Squadrons in Epic Game

By Hexdot, in X-Wing

When designing Epic Escenarios quite often I group 4-6 same type ships in a Squadron. They must deploy within range 2 of each other, and share a "title" or "modificatio" beyond normal restrictions

Examples :

- X WING TORNADO SQUADRON : Modified giro sistems enables them to execute athe BARREL ROLL action, but causes Stress

- Y WING COLOSSUS SQUADRON : Anti Huge Ship training enables them to Target Lock Huge targets at range 1-4

- TIE INTERCEPTOR GLADIUS FORCE : When they equip a Elite Upgrade that must be discarded after use, they can be used twice.

It is a lot of fun, they can move freely.but when deployed they are agrouped and there are endless posibilities to Custom them.

Pimp my ship !!!

It was used in warhammer games already for apocalypse/eot variant. You had few squads there that acted as "single" unit with some additional abilities.

It was pretty nice back there, i would love to see such concept, in xwing.

I'd like to see squadron rules added to Epic play. Perhaps Fighters could be tied up by interceptors somehow.

They're not really Rebel or Imperial squadron designations though.

Rebel squadrons are (mostly) colours (Rogue is a notable exception) and Imperial squadrons are (mostly) greek letters (Black is a notable exception).

Rebels seem to have a few extras. Knave or some synonym to Rogue. K's are now Warden and Sentinel so Guardian etc. would be thematic.

Imps are all Greek or synonyms for black. Be careful you don't go accidentally racist though...

It is kind of funny because really the only thing that separates epic from a well 200+ standard game is huge ships. A larger play area and more small/large ships you could do as just a casual standard w/modified rules. But yeah it is kind of funny there are no real formations in Epic other than 4 IG-88s with title.

Still the questions is where would formation fits other than to bring more than 8-12 small ships which to be hones not many players have that massive of a collection especially at $15 a model. Part of the reason why X-wing is so affordable is the model count in a standard game is so low, 2-8 per player (compared to 40k which is 12-100+ per game). So not many people have more than two of a single ship with the exception of the swarm ships of the TIE fighters and Z-95 headhunters.

THough it would be nice to have some special rules like bringing a Vader's death star squadron to the table.

I was PMing with Ken at Sunrise about this not that long ago.

The most fun I've had is when one person (or maybe two working together) build both lists for an Epic game. Create a balanced list for each side that is fun and will be able to play off each other. To me, it's much more interesting and shows more of your actual pilot skill when you remove list building and "chessy" combos.

When I do make these games, I tend to group different types of ships into little squadrons. I tend to go with 3 since I usually use all my own models and I don't have more than 3 for some of them. That, and it is a nice balance to be effective, yet stay affordable. I do 4 for things like Tie Fighters or super cheap filler and 2 ships for larger ones like E-wings or Tie Defenders.

I think it adds an extra strategic element to the game as you try to protect your Bombers as they get into position to blast the enemy, yet you need to defend your capital ships with your Interceptors when they send their Bombers at you.
