Gallant Haven: worthless?

By BigBearCDN, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Hey all. I've had some recent success with dual AF2s. One as a carrier and one as the gunner.

I havent put Gallant Haven on the carrier as I can't imagine its worth its points cost. A Rhymer ball is just going to engage you at medium range making Haven range 1 ability useless and I tend to cast my squadrons out ahead of me to try and drop a few prescious shields down before the inevitable Demolisher attack run.

Anyone had any success with it. Does it depend on your opponent basically not understanding how it works?

Cheers

I ran up against a very successful use of it in conjunction with character X-Wings to tarpit and eventually destroy many of my fighters. I knew exactly what it did, but Distance 1 is a decent area, so he sent his squadrons out with a command and then moved the ship up to follow them. I still won, but it neutered by squadrons for most of the game.

It also makes both squadrons and ship essentially immune to any squadron other than Major Rhymer, which is kind of a big deal since only one faction can take him. It doesn't suit my playstyle, though (frankly Assault Frigates as a whole don't).

It may be worth it to not use character squadrons in conjunction with it; generics will at least take some damage so your opponent may be more willing to attack, whereas characters will usually mitigate it entirely and be seen as invulnerable.

It's not worthless, but it's definitely not suiting your playstyle ;)

I've had excellent luck flying the Gallant Haven in the thick of things rather than kiting away. With Expanded Hangar Bays, a sizeable part of his damage output will be the squadrons that you get with him. Reducing damage by 1 really ensures fighter superiority.

I did play it aggressively with 4 X-Wing squadrons including Wedge and it's probably one of the ship I enjoy playing the most :)

Thanks guys. I may try this strategy. Perhaps and fat screen of X or B wings will have my opponent thinking twice about bearing down on it too fast. Thought I might build a fleet with Yavaris hanging out in the AF2s shadow to screen it from fire. Resist damage with Haven then double tap my squads with Yavaris.

If you're playing against me, Probably... My opponents seem to have to choice of Fly into an Asteroid Field, or fly into the Close Range Front Arc of a Vic-1 with Expanded Launchers... >.>
