Rogue Squadron Pet Project Opinions

By Lenik Kyja, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey, guys. I'm still a relatively new player. I haven't had much experience due to the fact that the only people in my area who play this game are myself, and the five or so friends I've gotten into the game along with me. If I want to play with anyone new, I have to drive an hour an a half to find the nearest X-Wing community with merchandise and tournaments. :o One of my most favorite parts of this game is the aspect of customization that the game allows players. Squad building is probably half the fun for me. Since I'm relatively isolated as a player from the community at large, I tend to gravitate toward less orthodox builds since the tournament scene isn't influencing me as strongly. While I do take notes from tournament quality builds, I prefer to experiment and find things that I like. By creating a squad myself, I'm more acquainted with how it operates, so I can focus more on movement and adapting my strategy to deal with my opponent.

So, on to the build. I love X-Wings. They're easily one of the most iconic ships in all of sci-fi and their pilot skills are all phenomenal. One of my favorite Elite Pilot Talents is Opportunist, so when I got Wes Janson, I knew I had struck gold. Here's what I have.

Wes Janson (29)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Wedge Antilles (29)

Opportunist (4)

Luke Skywalker (28)

Opportunist (4)

R2-D2 (4)

Total: 99 points

Strategy:

Wes has VI so that he will almost always shoot first, which is necessary for this build to work. His ability will strip focus or evade tokens (sometimes target locks if I really need to save a ship). He essentially sets up the combo for Wedge and Luke's extra damage.

Next, Wedge fires on the same target, using his skill to reduce its evade by one. I can't stress how valuable this skill is. It allows me to negate the range 3 evade bonus or make large ships have no chance at evasion at all. He then gets an additional attack die from Opportunist, allowing him to attack for either 4 or 5 attack dice. A good roll from Wedge will vaporize a the shields of troublesome Firesprays, Falcons, or the obscenely tanky B-Wing, all of which are pretty prevalent in my play group.

Luke is currently acting as my last resort. With Wes, he is a high skill pilot who gets to throw a lot of attack dice early with Opportunist, potentially neutralizing a threat before it can retaliate. If by chance Wes is destroyed, Luke and R2 really shine as a durable ship. Luke's evasion skills are phenominal, and should damage get through, R2 can recover shields to keep him on the board long enough to pick of any remaining enemy ships, assuming the game isn't going terribly. However, I'm not opposed to switching him out for something different, should anyone make a convincing argument. My only stipulation is that the replacement have the EPT Opportunist to stick with the current synergy with Wes.

Thanks in advance for all the feedback. Aaaaaand discuss.
