Interaction between Esege and Garven

By Dr Zoidberg, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Ok, so after running a list last night that had Esege with Recon Specialist acting as a Focus 'bank' for the rest of the squadron, I got thinking about how he would interact with Garven's ability.

Esege reads:

"When another friendly ship at Range 1-2 is attacking, it may treat your focus tokens as its own."

And Garven:

"After spending a focus token, you may place that token on any other friendly ship at Range 1-2 (instead of discarding it)."

Now the key here (I think) is the wording of Esege's ability "it may treat your focus tokens as its own."

So what I'm thinking here, is that Garven could use one of Esege's focus tokens when he attacks, and then give it back to Esege or another squad mate, as he doesn't spend Esege's token, he gets to treat it as his own. In effect Esege is giving him a token, which he can then use his own ability to pass on.

Am I making sense with this? What do people think?

It works exactly as you think, and it is glorious.

Yep, it's correct.

Pair them with other focus related pilots or upgrades and you have a nice Focus Festival

Then Carnor comes in and he changes the tempo.

Carnor comes in, and he changes the song

Why are you bringing me down, man?

Why are you bringing me dowwwwn

There's always one who has to come and spoil the party.... :P

This is why we can't have nice things...

You could always throw in "Dutch", the other original member of the Devil Dogs. But then Kagi swoops in and screws that up, too. In fact, I think we know who would win the Battle of the Bands.

Don't forget Dark Curse. For the Empire!

Still, both Dark Curse and Carnon do not prevent from launching Proton Rockets, Ion Pulse Missiles and other ordnance that do not require to spend your Focus/TL but just need you to have it.

If carnor is at range one of garven, but range two of edge can you still spend eseges focus?

I paired Esege with Miranda this evening , esege had recon specialst, miranda had jan ors so i coud convert some of those focus tokens into evades if needed.

Even though the tokens reside on the ship at range 2 from Carnor, it would still be the ship at range 1 of Carnor that is trying to spend the tokens, so no.

Now, if the positions were reversed and Esege somehow got a focus token while at range 1 of Carnor, someone else not at range 1 of Carnor could spend them.
