Rule Questions

By FredBloggs1967, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi. I bought the Core game a few days ago, me and my Wife sat down this weekend to give the game a go. I've found the rules quite hard to understand in places, although it's reasonably straightforward there seem to be a lot of things to remember. I suspect it will all fall into place after a few more games.

A couple of things I couldn't seem to find in the rulebook though, or at least the answer didn't leap out of the page at me.

(1) What happens if you enter a location with a Portal and a monster in, with regard to combat? Do you perform a combat round with the monster before going through the portal, or do you wait till you return?

(2) What happens to the Investigators if all the investigators are in the 'Other Worlds' when the Elder God wakes up? Where do the character models go? Or is this irrelevant due to the barriers between time and space breaking down, and you just enter the combat phase with the Elder God? In our case, as there were only 2 investigators in play, we both went through the portals just before the God woke up.

Cheers.

Hi,

welcome to the forum, and welcome to the maddening worlds of Arkham Horror :)

Indeed, rules can be a little hard to grasp completely on the first try, but with a few more games under our belt, everything will be really smooth. Remember, the key is always following the phases. Go with that, and 99% of your doubts will be clarified. As for your questions:

1) Monsters are dealt with during the Movement Phase (Phase 2), while Gates are dealt with during the Arkham Encounter Phase (Phase 3). Hence, your investigator moves on the location with the gate and the monster, and he has immediately to deal with the monster. After he has dealt with it (by fighting or fleeing), his movement phase ends, and it's another investigator's movement phase OR it's the beginning of Phase 3. Only at this point, the investigator is free to enter the OW (as per rules for Arkham Encounters, gate on the board, no explorer marker for the investigator)

2) Investigators in OW are just summoned back to Arkham to fight the AO. Only investigators who are Lost in Time and Space when the AO wakes up are devoured (hence, not taking part into final battle)

Hope this helps!

Thanks very much. That's cleared those queries up. :D If that's the case, does that mean that when a monster moves to your location in the Mythos round (say, a Byakhee drops on you from the skies), you have to resolve the combat with that monster immediately as part of that mythos round? Or do you wait till the start of the next character movement round, and then have an opportunity to flee or fight it? Sorry about this, this is probably very basic stuff, while I played a fair bit of Call of Cthulhu 25 odd years ago, I haven't played a game of this type before! Thanks for your help. :)

Monsters are always dealt with in movement. Always. He is going to be stuck fighting there unless you can manage to flee it.

Yup, as Mad said, monsters are only dealt with during Movement. If they move in your area during Mythos, you have to wait until movement.

Please note that this is key in coop strategy: the monster moves on Investigator A during Mythos, and it's too tough for that investigator. But during Movement, investigator B goes first, so he may opt to move on investigator A and kill the monster for him.

It's a little tricky to get at the beginning, feel free to ask any questions you may have :)
