I personally dislike flying turret ships -- I find ships with defined firing arcs more challenging and enjoyable to pilot. For those of you who have used the new Twin Laser Turrets, do you enjoy using them or does it feel like you're just throwing dice at people? I'm not trying to be inflammatory, this is a legitimate question; I might be interested in flying TLT ships in the future if they lead to interesting tactical situations.
Do you enjoy flying TLT ships?
You have to nanny your range bands enough that they're quite a bit more interesting than a standard turret.
I don't enjoy the ys (not because tlt but because I don't enjoy xs or z95s either , not a lot of maneuvering involved) but I LOVE the ks
There's even more that goes into setting conners than aligning arcs ![]()

It's just amazing how much more nuanced a PWT becomes when you demphasize the PWT

Yes.

Nah i find turret ships take less focus to fly well because as long as your not overlapping something or flying off the board your golden.
I like arcs, you need to pay attention when a move will effect if you get to shoot or not.
The k-wing is a ton of fun because you can kit it out for a lot of options. The HWK is probably
Also fun, but more accurate
Kavil is pretty fun to use since he basically has a very WIDE primary arc. I like to put Autoblaster and Unhinged on him and relish the challenge of getting into R1 of some fragile targets. I love how non-shielded ships scatter away from him like the grim reaper.
TLT sounds like the opposite of this and therefore, not so much fun.

The opposite because ships are trying to snuggle up to him like he's a teddy bear that shills for for a brand of fabric softener?
I've flown a few turret ships and, while I understand the allure of them, I find that they aren't really the X-Wing experience I'm after.
I have the most fun in this game jockeying for position and really trying to push the limit (har) of a ship's maneuverability while keeping my enemy in firing arc.
I feel a huge amount of satisfaction when I win a game using a swarm of TIEs because I expertly piloted them each turn while avoiding the statistical likelihood of totally throwing off my formation. (Not that this happens more than once in every ten times I run one, but it feels awesome when it does!)
Winning a game with turrets is just... I don't know, it feels somehow less involved to me, so I don't run them for the most part, outside of using one to fill a particular niche in my strategy (Ion turrets can be important in a pinch).
Your mileage may vary.
Why limit yourself to either or? I choose both and it's very rewarding. Corran and Y's are a blast to fly as individuals and strategic list decisions.
No. I prefer Phantoms and Interceptors. However, they add diversity to the game and contrary to what it seems to be the majority's opinion, I do believe they are a bit more challenging to fly then regular fat turrets, since you have to fly them in some sort of box formation to minimize the range 1 vulnerability.
Edited by Jehovah NettoI've only flown a few games with a four-ship list with two TLT's (Scum Y-wings), and I found them fun, but frustrating to keep alive. I don't anticipate flying an all-TLT list any time soon, and I'll definitely be going back to Interceptors from time to time, but yeah. I enjoyed flying them.
Scum Ys with TLT and Unfringed Astro is pretty satisfying.
Flying one or two Y-wings in a squadron with other fighters is fun. Flying a full squadron of them, probably not so much.
Twin laser turret is perhaps less interesting than the decisions involved in setting up an ion cannon shot and making most of the followup opportunities, but it still needs to be positioned right to avoid range 1 and support the rest of your squad.
Not a fan personally.
I dont like that they keep adding in these turrets that negate the best part of the game. Manuvering.
Turrets ruin the meta imo. And TLT follows that trend. It doesn't add any fun to the game. It takes away the fun of positioning. It allows bad pilots and players to crutch there way to victory.
I also find playing against 4 Y wings to be extremely dull and boring.
I hate PWT's a lot, but don't mind the smaller ship turrets nearly as much, especially hwk's since they HAVE to take a turret of some kind basically.
I've been running a 4 ship scum list lately with one hwk that has a TLT. Since it's a hwk at PS1, and the only TLT I have, I don't feel that bad about running it.
I would never run 3+ though, and 2 would be a stretch.
It takes away the fun of positioning.
Hang on, is only dealing with arcs considered positioning these days? I'd figure that there'd be all sorts of "fun" trying to make sure that your opponent is unable to get into range one of more than one of your ships at a time while keeping them within range three of as many of your other ships as possible.
Against Fell and Wisper? You bet I do.
I always find it fascinating reading these threads, the people that dislike Turrets are also the most likely to play Interceptors and Phantoms. The problem is that if you take away turrets from the game, the only thing that would see table time would be Interceptors Phantoms and the occasional Corran. It would be a sea of Arc dodgers with even less meta diversity than the current meta.
Now I will admit that in the recent past, there has been a slant towards large turreted ships, but that is more often to do with point fortresses more than Turret, Brobots is not a turret list and yet it does very well for a 50~ point ships, that’s not to say though that with 3 agility and the ability to take Autothrusters it's not just an interceptor on a large base.
I enjoy both turrets and Arc dodgers and everything in between, I personally find enjoyment in trying to be able to master all kinds of lists not just my pet list/ship.
I do enjoy playing them for a few reasons:
1.) Even broken stuff that I complain about is fun to try out every once a while. The time I played Dash I enjoyed it even though Super Dash is game ruining. God mode is fun every once and a while.
2.) They're new.
3.) There is /some/ nuance to flying them. Not a lot but enough to be bearable.
4.) They counter Fat Turrets and that's great. Anything to not have to face a meta dominated by +50% fat turrets.
5.) The counters to them are massed firepower from conventional arc based lists, and a wide variety of things should well against them. Flying TLT's and beating fat turrets from the meta encourages list variety by making the interesting things that counter TLT lists better meta choices.

Your comments are 100% on target.
The QQ "PWT" blah blah blah crowd simply want this game to be their style. Its not. The greatness of the game is a mixed approach of ways to win and play. If it was just arc dodging why not just play Wings of War or some airplane game?
Staying true to the Star Wars universe there are turrets, bombers and Firesprays with auxiliary arcs etc.
Diversity of this game is its STRONGEST point.
Kavil with TLT and Predator seems like a good Intercepter and phantom hunter, able to reliably snipe off stealth devices even through focus and autothrusters, if he's got focus himself

the irony is that arc-dodgers are the strongest against TLTs
the combination of thrusters and maneuverability are exactly what you need to dip into the doughnut hole and wreck the 2-dice or less primary ships at range 1.
also, the supposition that PWTs, large base boost arc-dodgers in themselves, are somehow the only things keeping soontir at bay has always struck me as pure bull. Sure, back when whisper was a broken crock of ****, you'd want someone like cheri/han on your team (unless you had figured out V.I procket Tycho or V.I r3-a2 luke...) but such is no longer the case.
A ship like soontir, the PS 9 alpha squadron pilot when blocked (because god forbid we'd want to outfly and predict our opponent, rather than throw dice at him), is not some kind of unbeatable monster that requires the inclusion of a poorly designed game mechanic. A simple block from any ship, followed by some dice are more than enough to do him in (as opposed to whisper, who can re-cloak, focus, and TL w/fcs and before could barely be blocked)
plus, we got conner nets now. Soontir is like a Z-95 with a busted engine in the face of conner nets. Sure that's more positioning, and less dice, but that's part of the fun ![]()
Don't forget the A4 title. If you want to play TLTs as a classic arc firing joust list you can do, and get rewarded with a list that can shoot 12 times!
...I find ships with defined firing arcs more challenging and enjoyable to pilot.
...
Not really because I found it impossible to get an Arc dodger in a firing arc because after all the dials revealed they can still just move out of an arc just in case they guessed the wrong direction on their dial when considering your firing arc. Remember Fat Hans was not so fat until the Phantom came in and swept out the swarms.
