TIE Punisher

By Warlon, in X-Wing

OK. So this is a little OT, but it made me think. Why would the TIE Punisher not have a hyperdrive? I've envisioned creating missions from Mission Control wherein a flight of TIE Punishers perform interstellar bombing missions escorted by other hyperdrive capable TIE's (i.e. Defender, Advanced).

They are big enough that they should have hyperdrives. In fact Bombers should have hyperdrives and shields, but I guess they get Agi 2 and still BR because they omitted those systems. Maybe the boost on punishers took up the hyperdrive slot.

But I do agree that Punishers should be long range heavy bombers, probably supplementing Decimators and escorted by more agile hypercapable TIEs.

You're not kidding that they're big enough. I have a tackle box that I put all of my miniatures in, I had to rearrange EVERYTHING just to fit two of them in there.

If I remember what was said when the Punisher was talked about in the RPGs, it is hyperspace capable, actually.

Edit: Never mind, I checked. It does make me wonder what makes the Punisher a better long range fighter than the Bomber, given they have the same flight time ("2 days of consumables")

I'm looking forward to go Macross Missile Massacre with Red line and extra munitions, FCS, and Cluster Missiles and maybe Plasma torpedoes.

Got one rolling now with 5 ties

Flew the mini swarm like crap but the resulting traffic jam let redline bag soonts, Carnot, and whisper

So far so good :)

What was your build with the punisher?

When you get the chance, do share your build. Nothing makes me happier than seeing Soontir and Whisper destroyed...

If you go with the Generics, I think you at min need the following as your starting point.

Cutlass Squadron Pilot + Accuracy Corrector + Extra Munitions + Autothrusters.

Yeah I know you only have one evade, but it will help cut down on the amount of damage you take.

From there you can build out to what type of weapons platform do you want it to be. Do you want it to be a bomber, torpedo carrier, or missile barge?

Accuracey corrector will guarantee that you at least have two possible hits whether firing with your primary, or firing torpedoes/missiles.

I'm actually looking at running 4 Cutlass Punishers with Accuracy Correctors and TIE MkII mods. AC frees your action up so you can freely boost or take red maneuvers without worrying about having to focusfor offense, and while it's a bit trickier for positioning, a 3 bank followed up by a 1 bank boost in the opposite direction gives you the equivalent of a 5.5 straight's worth of forward motion (yes, I know, it displaces you sideways quite a bit too). Great for getting yourself into a TLT's donut hole. 36 hit points matches BBBBZ as well. I think it's got potential.

Redline (FCS, plasmas, clusters, extra munis, thrusters)

Academy Pilot 12 X 5

[100]

not sure i'll pick it up again though

the next game had a 2 hull rhymer decide he could survive cluster missiles and a range 1 tie shot because that's how dice work <_<

I call it "Storm Fel Rain"

Sooner Fel 35 total

PTL

Auto thrusters

RG

SD

Deathrain 39

EM

AHM

Cooner Net

Advanced Sensers

Tie Mk 2

Zertik Storm 26

Tie/x

AC

Fun for the whole family.

So it seems to me that a Punisher ace sits pretty snugly alongside 3x AC Tempests, and I'm going to try my hand at a list with Redline first up. (Seems a lot of hype is being reserved for Deathrain's potential for shenanigans, but as I'm a bit of a noob I think Redline will probably be the more straightforward and forgiving of the two)

Anyway, getting the exact build I want is just 1 point out of reach (FCS, EM, Plasma Torps, Clusters) so my question is how to tinker that build most optimally? Should I drop FCS and take Munitions failsafe or TIE mk II? Or should I keep the FCS and change out the Plasmas for Flechettes?

I'm quite likely to take this list to my first tournament, I think my other option will be 3x tempests + super Soontir.

Thoughts?

So here's my starting point:

Deathrain (A cutlass pair?)

Extra Munitions

Enhanced scopes (advanced Sensors?)

Captain Oicunn

Determination

Dauntless

Intelligence Agent

Let oicunn charge into the thick of things and tell me when's the right time to drop bombs.
