How many of those large Plano boxes that hold 4 tackleboxes within would it take to store a 'complete' collection?

By ParaGoomba Slayer, in X-Wing

I essentially can field 100 points of anything, 8 Z-95's, 7 M3-A's, 3 Defenders, 5 TIE Advanceds, etc. I'm getting tired of dealing with the plastic boxes they come in and how much space they take up. It'd be nice to have my collection in just two well organized boxes.

If one were to store the cards, large ships, and Epic ships separately, how many of these would it take?

I already have one tacklebox drawer full of tokens/dice/templates. 2 more are taken up by dials and ship tokens. That leaves one more in one more drawer and the top compartment worth of space. So that's pretty much just one of these 'tacklebox dressers'.

Could you then fit all of the ships in a second one of these? Keep in mind that Epic ships and large based ships I'll store separately.

Is this the best model? Which ones are better?

I use two of those tackle boxes to hold my collection, but I think they were closer to $20 on Amazon when I bought them. The top area can even hold two more trays, but I only keep one in my "main" box. My main box has a tray in the top for the upgrade cards, tokens, asteroid/debris things, bomb tokens, and pretty much anything else support related. The first tray is where I keep my movement templates, damage deck, and my current 100 point build. This is also the tray I carry at tournaments (rather than the whole kit). The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th trays are all separated out for the three factions, but my Scum tray has some Imperial overflow. The second box has a tray devoted to epic ships and another tray for those mission tokens. One tray is empty and the final tray has any overflow ships. I even have an extra tray in the top section for other misc overflow stuff like target lock tokens, another damage deck, and another set of templates in case I want to demo the game for someone. I keep all my pilot cards in a binder and to carry it around I used some metal hangers to build a cage in the back of my main tackle box. To do this, I drilled holes in the back and bent the hangers so they hold themselves in place. If anyone is interested in how I did all this, I can try to take some pictures and maybe give some instructions.

I use the 1374 to hold my cards, dials, and tokens, it works well except that the plastic large bases aren't very space efficient.

I have the same model box. I've been thinking of cutting foam and mounting in the top section for epic. What tray do you have that will fit and epic ship? That would be very good.

I use the same box, for what you have which sounds like a full play set of each you would need two for now but getting close to three after another wave or two. I got all mine in one currently and after the fourth will need to expand to my second. Notably the top box is capable of holding Epic ships if you wanted it to. I've been satisfied beyond expectation with my Plano case. They work great, even survived a car crash.

I just got a bunch of different style Plano 3700 and 3750 series trays and a big duffle bag. Works great. Have about 4 of the deep ones and two of the shallow ones in there.

I have a Plano 732 that holds everything I own except for the epic ships. The top section has all the cards and ship tokens in various card boxes (which will be removed when I need the space for ship storage), movement templates, and large ship bases. The two side boxes are token storage, one side for regular games, the other for epic and missions. Then the ships in the three large boxes, with some doubling up on the smaller ships.

I am likely at max capacity right now though.

So I bought one of these. Got all of my small based ships in and some of my large bases in. There are a few things left out so those will just go in a separate cardboard box full of Large Ships and their requisite bases and pegs. Then there will be a tertiary box full of my 5,000 extra small bases and pegs, extra tokens, weird scenario stuff no one cares about, etc.

You can fit a complete set of small based Scum models within like 2-3rd's of a single tacklebox. Empire and Rebels take up about a full tacklebox each. Then I have separate tackleboxes for dials and ship tokens and one for my tokens and templates and dice and damage deck, etc.

I'll try and remember to post pictures tomorrow.

I keep my stuff in a ziplock baggie. It holds everything from the core set, which is all I need to win every game. (Gallon size baggie, 12 core sets).

i use a 50 gallon drum one of those plastic ones with the screw on lids.. just toss everything inside.. as a bonus its water proof AND floats !!

Is this the best model? Which ones are better?

The answer is 2 as of Wave 7. 1 Covered it for me previously.

I have one right now but I have mainly singles of each ship with a couple exceptions. I cut some of the spacers between so I could fit all my large ships. I have room for this last wave and new core set. But I'm going to be hurting when the next wave comes out.

