Does anyone actually LIKE the Punisher?

By Darth Ruin, in X-Wing

Okay the TIE Punisher, at 21 points it is the same cost as the shuttle and the TIE Advanced. However it has 1 more hull and 2 less shields from the shuttle as well as 1 less firepower. It is in that funny spot at 21 points between shuttle and advanced.

So as the Shuttle well it can be a durability tank with 10 hit points, it has considerable firepower at 3 with a cannon also with sensor and crew slots it can bring some considerable firepower to the table. Disadvantages would be a restrictive dial requiring the EU upgrade. The large base makes it easier to target but also with EU gives it more maneuverability.

As for the TIE advanced it gets a sensor upgrade for free and has the barrel roll ability so giving it EU makes it practically a more durable arc dodger unlike the glass cannons of the TIE Interceptors. More of an agility tank.

As for the TIE Punisher it cost more than an advance, while it has the boost action so it save a point on EU but doesn't save anything on sensor upgrades. It has 1 agility so which makes it easy to focus down, autothrusters can make for a better chance that it could evade 1 of the shots. IT lacks the firepower of a shuttle and its boost will be behind the shuttles range of maneuvers. No cannon upgrade means for firepower it will have to supplement its 2 firepower with sub-optimal torpedo and missile weapons and bombs to hope and get a leg up on damage efficiency.

I'm not a fan of the "add moar bitz!" approach to Imperial starfighter design, of which the Punisher (and the TIE Oppressor, I guess) are the acme.

But I think FFG's modelers did a really good job. I think the mini looks good on the table, and I'm happy to run it next to my other ships.

Ditto Vorps. I think it is fine and fun.

The next time FFG pulls this I want; Kraytgunship.jpg or Kimogila.jpg because just ****... that glory .

Do it FFG!

:D

I don't see the hate personally. It looks great. Sure, it's a bit chunky, but it has to be with the load it's carrying.

That's the thing though. Even though it has 4x the ordinance pods of a TIE Bomber, it only carries 20% more ordinance...

Also, why they hell does it have Boost? It's a slow-ass bomber!

It also has ten engines. It's not a slow-ass bomber, it just can't turn.

It also has ten engines.

...I don't think it does. It's still a Twin Ion Engine ship.

Not every hole in the back of a ship is an engine.

From Cutlass Squadron Pilot

"The TIE punisher built upon the success of the TIE bomber, adding shielding, a second bomb chute, and three additional ordance pods, each equipped with a twin ion engine."

Hmm. Alright then.

Someone should update the wookieepedia.

Does that mean the TIE Bomber actually has two Twin Ion Engines?

Given that most models seem to have a pair of red dots on each pod, yeah, probably.

Possibly worth noting that the TIE Advanced also has 2 pairs of engines, you can see 4 red glows in a new hope as it launches from the DS.

I love the Punisher. I don't EVER want to fly a regular bomber again unless it's like a regular swarm.

Why? I think honestly the shields and additional bomb capacity really does it for me. I like the punisher as a bomber far more than anything else.

I didn't care for either the punisher or k-wing miniature, but I liked the abilities of the punisher so I bought one. I'm getting used to it a bit.

I skipped the k-wing. I don't have any desire to use bombs as a rebel, and I just don't need another turreted ship. If I liked the mini I might still buy it, but it's too ugly for me.

I suppose I might still buy it to get the conner net though. Not sure how to proxy that connor net token.

This comparison is nearly the very definition of obtuse for proving...actually nothing.

The punisher is what brought me back into this game after a long break. I think it looks great.

Deathrain is the most fun I've had flying since they released Turr! Love the punisher... Or...

cant go back to playing mere bombers and Ys after these guys and Ks, that's for sure :)

not as efficient, but the silliness and awesome factor makes their predecessors unplayable :P

I love both aesthetic and gameplay aspects.

I have nothing but love for the fat bottomed TIEs.

The Punisher is bad ass! I approve!

I can't stand the TIE Let's-glue-more-bits-together (not necessarily because of that approach to design - you could do it a certainw ay and I might love it, I just hate that one) or the K-Wing, and I think the Kzxkqw looks boring, but I like Hounds Tooth.

This is the first wave I haven't pre-ordered or bought on day one though. The models coming out for Armada and Imperial Assault are a lot more exciting (though X-Wing's probably still my favoured game).

Just make prequel ships already, jeez.

As someone mentioned in the "K-Wing is large!" thread, 'TIE Lets glue more bits together' acually makes sense. I will agree it is not creative, but it is logical that a design that utilizes old parts for which you already have the production facilities is preferable to an entirely new one.

As I said, I love the Punisher for its blunt brutality, it resonates really well with me. I can understand what there is not to like about it, though, it just doesn't bother me. This was the first wave where I was on the release day at the LGS throwing money into their pocket. (doesn't say much as I started playing after wave 4, but my hype was real anyways)

My affection for the Tie Bomber is strong enough to resist the new girl on the block.

Just...

For me the Tie Bomber is still better value, Extra Munitions and the MkII upgrade make it even better.

On the other hand the K-wing has really got me excited, especially for a ship I originally thought was an example of EU crap.

I wasn't sold on the punisher until i unpacked one.

it does seem oversized but in game terms and aesthetically i think its fine.

Looks better in a flight of two. On its own it looks like its in the wrong scale.

I agree, it's very logical, particularly in a space setting where aerodynamics don't matter. I just don't like it.

I like glueing Interceptor wings onto Star Destroyers though. Huh.

I like it, looks wise. I'm struggling to come up with good builds for it, but I feel that wasn't the thrust of the thread. :P

What I don't like about the Punisher is that the design looks too derivative and the idea too redundant. The TIE Bomber was enough to fill the role. Supplements like this are more intended to make people buy cards because they feel the need to 'keep up'.

They make the bombin' world go 'round.

I can see how you could come to that conclusion, until you get them on the table. They feel remarkably distinct from the TIE Bomber, given they're both ordnance-focused ships.

I bought two and intend to fly both this Saturday. :)
