Is X-Wing a great Game?

By devotedknight, in X-Wing

I say yes!

It is quite possibly the best game I have ever seen

Simple to play

Has elements to appeal to Wargamers, Boardgamers and CCGers

Tactical depth

Inexpensive

Well balanced

Fast

High quality prepainted components

I really have to stretch to find anything wrong with it.

Is it perfect, certainly not, no game ever will be, but it does an above average job in every criteria I can think of.

Inexpensive

Yes.
The few complaints we have are of such a nature to indicate that we, collectively, have enjoyed an absurd amount of time and analysis in playing, and that even in the faces of subtle annoyances none of us are willing to quit the game over it :)

I thought I answered this already.

No it's not a great game... It's the only game. The pinnacle of both board and miniature games.

I love the game, though I only get to play maybe once every two to three months because of my schedule. By far, my favorite ship is the bomber, (For some reason? ;) ) I am now breaking out of my comfort zone.

I have some success with the "Decimator's of Doom". Now I'm looking to play some thing new fore the next time I get to play.

I use to play 40k for yrs this game is 10000times better i didn't know games could be so simple and fun

In all my time with X-Wing I've only met one person who doesn't like to play it. They can't explain why and I feel like maybe if they tried a scenario mission with objectives they would prefer that over straight dogfights. I don't push the subject though so I may never know.

Everyone else has played, enjoyed and is willing to play again. I would definitely call it a great game. I have other games people don't care to play for many different reasons (looking at you Star Wars LCG).

Is this even a real question?

Euro gamers hate it because... dice. I have a hard-core batch of Euro players who refuse to even look at it.

However, I think it's pretty okay.

If you love this game, you should check out Heroscape! :D

How can mirrors be real if our eyes aren't real?

I spent so much money on 40k because I loved the background and models, but for the life of me I could never consistently play it or retain any kind of motivation. X wing however benefits from being a mix of a miniatures tabletop game, card game and I dunno..the rules just work very well. It has a nice collectible sense to it as well, I plan on sleeving all my cards.

Power creep is my legitimate fear but otherwise I agree.

Not to turn this into power creep. (There are other places for that). But look at what the first order tie gains between a shield, target lock, and sloop on the dial for 3 points.)

YES!

Check out the thread asking what jobs people who play X-Wing do in their "real" life. You will see that this game is loved by people from all over the world and from many different educational, economic and social backgrounds. And we are all communicating with each other on these forums because of the tremendous community this universe in general and this game in particular have brought together.

For me, anything that can do that is a force for good in the world.

So again, YES!

Plus the models are so much fun to chase my cats with while making Tie sounds and pew pew noises.

Ya 40k has take 10000S just to keep up to date and all ther different ways. rules can be interpreted is nuts this. X wing is. so much simpler but funn fast and easy no more 3 hr games

You're comparing it to a Tie Fighter when you should compare it to an A-Wing, which has the same cost (with Refit) and PS.

Inexpensive

Compared to other wargames x wing is so cheap it isn't funny.

Define Euro-gamers? Is this a board games thing?

I'm a gamer, He's a gamer, Euro gamer, wouldn't you like to be a gamer too?

Eurogames:

  • Player conflict is indirect and usually involves competition over resources or points. Combat is extremely rare.
  • Players are never eliminated from the game (All players are still playing when the game ends.)
  • There is very little randomness or luck. Randomness that is there is mitigated by having the player decide what to do after a random event happens rather than before. Dice are rare, but not unheard of, in a Euro.
  • The Designer of the game is listed on the game's box cover. Though this is not particular to Euros, the Eurogame movement seems to have started this trend. This is why some gamers and designers call this genre of games Designer Games.
  • Much attention is paid to the artwork and components. Plastic and metal are rare, more often pieces are made of wood.
  • Eurogames have a definite theme, however, the theme most often has very little to do with the gameplay. The focus instead is on the mechanics; for example, a game about space may be the same as a game about ancient Rome.

I'm personally not too much of a fan of Eurogames because of the lack of player interaction.

In a word, yes.

you know

those eurogamers are half right...

Part of the reason I enjoy the game is that, unlike 40k, I do not have to buy a codex to play a certain faction. However, one aspect of the game I am not a fan of is that I have to buy ships for factions I have no interest in playing to gain access to certain cards and special rules. So the game does have its benefits, but without having centralized access to rules and requiring official cards to play, it can make the game very much a pay-to-win type of scenario.

Example being that I want to run a list that is comprised of only TIE Interceptors. If the game followed a system like 40k where you have access to all of the rules and then my three Interceptors are no different than anyone elses. But, someone that has more expendable income and is more interested in buying ships from other factions will be at a distinct advantage.

Which list is generally accepted to be better:

Fel - PTL / AT / SD / RGT

Jax - PTL / AT / SD / RGT

RGP - PTL / AT / SD / RGT

Or

Fel - RGT / PTL / SU / TC

Jax - RGT / PTL / SU / TC

Cowall - DD

The first is something that is available to someone that wants to buy multiple ships from another faction, and multiple packages of the Imp Aces; where as the second is available to someone who has only bought the Interceptor and a single package of Imp Aces.

Coming from 40k, I am a believer that if you have the models, you should be able to use all of the rules that they have available.

Euro gamers hate it because... dice. I have a hard-core batch of Euro players who refuse to even look at it.

However, I think it's pretty okay.

I take it they hate Monopoly too. Catan with a more in depth trading mechanic.
