URGENT: The Long Awaited FAQ is Nigh (post more questions here).

By Avi_dreader, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi. I was invited to proofread the FAQ and make question suggestions a number of months back, well, I finally got it yesterday and was up to wee hours of the night working on it. Anyways, I'm on page 17 out of 23, and the thought hit me that the other forumites might have some extra questions (since the part of the forum that allowed FAQ questions froze after it got to page 9). I'm going to submit this thing on Sunday night. If you have *any* rules questions that have come up (particularly regarding Kingsport or Innsmouth) that haven't been asked in the FAQ forum, please post them here, I'll look them over, and if they don't actually have an answer, I'll send them along with a list of additional questions. Come to think of it, don't stop posting here after Sunday, even though I'm sending in my copy on Sunday (I'll ask if I can send another questions compilation a few days later, before the final draft of the FAQ is formed). Please post fast :')

-Avi

P.S. I know this came up recently, so, I'll say it, the question about two clues or one dollar, yeah, it's been officially flipped. I don't intend on saying anything else (since I can't copy paste, and I don't want to read through 25 FAQ pages everytime something comes up for the next who knows how long— it's not like I'm getting paid for this project). But anyways, post questions, post!

Don't know which wins, my joy that the FAQ is finally coming or the horror of it having been proof-read by Avi lengua.gif .

::Laughter:: I will see that one of the questions in the end is "Q: Why doesn't Dam own Kingsport yet? A: He makes other Arkham Horror players look like they have high sanity as a stat." ;') Seriously though, so far I have 4 pages of commentary on the FAQ. I still have to read a few more pages of it though. It'll probably end up being more like six or seven pages (and hopefully I'll be able to tag on a few pages of extra questions so we don't have to wait another ten years for an answer).

I had about four pages of commentary too. Many very cool rules, but a couple that are a bit vague (for example, all that it says about Charlie Kane is that he's allowed access to the 11 allies selected for the game).

Here's one that people have wanted to know for a while:

Epic Battle is not used with dual-colored AO cards. The FAQ says this three times. One time it actually says, "those battles are not epic." I wholeheartedly disagree gui%C3%B1o.gif

YES, Kate Winthrop stops a gate burst from removing a seal, and YES, she stops monsters from appearing in Other Worlds. Oh, and yes, every Atlach-Nacha mythos card showing a gate is supposed to move flying monsters.

And while we're on the subject of confirmation: yes, it actually does say, "Erica Carlyle is slumming it." gran_risa.gif

Brian, where are you? We need to form FAQ-Voltron.

Was this ever an issue? We know about all those rich, snooty, b... lengua.gif

P.S. Still hatin' the quote and edit functions.

"Slumming it" has been a running joke with me and my friend.

Um, here are a couple I forgot to mail over:

  • When a Visions of Hypnos card places a clue onto an investigator, can s/he immediately take it?
  • If a clue appears on an investigator who is on a gate, does s/he receive the clue, or does the gate prevent it from even appearing?
  • There's an encounter at the Curiositie Shoppe where you can discard X clues and take as many items from the Common Item deck as you want whose total value is up to X. Can you take items that cost $0? It would seem that you could spend little or no clues and take every Task in the deck.

I also forgot to mention that the FAQ should include the rule that an investigator can immediately take any clues placed onto him/her during the mythos phase.

So long as you're just proofreading, and not trying to bend the rules to your personal whims. I'm not sure I completely trust either of you to be...objective. preocupado.gif

If you cancel Cthulhu's attack, does he still heal?

It's a question from day one of playing this game and I still haven't gotten an official answer.

Secondly, when is an Epic Fight card drawn during the turn? Can palyers still trade items after seeing the new one?

If both the Fail and Pass trigger conditions for a Personal Story are met at the same time, what happens?

If you cancel Cthulhu's attack, does he still heal?

His sheet specifically preceedes the healing text with "AFTER Cthulhu attacks ... "

Do Norman Withers and Lily Chen's Personal Stories count towards Chaugnar-Fagn's limit of having only three doom tokens removed per turn?

