Weapon Critique

By Blackbird888, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I have a few weapons that need criticism. I would also encourage this thread to be used by anybody else who has homebrewed weapons.

Walking stick/staff/cane

Skill: Melee

Damage: +2

Critical: 5

Range: Engaged

Encumbrance: 3

Hard Points: 0 or 2

Price/Rarity: 75/1

Special: Disorient 2

Add 1 Boost die to attempts to convince others that a walking stick is not a weapon.

Based on Dao’s weapon (which I’m surprised isn’t in the core book). I actually bumped the critical up by 1, so it doesn’t have a better critical than the refined cortosis staff. I’m split on the hard points: on the one hand it is just a pole, on the other hand you can do a lot with a simple pole. I don’t actually know how you would go about giving a stick superior customization, but attaching something like a weighted head wouldn’t be that difficult (you could glue a rock on one end and call it a day). Not an exciting weapon, but the next couple are related, so I started here.

Battlestaff/quarterstaff

Skill: Melee

Damage: +3

Critical: 5

Range: Engaged

Encumbrance: 4

Hard Points: 2

Price/Rarity: 200/3

Special: Cumbersome 3, Disorient 3, Linked 1, Unwieldy 3

A battlestaff requires two hands to use.

They crop up in KotOR and KotOR 2, Ep. III, and Rey has one (probably). Based on the electrostaff.

Lightstaff

Skill: Melee

Damage: +2

Critical: 5

Range: Engaged

Encumbrance: 3

Hard Points: 0

Price/Rarity: 225/4

Special: Defensive 1.

A lightstaff requires two hands to use. Spend and action and commit 1 Force die; the lightstaff can be used with the Lightsaber skill and gains the Cortosis weapon quality as long as the die remains committed.

Lightstaff =/= saberstaff, or double-bladed lightsaber. And I should point out that it doesn't have the same effect as the refined cotosis staff (i.e. shorting out lightsabers), but it simple resists Sunder.

Rodian death blade

Skill: Melee

Damage: +2

Critical: 2

Range: Engaged

Encumbrance: 3

Hard Points: 2

Price/Rarity: 1500(restricted)/7

Special: Defensive 1, Pierce 2, Vicious 2

A Rodian death blade has a built-in Poison Reservoir attachment (see Lords of Nal Hutta p. 105); this does not count towards the weapon’s total hard points.

Gand shockprod staff

Skill: Melee

Damage: +4

Critical: 3

Range: Engaged

Encumbrance: 4

Hard Points: 2

Price/Rarity: 1000/7

Special: Cumbersome 3, Pierce 2, Stun Setting, Unwieldy 3

A Gand shockprod staff requires two hands to use. When using the Stun Setting, a shockprod staff does not benefit from the Pierce 2 quality.

Any and all feedback would be great.

As it stands, the walking stick doesn't occupy any different design space from the truncheon, really. It costs 1 more encumbrance so hiding it costs +1 difficulty, but you get a boost on that roll so you get a net 0. Honestly, it's probably unnecessary.

i liked your weapons, would you like to design chiss weaponry with me? i am very bad at it TT :D

How did I miss these replies?

The walking stick isn't intended to be better or anything, but it's there to be what it is, a walking stick. And, sorry nac, but I don't know enough about the Chiss weapons to help that much; the only advice I can offer is to find what its similar to and adjust accordingly. If you have a source better than Wookieepedia, all the better.

Anyway...

I scrapped the lightstaff design I had above for this:

Lightstaffs can be made out of a variety of materials – wood, bone, metal, or plastics. The player can spend 200 credits to acquire the materials, or make an average Negotiation, Streetwise, or Survival check (Survival if harvesting the materials from the wild).

Once the character obtains the materials, he can construct the staff with an average Mechanics, Knowledge (Lore), or Survival check. The construction takes several hours. Use the following results

  • Multiple Successes can reduce the construction time, while Failure means it takes much longer.
  • Failure with Threat means some of the materials are damaged beyond use, and must be acquired again.
  • Success with Advantage means some of the cost is reduced, or adds customization or ornamentation to the staff. 3 Advantage can be used to reduce the Encumbrance or Critical rating by 1.
  • Triumph may be used to increase the hard points by 1.
  • Success with Threat means the process takes longer and costs more credits than expected. 3 Threat increases encumbrance by 1.
  • Despair reduces hard points by 1.

Skill: Melee (or Lightsaber; see below)

Damage: +3

Critical: 5 (before potential results, see above)

Range: Engaged

Encumbrance: 4

Hard Points: 3 (before potential results; see above)

Price/Rarity: 200/10

Special: Cortosis (see below), Cumbersome 3, Defensive 1, Unwieldy 3

A lightstaff requires two hands to use. The constructor of a lightstaff may commit 2 Force die; as long as the Force dice remains committed, the lightstaff may be used with the Lightsaber skill and gains the Cortosis weapon quality.
