What do you do for a "day job?"

By Plainsman, in X-Wing

I'm an astronomer for a museum.

Mostly means I spend my days sitting in a planetarium reading books and comics.

But I'm also a writer that's had the pleasure of having some minor stuff published on the tiniest of scales. Been slowly working on a novel, the snippets of which have mostly garnered responses of "WHERE'S THE REST?!" that's making me get my hopes up higher than they probably should.

Former federal DHS, now an administrator in a state agency...

Nice, dude :) And likewise. In the process of writing a sci-fi novel. Slow process, but makes me happy and frustrated at the same time haha. Good luck with yours :)

I could try to make it sound fancier than it is, going on about how I work in Logistics and all the various things I've done in my time there or I can just call it what it is.

Target Flow Team Member.

Nice. Former Flow Team Leader myself. Non-Target people probably laugh at the use of "flow" for logistics but I feel your pain, literally. Unloading 2000 cases in 45min is not easy.

Dude, corporate America loves the word flow. It's huge for our manufacturing floor (aerospace) and our whole company has to do all the training related to it, even if it doesn't apply to my job at all haha.

Development Underwriter.

Interesting how many martial artists there are - I have my black belt grading in October!

Software Development Engineer in Test -- I write computer programs that test other computer programs.

Watch commander for the fire service, with a handyman business on the side.

To the paramedic; we're always glad to see you guys!

In this case, does "flow"basically refer to efficiency? Because in sport/performance psychology, flow is a theoretical concept virtually meaning being "in the zone."

Assistent principal at a school

Former naval officer

two college degrees and a university degree. From naval academy to university i must have at least 10 years of higher education.

Process (Chemical) Engineer working for contract engineering firm. I have worked in pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, explosives, oil, and chemical facilities. Between engineering employment, I have also taught middle school, high school, and college science and math courses.

In this case Flow refers to the flow of product from where the store receives it to where it needs to go.

In a basic sense, I am the guy that stocks aisles full of product. In our store we have dedicated areas for stockers. I used to work in Toys (which included the board game aisles). It can be a pretty heavy workload in the Winter season in Toys alone.

KTreu42's got it on mine, it's all about production efficiency.

I'm a video game developer. I do games all day, everyday.

I build real spaceships during the day and play with plastic ones at night. It's a good life.

Yeah what Groggy said. With Target the "Flow" team facilitates the "flow" of product in the back door from the truck, to the sales floor and out the front door in the customer's shopping carts and then restocking as needed in an endless loop.

Groggy you ain't kidding about the Toy area. We used to use the "Biggs" strategy. Several of us would go in there at the same time with one person drawing enemy fire (read as answering customer questions) while the rest of us would focus fire down the Target (read as stock an aisle at a time).

Myself: Head of department of Virology and Molecular Biology and 3D animator

Interesting. How does the latter go with the rest of your job?

Conerning 3d animations: Working as a freelancer during my spare time (around 10 hourse per week effort)

When you first hired on with Target, did they make you watch that BS anti-union propaganda video? That video cracks me up! So transparent.

Felt bad for the almost 18,000 people who lost their jobs, but I sure wasn't hurt to see those 133 Canadian Targets go under.

For the next few months, I'm a history professor who freelance writes on the side; RPG/wargaming stuff (primarily Shadowrun, though my first real video game project, Satellite Reign, just launched this week, which was awesome), with some stand-alone Shadowrun fiction (a novella and a novel, the latter of which launched at GenCon), and a scattering of other RPG projects on the side.

After this semester, I'll instead be a full-time writer, focusing on novels (while still doing a scattering of other RPG projects on the side ;) ), particularly in the Shadowrun and BattleTech universes.

I am a retail operative in a little store called Primark...yeah. I am in a bad spot in my life. I have a degree in game design sitting on my wall...doing absolutely NOTHING! :P

I need to get out of retail and into a real job.

Yep. pallets full of product in the double digits in the busier December weeks... per day. I'm over in Home Improvement now but we all help each other's areas regularly so I still see some time stocking the board game aisles (my favorite part of the store).

I'm pretty sure every non-unionized business has an anti-union video. I don't even recall what was in ours but I remember the one from my previous job.

Gersun, where did you move to? Are you of Chinese ethnicity btw? =) How's it over there?
