So it looks like FFG is trying to use episode 7 to bring in new player to X-Wing. I've been trying to get X-Wing going at my FLGS with very little success. Any ideas on how to use the current marketing hype to revitalize the local community?
Using the new core to build the community
"Hey you liked the new star wars movie right?"
"..yeah"
"Why don't you come play this game with me, you can chose to be X-wing dude or if you prefer you can fly some of those sweet TIE fighters"
"...ok, who are you by the way? Are you asking this of all the people who are leaving the cinema?"
Depends if Target still markets X-wing miniatures as they always do as children toys. The fact that board game and table top game stores are sort of left out of this makes it kind of hard to get more X-wing players especially when they are placed with 3-12 year old products.
Step one. Find people who enjoy wargaming.
Step two. Invite them to play a game with you.
Step three. Show them how cheap this game is to get into and stay into.
Step four. Point out that every model in this game can be competitive.
Step five. Welcome your new players
step zero: find people who don't know anything about wargaming, or card gaming or gaming in general. Including Chinese grandmas.
There's a new core?

I'm really curious as to who makes up the clientel of a FLGS that doesn't have a X-Wing player base.....
People who shop at gaming stores that have too few tables, too small tables, or no tables at all.
Edited by AyleronMagic players, it honestly is mosmost LGS bread and butter.
Recruiting Magic players shouldn't be too hard. The two groups (Magic and X Wing) speak some of the same language...meta game, builds, initiative, synergy, cost efficiency and strategy. The issue to circumvent is how to spend money on both addictive pastimes.
Edited by CPT MulgrewI play in Buffalo, NY and a friend and I started at our LGS. At the time there were some other stores that had players, so we talked to the owner of our LGS and set up a weekly demo/gaming night. From there we built our base of players. We have anywhere from 2-8 players every week. The key to keeping it going is consistency. Of the stores that were playing Xwing when we started last August, only our LGS still has a dedicted night to Xwing gaming. We also do monthly tourney's and travel to play in surrounding areas to keep up with the community. We also have a dedicated facbook page that keeps everyone in the loop. Posting on here in organized events also has been a big help to spread the word. As for the new episode 7 core set, I feel that maybe it will get some people who don't go to game shops into the game. Good luck buildiing your player base and fly casual out there.

Well, that and how to get Magic players to start being hygenic...

We have not had good luck getting Magic players to stay with X-wing. Most of them want to power game, and completely destroy the other player. That doesn't work out to well for them. They get tired of losing half their games and quit after a few months.
Oddly enough, and as hard as it can be for this community to grasp it, there's still a ton of people who have never watched any of the existing 6 films. It was the same as Star Trek, with the reboot. It brought a ton of new people to the fold who just didn't like Shatner et al. I'm certain that E7 will do the same here.
Ask if you can play a demo game. Spread the word yourself. Put up a sign-up sheet in the store and see who wants to check it out.
Target has a decent strategy game selection now. But it's mainly the most popular games. I doubt it'll be in the children's section.

As far as I can tell they have nights for Magic, Heroclix, and Warmahordes. We have run 2 X-Wing tournament kits. 7 people came to the first one and 8 to the second. The few times a regular X-Wing night has been suggested I've been the only one to show up.
I saw a thread earlier where someone suggested a core only tournament. I was thinking of trying something like that, but allowing either core to be used. The prize pool would consist of an episode 7 expansion and left over Soontir Fels or something like that.

So you did see an improvement in your tournaments, then? /s
What do the tables at the shop look like?
And what day are you suggesting for a league night?
We do ours on Friday at my local shop but that only works because we have a pretty big store and can actually say, "these tables are for x-wing, not for FNM." I realize that's not as easy at most stores to pull off but it does seem like the most likely night for players to show because of length of games, and because lots of players still do other stuff during other parts of the weekend, like drink.

Keep plugging away at it. My experiences with building up a game are that it takes time, but if you keep up a steady pressure, eventually people will give it a try.
I once spent 6 months asking people if they wanted to give a game a try, eventually we had about a dozen people buying armies and playing regularly. Of course, then GW decided to drop all support for the game, but that is a different issue.
Core set is a pretty easy sell, having a star wars night at your FLGS and consistently doing things that night will help more. Maybe hand out some x-wing business cards for that shop with a number and the night? Also, have fun formats available: 20/30 point furball, 50 point fleets, etc. Stuff that you can do with a core + 1 expansion is best!

Wow. A post without a clip of Jek blowing up! Well done

Im in Salem OR, and this is also how we built our player base, When i first started doing the game night demos, i would be lucky if i had 2 players. Now i have an average of 6-8 ppl every monday. It takes time. Also be creative. Use escalation league, game night kits for prizes. I also came up with a galactic campaign play format using custom printed planets with in game bonuses and that has been a huge success. Once we have it play tested a bit more i will share it. But yeah, just hang in there.

You're just doing a bit now right? Just trolling to troll, right?

I don't know about your Target, but mine has a progressively adult board game section. I was quite shocked to see Settlers and Pandemic being sold. Granted those are still slightly lower age groups than X-wing, but it is a HUGE step up from Monopoly and Risk.

The guys I play XWing with are actually Historical Wargamers for the most part that like Star Wars!
