How much have you spent and how do you rationalize it?

By zlynn22, in X-Wing

Every person has a hobby or interest they spend money on. If you are into sports how much do you spend to got to a game. I used to go shooting on a monthly basis. Between range time ammo and equipment I would probably spend 100 to 150 a month for a 1 time event. Now I play X-Wing, how much enjoyment to I get for the same price, I play probably 2-4 times a month for a much cheaper price and still get enjoyment for my time. Entertainment always has a cost, you just have to get the bang for the buck that meets your needs.

Spent too much (probably looking to sell off some ships I rarely use), but don't care. It's been 100% disposable income, partially/mostly paid for by sales of 40K. Now, if you want to talk about rationalization and regret, look no further than 40K.

Have money.

Want spaceship.

Buy spaceship.

What is there to rationalize?

I've spent less on X-wing than on one of my camera lenses....

As for rationalization? I'm an adult in control of my own budget.

I. Don't. Rationalize.

I hide things in unmarked boxes.

Geeze. Everyone is so aggressive. 90% of the rationalizations in this thread are "**** you! I'm a grownup! I do what I want!"

Absolutely nothing compared to all of the Heroclix I have bough since 2002.

I spend about $100/wave plus the epic ships so less than $1000. I was spending $750-ish on clix per year.

Counting everything, including a lot of third-party gear, I've likely spent $1500 to $1800.

I don't need to rationalize it. I have no family, I split my mortgage, I don't smoke or drink ( ... often), I'm in good health, and I have a lot of disposable income. Comics, X-Wing, and Pathfinder are my hobbies. (Well, and poker, but poker makes me money.)

Like Jeff above, I don't need to rationalize or explain this hobby to anyone. Widowed and no children, house and car paid for I have just the basic necessities to pay for. I do smoke and just realised if I quit smoking I could spend a lot more on X-wing. Need to give this more thought.

I havent figured out exactly how much Ive spent, but with about 85 ships including one of each Epic, its easily $1,000 out of pocket. I buy most at MM or CSI now for the discounts, free shipping and no sales tax, so it could have been substantially more!

Both my son and I play, so really, Im supplying ships for two people all the time! We will play any of the three factions so we have plenty of each accordingly.

We also hunt, bowhunt, shoot, reload, collect knives, do leatherwork, WWII and historical wargaming as well as started to delve into military armor model making! And my son got into WH40K a few years ago!! I had Space Wolf sticker shock!!! When XWing is compared to these things its a small matter!

How much have I spent?

Waaaaaay too much.

How do I rationalize it?

$ =/= :D

I own at least 1 of every ship released. How do I rationalise it? I don't!

Helps my fiancée collects it as well!

Only have the ships I like and use. Cards can be proxied if I don´t like the ships.

I own around 22 ships at a roughly estimated 15 euro average, making it around 330 euro worth of ships.

Most, if not all, of what I have is given to me through the years.

Resulted from moments such as:

´You are not allowed to ask anything usefull for the house, the garden, or the kids, it has to be something specifically for you. So.., what do you want for your birthday?´

Most of the time I received money with the explanation: ´This is for this game where you can buy separate figurines for.´

Or as a friend arrived at my birthday-party: ´You can´t have a Star Wars game without the Millenium Falcon, here you go.´

(handing over the gift-wrapped box)

I know right.

It's quite funny reading though "I'm an adult so I'll do what I want!" comments.

Especially given that, people that spend thousands of dollars on spaceship toys...probably not as grown-up as they want people to think they are.

Some of you folks really went balls deep, I just wonder how you guys store this stuff without getting worried an earthquake or something will wreck all of it. I would have spent more on tabletop hobbies this year but I decided to get both current gen gaming consoles instead. I'm hesitant to start up a full blown imperial force right now, as i'm more interested in doing the First Order or whatever...basically..i'll start making purchasing plans when I know what is actually happening with this game. And hopefully all will become clear this friday/over the weekend.

I used to play with the Micro machine Star Wars toys as a kid. Now I have nicer miniatures that have a game that goes with them to play with as an adult.

Still cheaper than 40k, but I still play 40k...

How much have I spent?

Lots - but it's still a lot cheaper than 40k :P

How do I rationalise it?

grid.jpg

At least 1 of every ship including Huge ships. Several of some like TIEs, Xs and As. Don't want to add it up. How do I rationalize it? I tell myself it makes me happy to play it once a week despite being only an average player. That justify the cost? Probably not considering some stuff I got just for the cards and at least 1(of 3) Imperial Aces box I had absolutely no reason to pick up but did. Also have a 2nd Falcon I've yet to use though I did let someone else barrow it. Got it the back of my head to convert it to some other 1300 variant.

On a brighter note though, I did only buy 1 of each from wave 7. The store had limited stock and I decided not to be a tool when I got there early that day and didn't know they had even gotten wave 7 in.

I can't justify it.

I buy at least one of everything in a wave, and then get tempted by reading the forum to buy 4 of stuff. I have more than 1 of almost all small ships and I play the game maybe once a month and that's optimistic.

Me and my mate tried to use X-wing as a way to get all of our friends off of 40k, but what actually ended up happening is we started playing board games as a group.

Once a month we will get 5/6 of us together for a weekend and play board games and me and that one guy try and sneak in an X-wing game. We all live too far away to do an evening x-wing or something.

The others never bought in to it (and I have so much stuff they don't need to) but then they don't really think about it much either so if they play it sucks for them, as they pull out random ships and upgrades (with no knowledge of what isn't cost of mathematically effective that is gleaned from the forum) and becasue I rarely play I use lists I've been planning for ages with my new stuff.

I've never used an outrider, not flown my scum Y's, don't really use imps at all.

Yeah I can't justify it.

I live in Suffolk, England and it's seems to be a black hole for x-wing.

When you look on the UK facebook page there's a map of pins for the locations of all the members and Suffolk has one pin in it. Me.

Spent loads. Don't care :)

More than I reasonably should have.

It's not crack-cocaine? I don't know, that's all I can come up with

~1000$ (mono faction player), played for 2½ years, over 300 games.

That is a lot of hours of fun so far, not counting the time spent painting ships, talking about X-Wing with the community (local and here), list building etc.

I'd say there is no need to "rationalize" anything.

It is good value for the money.

spent lots.... told wife it all came in the core set :)