Given that it's now technically possible to have 9 and 10 players games, what's the gate limit?

If you cancel Cthulhu's attack, does he still heal????

Stenun said:

Sorry, I have no idea why I typed "gate limit", that's not what I meant at all.

Allow me to rephrase ...

In a nine or ten player game, are you still governed by "the component limit"? i.e. can all 10 Investigators be Blessed at the same time despite there only being 8 Bless cards? What about Brood Tokens? It's technically possible, however unlikely, to use them all up without anyone being devoured ...

Here's another I forgot:
How do you read a "Strange Sightings" or "The Next Act Begins" card? Is it from top to bottom, with the monster movement last, or do you do the monster movement, followed by the special text of the mythos card, as per normal Mythos card order?

Stenun, I have some answers:

  • If you cancel Cthulhu's attack, does he still heal?

No, he does not. This is in the updated FAQ.

  • If both the Fail and Pass trigger conditions for a Personal Story are met at the same time, what happens?

The new FAQ actually says that the pass condition takes precedence, and "timing conflicts always favor the investigators," which isn't necessarily the same thing. I believe Kevin actually said that since this is a timing conflict, the 1st player would decide.

  • If you cancel Cthulhu's attack, does he still heal? His sheet specifically preceedes the healing text with "AFTER Cthulhu attacks ... "

No, healing is part of his attack. HOWEVER: Rex Murphy also takes stamina damage from his curse when using the Dark Pharaoh herald. The "before" term in that particular case is just there to delineate timing, and not to propose a dependent condition.

  • Given that it's now technically possible to have 9 and 10 players games, what's the [components limit]?

This is not an officially supported style of play, so I doubt they'd answer it. But I'd assume though that everyone can be blessed, if you're so lucky. Find another way to mark the extra blessings. After all, the intent with the original components is that everyone can be blessed, have a loan, etc. Extra board expansions should not change that.

  • If you cancel Cthulhu's attack, does he still heal????

Nope.

Apologies if these questions have already been answered...

Does Finn's slippery movement allow him to move before the monsters move, after the monsters move, or does he move simultaneously with the monsters? If he moves simultaneously with the monsters, do stalkers, fliers, and/or aquatic monsters move to the space that Finn is moving *away from* or to the space that he is moving *towards*?

Here's hoping that Finn moves after the monsters move, since it would keep things simple and make his ability more useful.

Do mythos environments trump other effects? For example, if Planetary Alignment is in effect (all Spells have a Sanity cost of 0) and the Mirriam Beecher Blight is also in effect (the Sanity cost of all spells is increased by 1), is the sanity cost of all spells 0 or 1? I'd like to see environments trump other effects, since it's a consistent ruling that's easy to remember.

Are stages of a task completed during the Encounters Phase or the Upkeep Phase? I've seen some people say that it happens during the Upkeep Phase, but I don't know if this is official.

If a miscellaneous game effect (like an encounter) allows a player to immediately close a gate, can he proceed to seal it if he has enough clue tokens? If it depends on the circumstances, what are the circumstances that it depends on?

Thanks!

Tibs, are you proofing and asking questions too? Do you want to send yours separately or do you want me to send them along?

Hmmm... I always assumed that the clue wouldn't appear because the rule sounds fairly explicit (clues do not appear on locations with gates). But with the "rule that an investigator can immediately take any clues placed onto him/her during the mythos phase" this should probably also be made explicit.

An Epic Battle card is drawn right after the upkeep (thanks for asking btw, I didn't know). It's actually in the Kingsport manual.

I don't know for the second question, I'll ask it. Actually this is fairly important (I need to go through all the personal stories). There aren't alot of Innsmouth answers given. If you have any Innsmouth questions ANYONE, please post them.

It's not possible to have 9-10 player games (unless you play with custom rules). Reduced investigator number is only for counting outskirts, gates, and monster limit. It doesn't effect final battle count, or the number of players who can actually enter a game. A player and an investigator are not the same things.

Tasks encounter, missions upkeep. It's in the Dunwich manual, pg 5.

