Wave 7 Build Ideas

By Final Draft, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So, I have two ideas for the Punisher's use in this Thursday's League at my local store. Each build has a heavily outfitted "Redline" as its main ship.

Build One (97):
"Redline": Enhanced Scope, Extra Munitions, Adv. Proton Torpedoes, Assault Missiles, Concussion Missiles, Ion Bombs, Proximity Mines, Munitions Fail-safe (51 points)

2x Storm Squadron Pilot: TIE/x1 Title, Fire Control System (23 points each)

So the idea is that Redline is the heavy hitter, having a wide variety of various ranged weapons to tackle various situations. Since his attack value is only two, the idea is to use Extra Munitions and Fail-safe to keep his armaments going for as long as possible or until he's dead. The two Storm pilots would be support. Personally I don't think Adv. Targeting Computer is that great and would rather be able to use my target locks for re-rolls, and be slightly below points to guarantee initiative.

Build Two (100):

"Redline": Enhanced Scope, Extra Munitions, Flechette Torpedoes, Cluster Missiles, Concussion Missiles, Proximity Mines, Munitions Fail-safe (44 points)

2x Royal Guard Pilot: Push the Limit, Royal Guard TIE, TIE Engine Mk. II, Autothrusters (28 points each)

Similar idea as the previous build, with Redline carrying slightly less munitions in favor of having a pair of arc-dodging interceptors as support. Twin Ion Engine Mk. II seemed like a good choice, until I looked at the Interceptor's dial and realized that they'd only benefit marginally from TIE Eng. Mk. II, though at this point I don't wanna sacrifice more munitions from Redline to give them Stealth Device or Targeting Computer, though it might be for the best.

So, opinions~? Also, I love how the Punisher looks. So badass.

Quick question. Why enhanced scopes on redline? I can see how it works on Deathrain as you can drop a bomb on people before the opponent moves but with missiles I general prefer to move later. Fire control system would be more of a benefit on him!

Quick Question: why FCS on Storm squad when AC guarantees both your dice hit

Isn't Munitions Fail Safe a bit too much? With such a massive payload already, maybe you should consider upgrades such as Autothrusters or Mrk. II Engine?

FCS is so essential on Redline. There really is no reason to put anything else on him (although you could build a list around using sensor jammer, but that's a different beast).

Enhanced Scopes is so bad on redline because it does the opposite of what Redline wants: to move last. The later he moves, the easier it is to get arc on your preferred targets, and if you have a range 2-3 missile/torp, you can more easily grab that initial target lock.

Re: TIE advanced system choices. Techinically, you can run any system through the x-1 title and make a useful ship for different reasons. PPL will tell you that the accuracy corrector is the best choice due to its efficiency with 2 attack on the advanced profile. I generally agree with this, although I would like to point out that other systems have their uses:

Sensor Jammer makes the ship even more tanky (more useful on a 'high value' ship however)

enhanced scopes allows the ship to become a good blocker (although not as important in most lists running the advanced)

advanced sensors gives you protection against being blocked or flying through asteroids, but generally is not that valuable on the advanced chassis

FCS: this choice makes a lot of sense if you carry missiles, and does have the advantage of slightly better damage at range 1 compared to accuracy corrector. However, it offers slightly less damage at range 2 or 3, so overall is not as good as acccuracy corrector unless you are using Colzet or Vessery.

advanced target computer: for one extra point, you get guaranteed crits provided you don't spend your TL. This is very powerful and will in fact give you higher damage output than accuracy corrector, but of course costs 1 extra point. You also may feel 'vulnerable' on the turn you are grabbing a target lock because you can't focus/evade. For this reason, I think its better if you are running it on a named advanced with good action economy (Vader or anyone else with Push the Limit + TIE mk 2); or you can also run it on an advanced provided you have more deadly ships in your list (you can pick up target locks without fear because your opponent will be focussing on killing higher value targets first).
