HoB 2 player rules

By MDR, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello all.

Nearly at the end of a very enjoyable playthrough of the Heirs of Blood campaign. As there were only two of us heroes, we used the special rules for this detailed in the book, which seemed to help the balance a great deal (can only imagine we'd have been massacred by the OL without them given how close most of the quests have been). For future reference, should this be applied to all 2 hero campaigns, or is it specifically for HoB? RAW seems to suggest the latter but I can't work out why that would be the case.

Thanks

Hi there,

These special rules are intended for Heirs of Blood exclusively. So you cannot officially port them to any other campaign, unless of course you and your playgroup agree to do so, which would make it a house rule. I don't know if these rules can help balancing out 2-players games in other campaigns than HoB. It may be that it does, so I´d encourage you to try them out and let us know. After all 2-heroes games are quite broken in this game. But you can't use these rules officially in any other campaign.

Note that I champion the use of 4-heroes in a game with 3 players. You should really play two heroes per hero player whenever you can. It's not only the fact it's more balanced, but it's also the variety in your actions is huge in comparison. It makes up for richer game experience. Two heroes is a bit dull in my opinion.

Imo 2 hero games are broken with RAW, so you might as well modify them as you wish.

However 2 hero games are kind of uninteresting for the OL as well (very few monsters, no mastermonsters in big monstergroups), so I wouldn't recommend this style of gaming anyway.

If you play 1vs1 I would at least play with 3 heroes. Managing 4 heroes alone (while it is the most balanced way to play) is quite hard, when you don't know this game inside out. Even after ~3 campaigns I would say that controlling 4 heroes alone is much harder than playing the OL side, because there are more things you have to keep in mind.

So: Don't play with 2 heroes (especially not after your first campaign).

4 heroes is the most fun way to play. Even if you play 1v1, 4 hero-games are imo the most enjoyable (and unproblematic when you play 1v2), but don't go this route if you or your fellow gamer is easily turned off by losing/winning streaks, because this can happen rather easily if someone controlls 4 heroes alone.

In any other case play at least with 3 heroes. Even if you play alone and fear that you might forget a few things that's not so problematic in a 3 hero game, because playing with 3 heroes is a little bit balanced towards the heroes (or at least that's the popular opinion in the community).

Thanks for your replies. 2 heroes actually worked out pretty well for HoB but think I'll take on board your suggestion and encourage the guys to take 2 characters each (I'm playing OL this time) when we start the new campaign
