If Newt had been Aliened...

...would the Alien have been a mini one?

Tough question. You could make an argument that the host did not provide as many nutrient resources as another host would provide.

However, this argument may not hold water considering the sci-fi nature of aliens. You see, in our world, a parasitoid's* larva and pupa is usually much larger than the adult. The purpose of the larval stage is to gather as many resources as necessary to form a full-functioning, health adult. However, alien chest-bursters are much, much smaller than adults, so it is impractical to assume they obtained all their necessary resources from the host. They must be obtaining other nutrients after emerging from the host, but that is never shown on screen. I would therefore predict such an alien to grow to be the same size as others. It might be a tad smaller due to nutrient deficiencies in early life, but I wouldn't expect it to be a miniature one.

*A parasitoid is a parasite that kills its host in order to complete its life cycle. A parasite usually keeps its host alive as long as possible and the death of a host is incidental to its life cycle - it isn't necessary.

She turned me into a newt.

There is meant to be some sort of host-alien connection though isn't there? Though if that's just genetic then Newt's immature state wouldn't make any difference. I dunno, it just feels like something would be wrong with using a mini host.

Considering the alien in Alien 3 did not turn out dog size, I'd say no it wouldn't be a mini alien.

Alien 3 doesn't count :P

Well, with any luck we might find out.

Save us Neill Blomkamp, you're our (franchises') only hope...

Huh? What? What you on about?

Neill Blomkamp's directing the next Alien film.

Scuttlebut says it's going to be a follow on from Aliens - disregarding the events of Alien 3 and Resurrection etc. Originally due for 2017, photography was due to begin this autumn. Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn apparently both committed to the project.

So, if it's a follow on from Aliens and Ripley and Hicks are set to make a return, then odds are that Newt might make an appearance as well.

I approve, in principle. I think she might have aged though.

Interestingly - if she's in stasis and it's broken, so she's alive but aged, she'll have grown physically, but not mentally.

The tragic thing is that the original script for Alien 3 was epic.

it was 'cold war in space', the cryo pods with newt hicks and ripley float into communist controlled 'space'

I think william gibson may have wrote it, i remember reading it ages ago and it was sooo much better as a plot than the one we got.

Well that was worth a post :)

Well, Weaver and Biehn certainly have! Whether they account for this with a time gap or stasis issue, it wouldn't surprise me to see Newt return as a young woman. And possibly (considering Blomkamp apparently has plans for a trilogy of films) use the film as a "hand over" so whichever actress portrays her can become the protagonist of the next generation of Alien films.

The idea reminds me of those 90's Alien graphic novels, which followed Hicks & Newt after Aliens...

If you're interested in the rumours etc,. you can check out some of Blomkamps' concept art here

I'm notoriously slack in forum posts as im an editor/writer in my day job so I spend soo much time laying out pages perfectly and choosing correct grammar and diction for articles i really cant be arsed to make throwaway forum posts perfect.

That job sounds proper fun, I'd love doing that!
