Proposal for New X-Wing Jargon

By ObiWonka, in X-Wing

If people put effort into being good at the game (to a point where they want minimal effort to actually talk about it), is it really wrong to expect people "tuning in" to put a fraction of that same effort into understanding those discussions?

The difficulty of "getting" acronyms is VASTLY overstated, and nicknames can be implied from context unless you're incapable of parsing THAT in which case what are you doing on the internet.

@ Rodafowa -

Most people aren't ****s about that sort of thing.

Nice... because I dont agree with you, you swear at me.... because thats really going to make me want to BOTHER asking you for explainations as to what your talking about. :\

Swearing AT you would be "Most people aren't ****s about that sort of thing, you ****".

That being said, apologies if I caused offence.

Edit - Oh and your point about ' Because among people who think and talk about X-Wing a lot ,' This is exactly what I mean about elitiism... dont you think that ' newbies ' or just other people who play might like to understand what you are saying in order to improve their game??

what the hell is an AC/DC build?

ZOMG SHUT UP NOOB NOBODY'S TALKING TO YOU

;) ;) ;) ;)

It's four Tempest Squadron Tie Advanced with the new TIE-X1 title from the Raider and Accuracy Corrector (AC), plus Dark Curse (DC). It's basically an Imperial-flavoured play on the popular BBBBZ list, with some of the same strengths and weaknesses.

Moreover, I barely stand posts that are entirely made of acronyms like HLC, AC, ATC and jargon like warthogs, pancakes, brobots.

Everyone knows that AC means Armour Class or Assault Cannon, don't they? :) :)

I thought it stood for Alternating Current....

I don't think this kind of comment is warranted, especially since it reflects the topic of newcomers and jargon understanding and here was a new player asking for a clarification of a piece of jargon.

Also that could also be T+ACx4/DC or TACx4;DC or TACTACTACTAC/DC. AC/DC isn't actually the list you are thinking it is as Accuracy Corrector and Dark Curse isn't a list.

Jargon can have the opposite effect if you condense it too much.

Nah, I know that first part was meant in jest.

And not that new in the game, but sometimes I do have trouble following all the acronyms. I knew what the AC was in the AC/DC, but for the love of me, I couldn't decipher what DC was.

I still don't know what the hell is a pancake (other than a tasty pastry), and I've been playing well over a year.

:D

In summary - yeah, jargon can be an alienating barrier to entry, but it's also a) a more efficient means of communicating ideas with other people who're equally well-versed in it and b) kind of inevitable in specialised conversations between enthusiasts on an enthusiast forum. Fortunately most people here don't seem to have a problem with explaining what they mean if someone specifically asks*, but that's never likely to be the default mode of expression.

(* - Oh, and a lot of the stuff that's likely to cause confusion can be found in Mr. Froggies' glossary at https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/129794-x-wing-slang-glossary/ which is in MJ's list of useful XWMG links in the stickied post at the top of the forum.)

1) Is it pro or 1337 to speak like that?

2) How is someone that has the game in french, spanish or swedish going to understand

1) It's all fun and games. You know, like X-Wing.

2) Croissant is French.

Four winky faces isn't enough for you??

Man, for starting a thread about a tongue-in-cheek reference to the " donut hole* " I sure hurt a lot of butts. :(

*That's the nickname for the inability of anything equipped with Outrider title and an HLC** to shoot at anything within Range 1 of it.

**Heavy Laser Cannon.

I hate to tell you this but jargon is literally unavoidable. It's basic human nature to find ways to communicate faster and more efficiently. humans are always creating new words, and abbreviations for things. There is nothing elitist about having jargon. In my experience this forum is good about explaining if you ask, the opposite of elitism. The truth is being angry about jargon existing is like being angry at thousands of years of human evolution... You are welcome to be angry, but it doesn't change anything, and no amount of complaining will change it. Perhaps a sticky explaining the jargon could be helpful for new readers however.

Very good, but now please explain what is an EU pancake if other than this:

Aland_pancake.jpg

EU pancake: large, turreted ship with Engine Upgrade modification. Next.

I'd have thought that Condor would have been a better nickname for a K-Wing than an Albatross.

@Radowfa: I owe you an apology. I took that line at face value and missed the quad winky emotes.

Strangely on topic, I didn't catch your e-mote jargon there... ;)

"it's never an issue to stop and catch someone up who's not familiar with the nuances of what's being communicated." :D

Here we see a pair of TLT* Y-Wings flying in formation:

kruvasan-445x280.jpg

*Twin Laser Turret

also the K-wing is K-mart, or the Drunk Albatross

I don't think I'm going to be able to call it anything but the Drunk Albatross anymore...

Sigh. I still don't know what "z 95 spam" means. I am not even sure that's the correct reference.

Other than that, I see both sides of the argument. Some of slang is intuitive, and some not.

Spam is any ship build repeated for the whole squad.

so 4 blue squadron pilots with AC's (Air Conditioners of course :P ) would be b-wing spam.

z-95 is the headhunter ship.

The abbreviations and jargon are of course a natural growth of the language used while discussing the game. Anyone who follows these forums will be able to understand it eventually, if they take the time. Some people may have more difficulty keeping it all straight, especially as more and terms develop. Isn't there a topic about the abbreviations on this board? It should probably be sticky if it isn't already.

However there is no excuse for making fun of 'noobs' who don't know the more subtle implications of some terms. Acronyms are failing easy to figure out (although memorizing every card in the game is not as easy), but some terms are loosely defined and can be taken by different people to mean slightly different things, as the above 'pancake' reference suggests. So please be tolerant of people asking legitimate questions and seeking knowledge about our favorite game. Even the most knowledgable and/or conceited among us are mere novices to others.

For those who have been here awhile and know the lingo, remember there is a stickied thread in M.J.'s thread links that has abbreviations explained in them. It is already posted in this thread and that series of stickied threads will really help out newer players because that's why it was created.
