Watching EPIV ANH for about the two millionthe time....

By Gadge, in X-Wing Off-Topic

And its still brilliant.

Honestly its one of the few films I never get tired of seeing,

ESB is my favourite but i think i'm getting *slightly* close to overwatching that one :)

To put it in context though i think i've seen EP1 3 times, ep2 twice and EP3 once....

Lucas tricked me into seeing ep1 twice with that 3D version that had (almost) no 3D in it.

Fave one is ROTJ.

I dunno, i think ROTJ is a bit too cutesy and had none of the epicness of ANH or the darkness of ESB

ROTJ is probably my least favourite of the OT. Starts off quite well but there is too much 'daft jabba creatures' (dont get me started on the rework with the song routine) and I struggled to see the empire taken down by ewoks when i was 8, let alone 40.

ESB just has so much menace in it. The force is potentially dangerous to luke, Han is kidnapped and could die, Luke is maimed, the Empire is truly monolithic you know?

Seems with all trilogies the third one is the weakest, with the exception of Indiana Jones where the 2nd one is toss and the third one is possibly the best (i prefer to pretend the 4th one never happened :) )

edit: RE CGI, watching ANH at the moment its the actual LACK of CGI than seems to make it feel more real and fresh than any of the recent CGI laden fodder. Consideing it was totally made on the cheap everything looks like its real in it.

CGI is a tool - nothing more, nothing less. Also, do keep in mind that "The Empire" wasn't taken down by Ewoks. A FORCE of Imperials was taken down - and those Ewoks had a LOT of help from the Rebels. They wouldn't have been able to mount that kind of attack without the Rebels helping organize it.

Other than ewoks Jedi has the best space combat, an awesome lightsaber duel and jabbas palace.

Yeah ewoks suck but they don't ruin the film for me.

My dad found unadulterated VHS copies of ANH and ESB the other day. We haven't had a chance to watch them yet, but hoping they're still in good condition.

RotJ has always been my favorite, Ewoks be damned.

The Star Wars trilogy, pre-Lucas tinkerage? You sir have just found the Holy Grail.

So much this

To me, ROTJ was my favorite Star Wars film. I think it's because I was 3 when it came out, and probably 4 or 5 when it was out on VHS, playing in my, or a friend's home. I saw at the prime age for Ewoks. Jabba's palace was thrilling to me! B-Wings, Nien Numb, Luke vs Vader in the Emperor's Throne Room! All of that was cemented in my mind at a very impressionable age.

Now granted ESB is probably surperior to it in every way, but it doesn't tug at my heart strings in the same way.

Yeah i get that to a degree as i got into SW late. I saw ANH on TV one christmas , i was into the toys at a point where ESB was on video (VHS) and we'd all play with ATATs and speeders every time it snowed but I think i was about 8 when ROTJ came out and had tons of star wars stuff and was excited about seeing it in the cinema, at the time i think i thought it was the best and i did love ewoks as a kid, (even had the ewok movies on video and an ewok village) but even then i thought they should have got maimed by an imperial battalion with armoured support :)

I remember though with ESB being told by a mate at school who had seen it that Vader was lukes father and not being able to believe it and being properly shocked when i saw it, I also loved the ATATs, everything about Bespin and I think ESB was when i first truly started to love star wars.

I totally didnt get the pathos and menace at the time but as an adult i think its the strongest interpretation of the SW galaxy and the politico/military situation of the GCW they have shown to date.

You really get the idea the rebels are running scared and doing hit and run raids, nowhere is safe, no one can be trusted etc etc

Well at least one Ewok died during the ground battle of Endor. I remember it was sad.

Look up Harmy's Despecialized Edition. You can't beat it. At least until we get the OT on blueray.

I'm 50/50 on the Ewoks. The Imperials wouldn't have expected such a primative attack. I liked the AT-ST log crush and the other tripping on the rolling logs. But so much of the rest just sucked. I mean a Stormtrooper gets taken down by like 3 Ewoks attacking him. C'mon, the little things waddle when the walk.

But them Family Guy makes it all okay.

Still got my VHS copies, I'm surprised they weren't ruined by how many times I watched them.

Why is it so hard for Lucasfilm to make a Blurays of the original theatrical releases? And if you are going to add anything please let it be Tosche Station/Anchorhead Biggs scenes, NOT Jabba slumming it in Amos Eisley.

I got them on DVD when they come out as double dvd packs the remake and the original on a seperate disk.

Jedi has the final end of palpatine (EU be damend ;) ) the redemption of anakin skywalker and -ah F*** it! It was the first one I saw as a kid, ok?(wich is a major factor I'll admit.) and it has Jabba and all these weird aliens (Bib Fortuna, squid head, gamorean guards) and boba Fett and the friggin RANCOR! Also it has an awesome simultanious lighstaber duel/ground battle/space battle (it is called Star wars for a reason ;) ) also B-wings! And when you get older and you watch it again you notice things like hellloooo gold bikini slave Leia! :D

Also Ewoks rule!

Mola Ram! Mola Ram! Mola Ram!

Thats what I liked about Temple of Doom: It's the only one not mired down in nazi's and christian holy artifacts.

Even Short Round gets that cool "No time for love, doctor Jones." one liner!

If only that bloody woman would stop screaming for 5 seconds! :)

YES! Same for me!

I remember the first time I saw hope I was like five and around my uncle Brian's it was nearly Xmas and it was on the telly, he recorded it on his vhs for me and let me take it home with me.

I wore that tape out but that memory sticks with me clear as day.

I can't take the special editions so i only watch my old VHS. Its the Digitaly Remaster letter box version that came out after the laserdisc and before the special editions (and better than either) so its kind of rare and I dont want to wear it out by watching it too much. Someday I need to transfer it to my computer.

Star Wars Revisited basically instantaneously became by default and favorite version of ANH. (alright, not instantaneous, it took about 2 hours)

RotJ has a lot of great stuff: the speeder bikes (and scout troopers, with the best uniform), the space battle, the denizens of Jabba's palace (EV-9D9! The crying animal trainer, Klaatu! Barada! Nikto! The doordroid Na chuta? (my wife and I say that a lot)). Enough to offset the Ewoks and then some.

ANH has the Corvette and Han shooting first and more. It has Obi-Wan pondering before answering what happened to Anakin, deciding what to tell him. Which is important and noticeable because at that point Vader had not been made into Anakin, that came between ANH and ESB.

That's a hesitation that become more than intended when rewatching.

ESB is best though, it has everything that you could possibly want. Wampa's, AT-AT's, bacta, Lando. Nebulon B frigates. Love it.

That's why you need to buy the theatrical edition if you don't own them yet.

ANH WORKS JUST GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy, happy, happy!

You guys should check out the despecialized edition of the OT. They're really amazing.

The first time I loaded up 2.5 and everything was back in order...

It was like seeing an old friend. I can't even express how fortunate I feel to have 720P quality of the original theatrical versions. Here's to Harmy.
