New Continuity in your game?

By fjw70, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Just curious with Force Friday a little over a day away if anyone is landing to start new campaign set in the new post ROTJ era or if their campaigns are at a point where it can move into that era soon.

I am thinking about starting a new game set just after ROTJ using the NC material coming out this week.

I am assuming that the new books and comics coming out Friday will have enough setting info to do this.

In our campaign, we are set just a few years after the Emperor gets thrown down the shaft. What we know so far of Episode VII and the embargoed material that will be released soon, that is set much further in the future.

So, what we’re trying to do is examine what might happen (or have happened) in that time, as Luke grew older.

In the EU, Luke held off for a long time from training anyone, because he feared that they would follow the same path as his father. He doesn’t start trying to put together the New Jedi Order for quite some time.

In our Universe, pretty much right after RotJ, Luke starts work on trying to help create a New Jedi Order, and he has help not only from other Jedi (and former Jedi) that might have survived the purge, but he also has help from some of the other Force-using organizations — e.g., the Jal Shey, among others.

In fact, our small group just last week passed the new version of their own Jedi trials, and our next adventure (this week) is going to see them going out as a team of Jedi Knights who are trying to help right wrongs, fight the good fight, etc….

While I'm interested in the new movies and materials for their own sake, I'm not really all that interested in them for gaming. The Rebellion era is fairly low on my scoring of what I like in Star Wars, and the TFA isn't likely to eclipse my desire to game in The Old Republic or Legacy timelines (which shows I don't give two ***** for the distinction of what's canon and what's legends).

I really doubt there will be enough info in the near future for my group to want to do anything post ROTJ unless set in the very early Aftermath period. If there is a TFA sourcebook though we might try something.,

Edit I mean post ROTJ in the new continuity. We'll probably do stuff post ROTJ 2 to 10 years after Endor but in the Legends continuity or a continuation one of the timelines where our party's actions or those of a previous party cause some significant change to events. At least for our FFG campaigns. Our next Saga campaign is going to be a post Legacy/Second Imperial Civil War campaign covering the buildup to and early phases of a fourth GCW (We count the second Imperial civil War as being part of and occurring parallel to GCW III). And for our next D6 campaign we're going to try a timeline where the Rebels won at Endor and the events of Truce at Bakura take place but as the last phases of the fighting at Bakura are occuring an Imperial fleet launches a counter attack at Endor. This devastates the Alliance fleet leaving them able to hold the few worlds that have rebelled until they rebuild their strength. Meanwhile the Empire starts fragmenting as the early warlords arise. The Alliance in desperation, and having more money then its war machine can fully utilize due to a few rich worlds that were oppressed under the Empire revolting and joining the rebellion and some corporations trying to build bridges under the table, hire a number of privateers, plus survivors of pirate bands, and criminal organizations to form a small fleet dedicated to harassing the various Imperialist factions and keeping them as weak as possible while the Alliance rebuilds with our party as part of that fleet. We might use the EOE material in one or more future FFG campaigns in that timeline as well.

My plan is to start playing in the EotE era (ie. between Ep. IV and Ep. V) and play through until the end of the empires domination (Ep VI).
After that, I'll surprise the players by saying that the campaign is over and we'll start playing a new one soon, in the new era (Ep. VII), but without their knowledge, they're gonna be playing their old characters, only 30 years older :D

I think it might be fun hehe

Interesting idea OddballE8 but having been in some campaign series that had time jumps I see two potential major problems with it.

1: What if some of your players don't want to play their old characters?

2: Unless they've been frozen in carbonite for 30 years they will have earned massive about of xp. I've never been in a party that did a multi-decade in FFG or WEG Star Wars but I was part of one that did a 25 year time jump in Saga and we had to houserule rules for level 21+ characters and spending xp to buy Talents, Feats, and ability points directly rather then gaining them from levels as a result of all the xp we gained (Most of our PCs were late level 16 or early 17 pre-jump) Even a one or two year jump's worth of points in WEG or FFG Star Wars can be a big boost in my experience.

I'm not trying to drag your idea down honestly ust curious about if you have considered these issues and if so how you plan to deal with them.

I like that idea, Oddball.

Myself, I've been using the new canon from the start. We began just a few months prior to the Battle of Yavin and have now moved on to a few months after. What it means so far is the world is wide open, except for what's been covered in the movies. I don't intend for this campaign to go beyond Episode VI, but I'm also leaving the option open in case people want to do it.

I'm more excited for Force Friday for my own edification.

1: Knowing my group, that won't be a problem. And even if it was, they'll get to serve up a glorious death for their old character before they create a new one :)

2: Sure, but then you have to consider the factors that they're A: Very much older (and just old in general) and thus have lost a bit and B: there will invetably be periods of time where they're not "adventuring".

In general, I think RPG's do it a bit wrong when they only add things to the player over time and never deduct anything. After all, I am a trained metalworker, but I haven't done any of that in years and probably couldn't weld a decent line if my life depended on it.

I'll be handling the xp and long time bit by giving them a small lump sum of xp, but also having a chance of them getting a major injury during their "time away". Of course, that injury will have been compensated somehow; anything from a simple eyepatch for a damaged eye to an advanced cybernetic arm for a lost arm.

And they'll also have randomly generated luck or misfortune when it comes to credits. (although they'll never be "rich")

Anyway, it's just for fun and in the end, they will either be retiring or dying, and the players will get new characters.
