A fun 95 point list with Corran and Luke.

By InstantAequitas, in X-Wing Squad Lists

TL;DR/BLUF; Two Dope Jedi (In their Stunt Fighters) 95 points:

Luke Skywalker (28)+Lone Wolf (2)+ R5-P9 (3)+ Engine Upgrade (4)+ Ion Torpedoes (5).

Corran Horn (35)+ Push the Limit (3)+ R2-D2 (4)+ Fire Control System (2)+ Engine Upgrade (4)+ Ion Torpedoes (5).

Recently I shelved a squad concept that I loved very much and took a break from playing the game while I dealt with a very busy summer. When I got back into the game, I was ready to just have some fun and see what I could use that went in the opposite direction of my normal squad building techniques. Normally, I build a squad using very few upgrades, synergistic pilot abilities, and some form of stress dealing mechanic. For this new plan, I decided to max out every available slot on two pilots who could operate independently of each other. Both pilots should have a balance of attack and survivability that brings the end game to the very beginning.

So I decided first on Luke Skywalker+Lone Wolf+R5-P9+Engine Upgrade (37)

Lone Wolf Luke is by and far the most fun X-wing I have ever flown and adding Engine Upgrade gives the X-wing the repositioning ability it craves. I've used Luke+R5-P9+Lone Wolf extensively before, so I felt comfortable flying him against multiple enemies.

For the other ship, I went with another strong closer, Corran Horn. Went with:

Corran Horn+PtL+FCS+R2-D2+Engine Upgrade (48)

Corran is strong enough to carry the end game by himself, and with Engine Upgrade, he becomes very slippery.

With 15 points remaining, I came to the realization that an additional ship might actually hinder the performance of the list, but I needed a way to control the closure rate of the enemy forces. Then, it hit me that the Ion Torpedoes could do just that. At five points each, they offer three advantages to these individual fighters:

1. A four die attack at ranges 2-3.

2. Elimination of the bonus defense for R3 shots.

3. The ion splash effect that controls swarms.

The one-off attack is decent on Corran thanks in part to FCS giving him the target lock for his second attack which, after using the first attack to strip tokens, usually connects as a TL+F vs. un-modified shot. Luke suffers from having to choose TL as a single action, but creeping forward after Corran ions the rest during round 1 allows for a good follow up ion from Luke round 2 which sets up Corran to move in for round three double shot. This economy of force usually outpaces the enemy's ability to force down either Luke or Corran early on, which only makes it easier on my two independent fighters to single out the survivors.

Obviously, there is no perfect list and there are definitely huge shortcomings with it, especially when vs. ships that deal automatic damage or use control tactics, but the whole point was that it was different and fun.

I really like lone wolf Luke too. But he's going to be a Sad Panda on Sept. 4th. Poe does everything Luke does, only better and cheaper....
