Do critical hits only count after the shields are gone?

Do critical hits only count after the shields are gone?

Or can you get critical hits even if you have shields left after taking hits?

You can get a single critical hit every time you roll a at least one Critical in a die pool.

Its just that the "Standard" Critical only really 'counts' when you don't have shields, because that's really the only time you're being dealt damage cards.

If you have an Upgrade with a different critical effect, all you need to do is roll said critical, on the correct colour die if required.

Advanced Homing missiles ignore shields. Roll attack die, if the attack hits, cancel all die results and deal 1 face up damage card.

Well. . . No. Critical hits happen no matter what. All you need is a critical die symbol.

Now your question likely pretains to the critical effect. Depending on which one you choose it will vary.

For instance the standard critical effect only occurs when you deal a damage card. So in the case of Luke Skywalker's squadron, there can indeed be shields up.

Now for cards like Assault Concussion Missiles, that effect occurs as long as you have the black die critical symbol and choose to use it.

DWRR:

One thing your otherwise thorough explanation didn't clarify, is.

What happens in a situation, I.e. where defender has one shield in a hull zone, and gets hit by one damage and one critical in that same hull zone. Which of the two hits gets absorbed by the shield, and which gets to deal a damage card.

Obviously the defender would prefer to get a Damage card face down than face up. So how do you decide which way to go?

That isn't how dealing damage in this game works.

After you finish rolling if you have a critical hit showing you can trigger any critical effect you have access to. From there you total the number of hit and crit icons showing, take into account any modifiers, and then deal that amount of damage.

Critical and Damage Icons all deal damage. As long as your attack pool still has a critical icon after defense tokens are spent, you get to activate an associated critical effect.

The dice you roll don't disappear unless they are spent or removed through Evade defense tokens.

Can you get more than one critical hit from one attack?

No. Only a single critical effect may be chosen per attack

If you read everything and follow the steps of the attack sequence you will see that your situation is fully explained.

Hey fellow Kiwi

The key thing to remember here is that a hit means 1 damage, whereas a crit means 1 damage PLUS the ability to resolve a critical effect at the end of the attack.

You can only resolve one effect regardless of how many crit facing you roll.

So in your example with a hit and a crit and 1 shield on the facing, the result is 2 damage total, plus a critical effect can be triggered.

The first damage would go to the shield, the second damage would go to the hull, and the default critical effect (if chosesn) would be that the damage card for that first hull would be dealt face up.

If an alternate critical effect was chosen (from an upgrade card) its effect would take place here instead and the card would be dealt face down as a regular damage card.

Hope that helps to clarify it :)
