Initial set up: set up off board and fly on to the battle area.

I honestly believe that this would be better for all parties concerned, and it is more realistic. You set up your forces on the edge of the board and just "Fly" them onto the board. When a ship is on the board it can't leave.

opinion?

No, that kills too much of the nuance and strategy in the setup. The game is quite arguably won and lost in the deployment.

No.

Complicates matters unnecessarily. Current method is fine, and if it ain't broke and all that...

This is going to be spectacularly unhelpful, but....

I can't remember all the details now, but a while ago (maybe 6 months?) there was a conversation about some imbalance in the rules. It was a great big thread with lots of people suggesting ideas to fix.... something. I suggested this very thing, and thought it was a good idea. Other people didn't though, and I started a fresh thread to discuss why. I don't remember all the reasons, but someone made a very compelling argument against it and convinced me that it was a bad idea and would break things.

Well then that that. Fair enough. On to the next thread. :-)

I sense hostility, What's the matter did you have a bad day at work? I'm so sorry. Sit down. relax, and have a nice cup of tea.

I think I find it funny that there is no reserves where ships can walk on at a later turn. Perhaps in a mission campaign section.

While I don't agree with the hostility, I think I understand what this user is getting at.

Maybe you could find a way to condense a number of your topics into a single thread? It just comes off a little overbearing to the community when every other thread is started by a single user.

Now I'm sure you're a great person. I only mention this to guard you from becoming one of those users who makes others roll their eyes at their monitors every time they see a new thread or post by you.

So the idea is to set up your forces and fly them onto the board...is that not practically the same as expanding the playing area and setting up your forces? It may be slightly nuanced but if both player's lists/models were hidden from each other and arranged beforehand (to represent dropping out of hyperspace). That reminds me of Stratego with the wall that was used to hide set up, which could lead to some interesting scenario play.

So instead of playing on a 3x3 you want to play on a 3.5x3.5 board?

I don't think this will be popular amongst the 3x3', 100pt tournament diehards but for casual games at home try whatever you like. In my group we tried something like this to simulate fighter escorts, it worked and was great fun. Other things we have tried is the side losing initiative sets up near the middle of the board with the attacking side coming on from a random edge. However this works out we switch roles and repeat just to see the outcome. In reality the opposing sides don't always line up facing each other and the side that gets the drop on another will start with a great advantage.

All great fun but I emphasise probably would not work for a competition.

It would be an uncecessary step. All it would do is add another turn to the begining of the game.

The 4x6ish tables at my FLGS would no longer be able to hold two games. We'd need to end up playing across the long side of the table and my arms aren't long enough for that..

well the question is: is fortressing really an issue? well i know it exists and there was this famous tournament game where they fortressed for a hole hour just killing one tie 2 minutes before the time was up.

but this seemed to be the exception at tournament level. if i am wrong please correct me.

so i dont think there has to be a fix about fortressing
