Touching

By Smuggler, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I just run in to this situation in a game:
Ship A and B have overlappend and are "touching". Ship A moves away, but collides with ship C resulting in ship A moving back to it's starting position.

Are ship A and B still "touching"? Note that I'm talking about the game term "touching", not if they are physicaly adjecent.

I know this has been discused before, but I can't find it. The FAQ has a few entrys for thouching, but none that seems to fint the situation above.

The ship is still considered touching. FAQ pg.5 "Touching and stationary maneuvers"

Doh, I got hung up on the stationary maneuver part (and the ship was not executing a stationary maneuver) so I missed this "(or executes a maneuver that does not move the ship away)".

Thanks!

Here's my sort of standard explanation:

There is one and only one way to enter the "touching" state. To avoid confusion, however, I'm going to call it [greeblezork] instead of "touching".

If Ship A executes a maneuver that would cause its base to physically overlap Ship B's base, then you move Ship A back along its template until you find a spot it can land in, and you place Ship A in a position where it is touching Ship B. The two ships are now considered [greeblezork], and as a result neither one can attack the other. The two ships then remain [greeblezork] until their bases are no longer touching--meaning either A or B executes a maneuver or performs an action that results in the ships' bases breaking contact.

You can only become [greeblezork] as a result of overlapping while attempting to execute a maneuver, however. It's not common, but if you manage to end up in a position where you're touching another ship without overlapping, you aren't [greeblezork], and your ship (and the ship you're touching) behave normally.

Here, since you're already [greeblezork] from a previous collision, you stay [greeblezork] until you execute a maneuver (or action) that results in Ship A no longer touching Ship B (touching in a physical sense). Since Ship A wasn't able to move away due to Ship C, leaving A's base touching B, Ships A and B are still [greeblezork].

Once upon a time I would have said that A and C are no longer 'touching' in the rules sense. Since that time the FAQ has been altered such that get blocked all the way back to your starting position is the same as performing a stop maneuver which maintains a 'touching' condition.
