Unique Imperial Upgrades

By Taiowaa, in X-Wing

Hey everyone, i just wanted to know if i´m the only one thinking about this.

Rebels have Astromechs

Scums have Salvaged Astromechs and Illicit upgrades

and both of them have the possibility to carry secondary turrets.

What does the empire have that the other 2 factions don´t, to justify that there is no Imperial only upgrade type?

Well you might say the empire has Vader Crew. A long time only upgrade that did 100% garanteed damage but then Feedback Array came out and sum has this option as well.

Am i missing something so obvious to everybody?

Ruthlessness is a great card if we weren't stuck in a 2-ship meta. It's also very characterful.

Also, the Emperor, of course.

Rebel Captive was paramount in the wave 4 phantom meta, and is still a very powerful card.

I too have thought though that the Imps should have an upgrade slot only they can use. Like an Experimental Tech slot or something. TIE Defender, Punisher and maybe the Advanced Prototype would have been ships to have that slot.

Ysanne Isard, Mara Jade and Moff "Oot The Airlock" Jerjerod. The fairly awesome Agent Callus incoming in Wave 8.

Until Wave 8, Cloaking is Imperial Only, and they have the only two-crew slot upgrade, the Emperor.

Fashion sense.

SHOTS FIRED

Well they used to have a cloaking device as an exclusive.

I'm convinced FFG doesn't want The Empire to have anything that only they have.

I'm not convinced that the Empire should have unique slots. Their ships are ubiquitous, manufactured. Everything is uniform.

Imperials if anything should have mass produced uniformity.

If I were to give FFG one critique in this, I'd say that pricing the Z-95s at 12 points was ultimately a mistake, allowing the Empire to Swarm was perhaps their best defining trait.

They have the TIE-Only Twin Ion Engine mod.

I think more TIE-Only upgrades is a design space worth exploring, giving boosts to Imperial ships only.

For example (building off my previous post):

"Experimental Tech" - 0pts - TIE-Only Modification

Your upgrade bar gains the {experimental tech} icon.

Then a host of Experimental Tech upgrades exclusive to Imperials only. Sounds perfect for Imperial Aces II ! :P

well i see that the empire has really potent crew cards but it is not that the other factions have Their Faction Only crew cards as well!

cloaking is a good point but as of the next wave its not empire only, despite the fact that the scum version is not as potent as the imperial one.

as if the mod slot isn´t one of the most contestet slots overall ;)

On Interceptors and Phantoms yes, but TIE Fighters, Bombers and Defenders aren't reaching for Autothrusters and Adv Cloaking Device. Their mod slots are filled with different upgrades often, depending on what the ship is being used for.

Remember this is substituting the mod slot with the new slot. New Exp Tech upgrades could easily out-contest current modifications for the mod slot. Perhaps even a new Exp Tech that would compete with ACD for Phantoms.. ;)

I'll trade you astromechs for rebel captive.

i'd trade both for offboard capital ship fire support.

We don't negotiate with terrorists.

Or reinforcements.

We have the best ships piloted by he finest aces in the galaxy, the imperial navy has no need of the upgrades the scum of the galaxy relies on.

Superior in every way our forces have nothing to fear from this poultry rebellion and the criminal elements they associate with.

Now excuse me I promised my twi'lek slave a new wookie hide coat so I'm off to hunt a few slaves.

What you're missing is that the game doesn't need symmetry in order to have balance.

Rebels and Scum are both thematically a lot more individualistic. The astromech slot gives Rebels an extra "character" for the ships that can carry it: they're a military, but they're not as uniform as the Empire. The illicit slot shows off that no two Scum ships are necessarily alike: they specialize in black-market parts, jury-rigged upgrades, and dirty tricks.

The Empire has a high-tech theme (reflected in the aesthetic of their ships, superior access to cloaking, more widespread access to the system slot, etc.) but mostly the faction is about a well-trained and "samey" military force. They don't have access to a unique slot because there's nothing unique about them--their schtick is faceless, overwhelming force.

I'm not convinced that the Empire should have unique slots. Their ships are ubiquitous, manufactured. Everything is uniform.

Imperials if anything should have mass produced uniformity.

As if the Z-95 really sees much play anyway.

Until Wave 8, Cloaking is Imperial Only, and they have the only two-crew slot upgrade, the Emperor.

The only reliable cloaking system is still Imperial only.

I've fought against more Z-swarms than say for example Sycks with Ions.

Don't count your chickens too soon.

The chickens surrendered in the end, unfortunately they surrendered to General Tao.

It did not end well for them.

isnt it Tso?

There is definitely general Tao at my local. I've seen Tso and Tsau as well... possibly a mutation?

Poultry rebellion ?

What did the Empire ever do to upset domesticated fowl ?