This hurts my head to think about... I abhor these giant tackle boxes...

Why?

I have that exact tackle box. It holds a lot. I have 1 tray for each faction and a tray for my templates, tokens, damage deck, asteroids, etc. I printed out those "tuck boxes" off the BGG site and use those to store most of my large ships. I put them in the top section. I have 3 of those cardboard boxes you win at tournaments to hold all my cards and even my large ship bases.

I have over 50 ships and most of my ships are stored on the base. It makes it really easy to just pop them out and put on the table. Maybe switch out the pilot. I am about at capacity unless I make some changes.

1) I can probably take most of my tokens and put in a little pill container to put in the top like most people do. That would free up a lot of room in that section.

2) I can put my overflow Imperials in with my Scum and Villainy box. My IG-88's can go up top, too.

3) Most importantly.....if I wanted to take them off the pegs and bases, I could hold A LOT of ships. If you want to do that, you can hold a very good amount of ships. I don't even know how many. I mean.....100 most likely. I get in 50 on the bases.

For my Epic, I spent $9 at Wal-mart and got a plastic tool box. I put in my Raider and CR-90 in their original plastic container in the toolbox. I will need to trim down the extra packaging to fit in more, but it's very do-able.

Another important bit of advice. Go look at a local store instead of purchasing online. You can avoid shipping. You can also wait until some 40% off sale at Bass Pro or something. More importantly, you CAN SWAP THE DIFFERENT TRAYS OUT OF DIFFERENT TACKLE BOXES WHEN NO ONE IS LOOKING. I've pulled out numerous tackle boxes and pulled all the trays out and looked at them all and by the time I'm done, no one coming up would really have a good clue as to which tray went to which tackle box. So, I've swapped a bunch of trays out from other Planos to get the ones that will fit my ships best!

If you want, I can take pictures of my stuff tonight and upload it. Let me know if you do want me to.

The tackleboxes that came in mine were perfect. The tiniest division possible fits a z-95 well, and in the bigger portion you can store 2 Decimators. You can put multiple ships in one division also. I keep stuff with delicate antennae and such individually in a compartment, and stuff that's pretty durable gets thrown into one larger divider. You can fit 4 M3-A Interceptors in one of the smallest dividers. 2 Defenders can be interlocked and fit in the space of 2 divisions.

One slot per bomber and advanced.

You never know until you look at a few other tackle boxes. I found most trays were good, but one tray had a big, open section for my templates to fit. So, I snagged that one, but kept the rest.

I'm actually writing up an article now on my TC blog to explain (hopefully finish by the end of the week, just need to upload the pics and edit it)...it mainly comes down to how I wanted to store my ships. I wanted to be able to store my ships on their stands so I did not have to 'construct' them each before a game. I also wanted a storage solution that was scalable...Just adding more tackle boxes wouldn't do it for me. However, everyone has different requirements for one reason or another. I don't mind doing what everyone else is doing, but I tend to ask the question 'why?' a lot. I figure, why not make a solution that works best for me, instead of everyone else?

Dunno. I have a lot of stuff (at least 2 of every ship, including large, with up to 8 TIEs, 6 Bs, etc.) and everything save the Epic ships fits into one, well-organized Plano. I am literally at capacity. Additional cards will overflow the box, so I will likely be trimming out non-essential duplicates as much as possible. Still have room for more small ships, just not more of the ridiculously sized Punishers, Starvipers, or K-Wings.

I store my cards in 3 ultra pro side loading 3x3 binders, which get stuffed unto an ultra pro messenger bag that I took the cardboard insert out of. I could save a ton of binder space if I didn't keep duplicate unique cards in there, so I'm good on card space for a long while.

I also store my ships on the stands and bases.....in a Plano box. I agree that it's important to be able to do that.

I agree with you there, I'd love a scaleable storage solution. Custom foam inserts could work(which in turn, I abhor). But you still run into the same issue with tackle boxes; you're storing smaller containers in a larger container. Let me know if you find a good solution.
