which could result in one chain having something the others don't and possibly not even caring or knowing that it was 'exclusive' to them.

I'm hoping for a (though we know that at least some products are exclusives).

I think this is correct, but I bet Target & Disney hooked up on this big time, and it's likely Core Set 2 won't be in LGSs until somewhat later. In other words, while the set isn't Target exclusive, I'm sure it's just Target for this print run.

It's possible local stores will get the expansions and big box stores get the core sets maybe.

I haven't seen much to indicate that there will be any expansions. Now don't get me wrong, i'd love to see some and be able to play a whole 100 pt game with a few different ships from the First Order and Resistance...but we may not see the SF tie or expansions/new ships for a couple months.

I wanna do some time traveling and have the Ghost and a coulple of T-70 X-Wings. May not be the most effective, but it'll look d@mn cool. :D
