Viability of BlockORS in Epic?

By FuturistiKen, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I get that the blockORS (Outer Rim Smuggler with Intel Agent, Navigator, and Anti-Pursuit Lasers for those unfamiliar) build is just sort of a goofy stunt to troll your buddies with but not really viable in Standard matches. But I wonder if in Epic, where it only represents about 10% of your total points, it might be workable? Just seems like it could do some good work splitting up enemy squads to isolate targets while not being a particularly appealing target itself. Might also be useful for covering up the bits of your CR90 that aren't in the secondary arcs. Maybe even worth trading APLs for Tactical Jammer?

I just like the idea of flying a large base right at a TIE swarm and watching them scatter or crash. This also may have something to do with having won a second Falcon expansion that I don't really need and am trying to get some use out of...

I think having a couple of ORS with Tactical Jammers would be worth the points to keep your other stuff flying a bit longer.

They are not as good in Epic as they are in Standard, but as you point out, they don't need to be as good as they're a lower percentage of your cost.

Their use is best identified with how many points of your opponents they capture, and how long those points are kept ineffectual.

So, in a 33 point list, a BlockORS is actually fairly dominant, as the combo getting into place can guarantee a victory, unless your victim can somehow escape or regenerate.

Whereas, in a 330 point list, a BlockORS is likely to die from combined fire fairly quickly, so you're unlikely to have gotten 33 points' worth of controll1 out of them.

1Not a typo. Think about it...

I recommend the block Fringer with IA and APL over the block ORS, the BR and 1 hard gives it much more flexibility in terms of blocking. It is also 33 points

Well played, sir. I'll admit that I did indeed have to think about it for a few minutes.

This is a very compelling idea, as the barrel roll certainly gives the Fringer more options. I assume Navigator isn't included in this build because the stress would keep you from using barrel roll?

Navigator has nothing to do with stress.

It's not included because the ORS has 2 crew slots, while the Fringer only has one.

Wow. Yeah. Clearly I'm not smart enough for X-Wing, gonna go back to...ummm...something else, that dumb people can do...
