Questions about attacking/retreating of non-attackable units

By bigips, in StarCraft

Hi, everyone!

While playing SCTBG I've found difficulties explaining some situations within the rules. I've gone through the forum and didn't find answers to this, and I've decided to create the topic. So the questions are the following:

1) What shall happen if a ground attack unit attacks an air-attack unit? I.e. a scourge protects a base and a zergling attacks it. Should scourge retreat and leave the base?

2) Same with assist units - e.g. should queen retreat if it is "attacked" by the firebat?

3) Can assist units attack without main attack units in general? I mean, in order to try to survive and use their special abilities?

P.S. The game is great, thanks! We're playing in teams 2x2, following not all the rules (moving to territories, owned by an ally and not claiming his resources), playing for total destruction only, it may take up to 12 hours to end ;)

Looking forward to a Russian release of Brood War, hope it will be issued and very much hope that this time the rules will be correctly translated and I will not have to address to the original for explanation!

1) No matter if you're playing with expansion or without, a single Zergling / Firebat etc.must retreat, becase Scrouge is not an Assist unit and if it survives, attacking side retreats. That's especially usefull without BW because Scrouge reach there ridiculously high health values (8 or 9) - much ground anti-air units have very few cards with as high attack, so that they need support.

2) That's explained in instruction - if area after battle is defended only by Assist units, they have to retreat, no matter what attacking units survived.

3) Assist unit as a front line unit cannot kill anything by standard Combat cards (no attack capabilities). It may only try to survive the battle - it's possible to reach even 7 or 8(!) heath for them. The only "exception" is for Zerg Assist units - they have Technology card destroying enemy units by itself (Plague, Spawn Broodling).

BTW: Have you ever played 2v2 game 12 hours? LOL sorpresa.gif It must have been your first game gui%C3%B1o.gif

Thanks for explanations, though it seems a bit ridiculous about point 1 to me, as to a player that played SC on a PC. I mean - how can I destroy a base in the game by a scourge? ) Or else - how can a scourge protect a base from zerglings? ;)

For point 3 - so, generally I can destroy a base by attacking science vessel with queen? ) Strange, but looks fair in such situation...

P.S. As for 12 hours - yes it was one of the first games and guys thought a lot ) Anyway a lot of fun ).

Additionally you say:

The only "exception" is for Zerg Assist units - they have Technology card destroying enemy units by itself (Plague, Spawn Broodling).

What about science vessel and its radiation or templar and psionic storm?

both of those abilities either provide splash samage or increase other units' damage - but cannot allow a single assist unit to destroy an opposing units - while both plague and spawn-broodling can.
