Brainstorm - Convoy game session (armoured regiment)

By Sebastian Yorke, in Only War

After the last game where the crew of the Emperor's Bagel (yep, that's what they insisted for a Leman Russ' name) fought in a desperate massive battle to save the remnants of an Armoured Fist regiment encircled by an Ork horde, they are now on the run through a desert from an even larger ork horde.

They are in a convoy with ~60 other vehicles, the majority being supply trucks and half-tracks filled with troops from the rescued regiment. There are, however, 9 other Leman Russ with them and around 10 Chimeras too.

Company command has decided to risk the convoy by going into a massive sandstorm in an attempt to outwit the ork horde trying to intercept them. They have chained each of the vehicles in a huge column, with part of the tanks in the front and a larger portion in the back. Players are the third vehicle in the tip of the column

These are the current events I have in mind:

- Ork bikers attack the flanks of the column. The players can only see them (their shadows) in distances <20m.

- Troop vehicle becomes stranded from the column, Company command requests a full stop and require the players to rescue the troopers.

- Lead vehicle falls off a precipice, dragging the second (platoon command) and third (player's) vehicles a couple meters before the chains break up. Players have to cut the chains with a lascutter or else... Later, they have to go down the precipice and try to rescue any survivors.

- Even the potent Russ engines begin to stall in the worst of the storm. Players must choose to become easy targets for the orks or else get out of their vehicles and risk suffocating/being dragged away by the strong winds.

More ideas please!

The column passes into a narrow mountain pass. Ork ambushers are waiting on each side ready to induce a landslide, and the column has to gun it through the pass or get crushed by rocks. Shooting the Orks on the sides before they can set off the trap might give them extra time to make it through.

A couple vehicles in the middle of the chain get knocked out. Players in the back half of the chain have to try to navigate back up and reconnect with the rest of the convoy, the tracks already vanishing in the fierce wind.

One of the tanks runs out of promethium (fuel tanks punctured, hose breaks, etc.) and the whole column grinds to a full stop so they can effect repairs. That is, of course, when the Orks choose to strike...

Game is this night, let's see how it goes!

Summary:
Player's LR engine stalled due to exceptionally horrible atmospheric conditions and they were left behind the convoy momentarily.

In that time they located a huge Ork horde searching for them. After a brief skirmish between the "Emperor's Bagel" and the forward scouts (a buggy managed to hit a rokkit in their rear armor, but just 10 points of hull integrity were lost), they did rendezvous with the convoy and informed the company command.

After that, they went into an approaching sandstorm and were faced with operate tests as to not fall of the column, keep the chains (connecting all vehicles) reasonably intact and blablabla.

We were running out of time so I didn't manage to put any combat while inside the storm (which in a way made sense anyhow).

Being the 3rd vehicle in a ~60 vehicles column, they were suddenly dragged forward by the chain and noticed the 2nd tank in the line was on full reverse (but to no effect, it was still being dragged forward). It was tight but they managed to have the full column stop and even reverse a little pulling the 2nd tank back until they heard one of the huge chains shrieking and breaking - the 1st tank in the column fell in an abyss of which they couldn't yet see the bottom (due to the sandstorm).

The entire column waited for about 1h until they could see the bottom, the LR was upside down smashed and half buried in a rocky formation. One of the players accompanied the Platoon Commander in getting down to the tank.

Using morse code, they managed to communicate with the crew inside - only the driver was alive and badly injured. Without time and risking being caught by the ork advance, they had to abandon the driver who wished them good luck commited suicide with his laspistol.

Hours later, there was no sign of the ork horde and they found a sentinel patrol that led the convoy to the main army camp. Their hearts heavy as they realised they could have saved the fellow guardsman.

The Gunheads Company had lost one more tank, now counting only 8.
