Pardon my Anglais... but I believe you mean Crescent.

Chat. Pardon my French .
I'm aware the picture is a pastry to pâtisserie comparison by the picture.
I was relating the food's heritage Croissant en Français means Crescent en Anglais. And now it's less amusing because it's been explained.

Or the armada AF. But thats more goldfish or guppy to me. Whale is too generic.
Do you mean the all-light-color non-atmospheric grass-eater? Cuz that's the shuttle.

I don't get the point of obscuring the language with jargon. It makes texts hard to read and understand, and is hostile to newcomers or people that don't lurk the forums all day long.
Moreover, I barely stand posts that are entirely made of acronyms like HLC, AC, ATC and jargon like warthogs, pancakes, brobots.
Even worse when someone asks for a particular effective build and people answer in bulk "Go for AC/DC" and they don't bother to explain what the hell that means. Is it supposed to be fun? Is your life so busy you can answer a forum post, but you cannot bother to write whole words? Is it pro or 1337 to speak like that?
The game is edited in many languages in many countries. How is someone that has the game in french, spanish or swedish going to understand why "a AS HLC AT brobot is effective against a PTW pancake" when their cards have absolutely different words on them, without more effort that should be needed?

At the expense of obscuring the message, and saves your precious precious keystrokes that you can instead use for... writing more jargon-ridden internet posts.
it's not really our problem if you can't parse

To a certain extant I get what you're saying; sometimes it takes me a while to figure out what all the acronyms and jargon mean especially for new cards, so yeah for the sake of newcomers we should be more considerate.
On the other hand, I don't get why you're so ticked off by this. I understand this is not your first time ranting about this issue but sorry to say you might be fighting a uphill battle. When 2 or 3 people start communicating between each other in the same language we start making up our own word's to describe objects and situations. That's just how it works. How do you think street language come about? If you want to eliminate jargon from the forum you're probably better off promoting a dead language like Latin (if you can find anyone who speaks it) rather than getting everyone to speak "proper" english.
BTW XWMG is meant to be fun and part of that fun is making up jargon for our favorite ships and cards. Besides I'm sure most people are capable of figuring out what all the jargon flying around mean, so relax, bro.
Personally I agree with Azapse... TLAs (three letter abreviations) and acronyms are a pain in the butt! I have enough TLA's stuck in my head from VP (voice procedure) where time spent speaking was/is a premium (10 sec transmission time if I remember) without adding more for a game created by people who think its cool.
And AC/DC to me is a Band not a build... how am I supposed to 'work it out' and know what your talking about... along with thunderstruck or stress builds???
To me typing like that alone is an attempt at creating an elitism feel
and if anything puts me off this forum (although if you explain what something is* then put the acroynim afterwards but then use the acronym going forward in that thread thats understandable (in both senses of the word
))
*ie so I'm not having to search the reast of the fourm to find out what your talking about
Edited by slasher956See, I store things as short-form mnemonics to begin with, acronyms mean no decompression, and the parsing process just sideloads them anyway when reading.

You could ask? Most people aren't ****s about that sort of thing.

Thing is though, when you get a bunch of people who're enthusiastic enough about a subject to want to gather on a messageboard to discuss it in their free time, jargon is going to happen. Because among people who think and talk about X-Wing a lot, it's way easier for both reader and writer to use, say, "Fat Han" as a shorthand term rather than typing out "a YT-1300 build with Han Solo as pilot and many upgrade cards almost always including C3PO crew, the purpose of which is to maintain a respectable offensive output whilst being unusually durable and thus leverage the timed nature of a tournament game to be more effective than its superficial stats might indicate" .
And yeah, it does have a bit of an unfortunate alienating effect in dividing those "in the know" from those who aren't, but in general if I'm talking about, f'rinstance, how to beat a 4 Y-Wing-With-Twin-Laser-Turret list, it's natural to assume that other people who're into the game enough to be interested in discussing it at that level of detail will know what I mean if I'm talking about "the doughnut hole" or "Brobots" or the "AT" upgrade or "BBBBZ", and it would be kind of patronising and a waste of my time and theirs to break everything down to first principles. Again, I'm more than happy to explain a term if someone specifically says that they're lost (and I don't think I've ever, EVER seen anybody mocked on here for not grokking an acronym or a bit of jargon), but generally speaking, as Tipperary alluded to, it's more efficient to assume someone understands the meaning and implication of certain common terms and go from there.
what the hell is an AC/DC build?
It's not that I cannot parse the acronyms. To me "HLC" sounds in my head directly as "Heavy Laser Canon", not "Aech Ell See". And of course, for fluidity of conversation, you end using acronyms to shorten redundant words.
But it is something totally different to purposely make up jargon for the lulz. The first couple of times I read the term "pancakes" I had sincerely no idea what was that about. Today I am not even sure if it refers to all PWT big ships, or only the rebel ones, or if it will also refer to the Jumpmaster, or if it only refers the YT-1300. Sure you can guess it from the context. But when the context is digging thru tens of other threads, the whole forum acquires an unwelcoming hermetic tone.
I have referred many friends, newcomers to the game, to this forum for entertaining reading and invaluable advice that cannot be gotten elsewhere.
Unfortunately, in all cases, they have quit after a few hours because they can barely get anything that is told. Not only because of the acronyms (that somehow you can try and guess by mentally going thru all the card titles in English until you find the one that matches the acronym), but also the real jargon like warthogs, pancakes, chivi, brobots, X of doom, doughnut holes, and now, croissants. Soon some newbie will check this forum for first time and think that we all have some weird pastry fetish going on.

Nice... because I dont agree with you, you swear at me.... because thats really going to make me want to BOTHER asking you for explainations as to what your talking about. :\
Edit - Oh and your point about ' Because among people who think and talk about X-Wing a lot ,' This is exactly what I mean about elitiism... dont you think that ' newbies ' or just other people who play might like to understand what you are saying in order to improve their game??
(note - also more often than not I read forums on an IPad / smart phone and dont like typing on one of them so dont post much on any forum)