I'm going to forward all your other questions though. Except for the one about gate closing. The answer is no. The gate is closed, you can't seal it (it's in the FAQ).

Thanks for the update. You might want to check out this thread, if you haven't already. Tibs makes the case for Task stages occurring during Upkeep (to my surprise).

And I'll still make the case. The rules don't actually clearly state that Tasks are completed during the encounter phase -- actually, the example contradicts the blanket statement about "merely having en encounter." I think that's a good question to send off.

Yeah... I see, the ambiguity comes from the example... FFG manuals... So... F... F... Fun ;')

Two questions that followed me for quite some time:

1) Patrice is said to gain 5 clue tokens when the Doom Track reaches 9. Is that ment to work only once per game? Since Elder Signs can set back die doom track, it technically would be no problem to have it hit the 9 twice.

2) To prevent Rifts from opening, the Investigators need to have encounters in Kingsport. But, do location-special-abillitys count as well for that purpose, even though their text usually reads "Instead of an encounter (...)"? For example, could you visit the Congregational Hospital for healing and remove a rift token, too?

Thanks for asking that, you've reminded me of a similar question I should have asked!

Does she gain five clues if Cthulhu heals the ninth spot on his doom track?

The answer to both is no. In the new FAQ, it says the Patrice only gains 5 clues the first time. However, it does say that if the doom track drops below half after Martial Law is declared, then it is revoked until the doom track is back up to half.

Why don't you alone send all these questions along. This should be a thread where we forumites gather together all the last-second rules we want answered; we shouldn't put the FAQ writers through the pain of both sifting through multiple emails and sifting through this thread. It's already at page 2.

If Ursula Downs starts on an unstable location, does she pick up the clue?

If Marie Lambeau completes her story, may she use both uses of her Witch Blood ability on the same turn, or must they be used in different turns?

Can you please clarify if investigators count as being in the same area during final combat for purposes of effects such as: Vincent/Carolyn's ability, Minh's ability, the Paranoia madness card, etc.?

What exactly happens when a Rift would move into a vortex? (Using Kingsport and Innsmouth together, for example)

Can investigators use their abilities when Lost in Time and Space? Leo and Mandy, for example.

Can the Deputy of Arkham be arrested?

If the Ancient One awkens via some method other than the doom track, does Diana Stanley heal her sanity/stamina before final combat, as the AO's doom track is filled?

Are there circumstances other than the No One Can Help You Now environment card that Akachi's ability to always seal gates applies to? Maybe the tome De Vermiis Mysteris?

I just want to emphasize that we need a general rule about when investigators are permitted to take clue tokens from the board (or when clue tokens are placed on their current locations) - rather than a series of separate rulings for the examples we're mentioning (since we may not mention all the possible scenarios). That is, are their only specific phases when you're allowed to take clues, or do you just take a clue whenever you end a phase with one in your location, or what . . . ?

I want a blanket rule that will cover the questions about Hypnos, people on gates, Ursula's starting ability, encounters that move you to a location with clues on them, etc. I'm just worried we'll get a FAQ that addresses some of these situations but not others, and will do so without providing any rules that we can apply to figure out the specific cases not mentioned.

oh wow, great news! Finally (thanks to coltsfan for saving it!) all the effort I spent on the old forums pre Kingsport will bear some fruit! Cool!

Now Im sitting here wracking my memory for new ones and of course cant find any...

Actually, all of those questions have been answered in the new FAQ except for the one about Hypnos. Don't expect a general rule though. If FFG were good at making general rules, we wouldn't need an FAQ so desperately ;') The encounter movement has a ruling given (but I want to make sure that FFG is 100% sure that's what they mean this time, since the FAQ seems rushed, even though it does answer many of the questions I've been looking forward to answers to for a long time). Ursula gets the clue on the location she starts on. I'm going to ask about whether Luke gets one for starting in The Dreamlands. Oh. And the people on gate question hasn't been answered yet (personally I doubt they get the clues, but it will be asked).

I'll ask all these questions. Although I'm a little hesitant about asking the LITAS question. Is there any reason to think abilities won't work while an investigator is LITAS?
