What do you do for a "day job?"

By Plainsman, in X-Wing

An optometrist. I can fire up Vassal inbetween patients, but can really only play against myself, since a real opponent would be waiting long stretches of time between turns while I do exams :)

I work for a Daily Fantasy Sports website. My job is to look at sports statistics and create tools that help people pick the best fantasy teams for that day. I'd wager there isn't too much crossover between the sports nerds and the Star Wars nerds, but I could be wrong :)

You're wrong. My fantasy draft is this weekend!

Mechanical Engineer, in R&D

Working at a scrap yard for cars, selling second hand spare parts. I've also got an internship as software engineer/programmer/whateverit'scalled which is what I ACTUALLY want to do.

Wow. The diversity here is amazing.

Me - Program / Project / Product Manager in industrial electronics. I wear lots of hats.

In the past I actually worked for Lucasfilm / THX for a while. I was a Theater Alignment Program (TAP) evaluator for THX and would get paid to sneak into movies at theaters who had a contract with Lucasfilm and report back on their projection, sound, and theater quality.

I'm a software engiblargh.

I'm a Fraud Quality Assurance Manager for a major Canadian bank located in Montreal

Paramedic. Probably the only one on this forum.

Also, off topic?

Not the only one!! I am a Firefighter / Paramedic, on the plus side I have gotten a couple of coworkers in to the game so, at night during our down time we play a couple of game!!!

Super secret Ninja squirrel. Dang, now I have to kill all of you.

Oh, yeah, like I'm supposed to believe you can track me down over the internet, sneak into my house, and oiegtbvsssssssssssssssh

I'm a PhD student in biomedical engineering.

A disturbingly large portion of my stipend goes toward buying tiny plastic spaceships...

I'm a college instructor teaching International Studies.

Arborist.

I had to google that; cool.

I'm an archaeologist.

Cheers

Worked several years as an archaeologist, the lady of the house is an archaeologist too.

Currently working as what translates into English as a Heritage Consultant for Archaeology :)

(meaning evaluating possible sites, visit excavations, reading reports, and such)

Fun side: meeting many friendly archaeologists who, despite low pay, have a passion for their job :)

Down side: finance

That down side is why I didn't go into archaeology. Fortunately, I'm friends with some of the archaeologists here, and every once in awhile someone throws me a cartography project that relates to archaeology.

To be clear and honest, it is not my own finance I complain about.

An important effect of the (originally European) law is those who want to build have to pay for the archaeological research and excavation. This can be very expensive, even considered the low pay of field-archaeologists themselves. As a consequence talks with developers can turn out rather unpleasant as they realise they are in for the big bucks.

I'm a commercial helicopter pilot in Western Canada.

I mostly do firefighting and wildlife work including aerial netgunning and darting. Was just doing a fish survey where I was basically payed to heli fish for a week. :D

Propulsion Test Technician for Aerojet Rocketdyne

I test-fire electrical propulsion engines used on spacecraft and measure their performance. It's pretty tight.

Digging for a commercial archaeology firm certainly isn't the way to become rich. But some jobs in life are worth being (comparatively) poor for.

GIS, one of the few archaeological endeavours that you can make money in.

That and being a tomb robber like old Fat Han himself.
