large ships

By frogy84, in X-Wing

Does one need to buy all the large ships when i started i i bought them all thinking you ghad to have them. now i building a scum list i don't like the look of ether of there large ship do i still need them.

I really dislike the focus and power on large ships. I wish it'd stop.

However, if you play imperial: Lambdas are AWESOME. And decimators are as powerful as you've probably heard. Both good investments for a new player.

I never bought the IGs. I borrowed a friends and learned to play them so I could fight them, but I have no real interest in paying for them.

Firesprays are a dud right now. Both Scum and Imp. Anyone who says otherwise can simply go look at tourney results and learn to be quiet. (Also, I played firesprays for a long long time, cant make them work).

Hounds Tooth is pretty awesome though! Try that one? =)

Rebels: I herd u liek turretz

Go back to 40k... SCUM has three Large Ships by the way. Learn how to spell too.

Just ****!

I adore the Aggressor, but that's because it suits my sensibilities. Kitted out right, it can dance across the board - or be a simple terrier-with-a-bone jousting sledgehammer. Few things are quite as satisfying as a Fat Han realising he's actually going to lose the damage race if he keeps trying to play catch-me-if-you-can... ;)

Firesprays can be good if built properly, but is still a little undercooked. Not really its fault, insomuch as it's less agile than a YT-1300, and agility 2 is in a tricky spot for durability - too few hitpoints to just tank everything by being punched in the face, not few green dice to depend on keeping you unscathed. If you don't like 'em, you don't need 'em.

Hounds tooth? Well, too new to tell. It's a super-shuttle; it'll die quick but provide good value until then (provided you invested points into it carefully). But you can probably live without it, too. I'd personally skip Scyks and StarVipers (beyond those sweet sweet autothruster cards, anyway) in preference to overlooking this one, though - there's some great options here.

Starvipers are a great ship. Even the PS1 pilots

they are all awesome and I love flying them I think you only need to get 1 or 2 of each. more so now tactician has been nerfed

In order of greatness

YT-2400

YT-1300

Firespray

YV-666

Aggressor

Shuttle

Decimator

that's my list anyway :D

Hounds Tooth is really a great ship. Teaches you how to gain value. How to create different deployments. Has lots of choices for customization. yeh.

Aggressor is kinda cool too.

Woe ye all when the super turret JM5000 comes in.

The Firespray is my favourite ship and was the very first ship I purchased after the Core Set. It's fun to fly, viable in a tournament, and incredibly adaptable.

Also, players who complain about Turret ships won't be able to say anything.

  • No, you don't need large ships to play a game of X-wing. All you need is 100 points in a single faction and all the templates, dice, and damage cards found in the (latest) core set.
  • Yes, Large ships are powerful in competitive formats and tend to dominate the meta with Nationals being won by a list that has a large ship. However they are not the only ships on the table. There was also 2 B-wings in that list bringing two small ships as well.
  • No, you don't need to have every expansions (to include the big epic ones) to make a competitive list but having more expansions does give you more options and having more options does give you an advantage in list building but not necessarily on the playing field.
  • Yes, Arc dodgers are weak against turrets but to be honest Arc dodgers are so powerful that anything that is not a turret will just get eaten alive by them, even with an auxiliary firing arc or not. Fat Hans didn't became a dominant list until Wave 4 when the TIE Phantom came out.

Hope these objective facts clear up any misunderstandings.

Don't get me wrong, I love Firesprays - VI Boba w/ EU is a staple of my lists - but if someone wants scum but isn't a fan of bigger ships, it's definitely the first you can afford to leave at the door.

Aggressors are list-defining though, and the Hounds Tooth looks pretty darn nifty, the arguments can be made to learn to love 'em.

Even then, if you really hate big stuff... Z-95s and Y-wings are far from shabby. :)

To answer the original question, no you do not need to buy any large base ships.

Not doing so just means you won't have access to the upgrade cards that come with that ship.

That said, we are starting to see older upgrade cards re-released in the newer expansions so it is possible any upgrade cards that come with a large base would be potentially available with future small base ships.

OT: One does not need to buy the large ships, but they do provide options and new challenges. Personally, I'm not very good at flying large ships but I've seen players thread them between ships and asteroids with ease, which much feel pretty good. The Hounds Tooth provides something different for Scum, unleashing mini broadsides. I only have one IG-2000, but many (many) people love to field two of these to great effect. I didn't much like the aesthetic for the Scum large ships originally but now I love the YV-666 and the Aggressor is growing on me.
