Thanks for the nice, thorough report! You mentioned that activation order became tricky with so many ships on the board. Did you feel that the importance of maneuvering was diminished? With so many ships, you're bound to have a shot no matter what you do, so did it feel more like a dice off, or did it still capture the dynamic nature of X-wing's flightpath maneuvering system?
The activation order became tricky because of the rookie way we both deployed our squads, with the named pilot at the front of a V-shape with the generics behind. We soon corrected this during the first couple of turns, but was a bit embarrassing for both of us to begin with!
As for your second question, the board was a target-rich environment so you were nearly always going to have a shot at something. However, because of the cramped conditions in certain areas of the board, focus-firing down particular targets was sometimes problematic, and some targets definitely needed prioritising (for instance, any of my opponent's ships equipped with Assault Missiles, as they would reap a terrible harvest amongst my TIE Fighters and nearby ships). It definitely didn't feel like a dice-off, but the arc-dodging aspect of the game was lacking a bit, but that was understandable with that many ships on the board. The main dodging that took place was caused by the Huge ships, i.e. not getting in their way!
Edited by WhingewoodThat sounded like a really fun game. Did you play it with a friend or family member?
I played it with a friend at our FLGS. The plan for the next Epic game we do is to grab two more people for each team, and each of us use 300pts.
Great battle, I love Epic format in X-wing game.
If you want to play 2 vs 2, try out this - don't share dial info with your friend during game, it will bring funny moments to the game as you need to figure out what's your teammate is going to do ![]()

Good idea! Keeping communication limited to general statements of intent (such as "I am going to attack that squad", etc) would add a bit more fun/realism.

That's kind of funny because originally that was the rule: no showing dials to your teammates, and all communication had to be in the open so the other team could hear, too. There was such an uproar in the community about that, they decided to change the official rules. I think secretly talking to your opponent is great. The advantage to not communicating with your teammate is that one team member doesn't dominate and make all the decisions.
This is neat. I am contemplating buying the Raider and Tantive, but I just don't know if the ships are worth the money. I've never even seen an epic game played.
Most impressive. is their a point cost you would recommend playing Epic at or is 300 just fine???
My brother and I play Epic at 300 pts per side. A game lasts about 2-3 hours, so it's nice for an evening rather that a day. We have been talking about an all-day 1,000 point per side game. . .I'm inspired!
