Are Tie-Bomber viable?

By devotedknight, in X-Wing

I keep trying to make Tie Bombers work, I can't seem to be successful. So are they Viable?

yes

Yes, and getting better with every wave released.

Four bombers with proximity mines and a Doomshuttle was a thing at one point but verrrrry hard to fly and maybe not viable now with all the hyper-mobile large base ships running around. Lots of sweet new ordnance just dropped (no pun intended) with Wave 7 though so maybe there's hope. Or maybe they're just a worse, if cheaper, Punisher...

Can't fit thirteen bombs in a list without a Scimitar.

Didn't even know THAT was a thing....sho 'nuff.

meine gott...ja, Ja, JA!!

And with that, I need a couple more Punishers.

If quad TLT builds take over, yes. I imagine getting Y-Wings in arc even with the sh*tty bomber dial is easy.

From personal experience...

Yes, Bombers have little trouble lining up Y-Wings.

And a nice salvo of ordnance will probably mean you're removing Ys from the board before Bombers fall to the TLTs. Two agility and six health isn't a combination that's super easy for TLTs to rip through.

I would like to point out that a 5 gamma mini swarm with Ion mk II is a beast of a list.

Or if you want you can run 5 scimis and add in howlrunner for 98 for bid. and run your swarm like normal. you lose a tie and a green die per ship, but gain 12 hull in response.

Honestly a good trade off IMHO

Personally have been enjoying proxying Extra Munitions to run 2 Scimitars with EM, 1x Cluster Missiles and Seismic 1x Charges with Soontir Fel + PtL + AT + RGT + Stealth and Backstabber. 99 points of awesomeness.

For 100 point games, I find it hard to try and cram a TIE bomber into my list (I'm still learning to fly the Empire), when there are other options open.

For epic, yes they are totally viable. Load that puppy up, throw Deadeye on it(from the A-wing expansion), give it an escort, and your good to go.

I've been doing pretty well with the following list:

2x Scimitar Squadron Pilot + Cluster Missiles + Flechette Torpedoes + Seismic Charges + Munitions Failsafe
4x Academy Pilot

I will re-evaluate it once I pick up my two pre-ordered Punishers on Monday. My current thoughts are to continue using the Scimitars, but then with a slightly different load-out with some of the new options.

With Extra Munitions, you could drop the Failsafes and the Flechette Torpedoes. Double Clusters and Seismics are better, Failsafe is useless only for Clusters, and you'll even free up a couple points to spend... somewhere? Or go for a bid.

I'm gonna try a 4 bomber list and try to work in extra munitions and prox mines and cluster missiles.. see what fun I can have..

conner's exist now, guys

start bombing!

The TIE Bomber:

  1. Has the best survivability-to-cost quotient in the game
  2. Is the cheapest vector for Torpedoes in the game
  3. Is the cheapest vector for Bombs in the game
  4. Is the cheapest vector for Missiles for the Empire
  5. Is the cheapest vector for Extra Munitions (as in has more than just the Torpedo slot)
  6. Includes Captain Jonus

...Yeah, it's pretty danged viable.

Arc dodging Fat Turrets aren't so mobile when you have a couple bombers packing Ion Pulse Missiles. Before Expanded Munitions so you were paying too much for an ordnance platform with not enough good shots, but you can have a Scimitar Squadron Pilot with EM, a damage warhead, and a control warhead or a bomb for around 25 points, and 2 uses of each. Ion Pulse Missiles and Flechette Torpedoes are not really a damage drop from the Bomber's primary weapons anyway, so you're not giving up good shots for a control effect.

It was good before Wave 7: a solid frame and passable dial without any upgrades for a mere 16 points (same as a naked HWK), and a bunch together with Proximity Mines (19 points each, less than a K fighter) could annihilate a Firespray in one Activation Phase.

With Extra Munitions, they make ordnance worth it. They're difficult both to build and fly, but as a ship based around ordnance they can fill pretty much any type of damage or debuff role you want. B-wings? Plasma Torpedoes. Swarms? Assault Missiles? Interceptors? Conner Nets. Fat Falcons? Proximity Mines and Cluster Mines. Regenerating Supercorran? Advanced Homing Missiles.

The trick is to budget yourself well and give them a loadout that supports the rest of the squad. If you're going for overload you're better off with the bigger bomber.

As the others have said: the TIE Bomber is great. And for the reasons they have said.

I will through in the caveat that ordnance is generally situational, and so you will want to load out a couple different types.

The good news is that Extra Munitions now exists, so you can get a bit more bang for your points.

Say: one ship with Plasma Torpedoes in case you run into B-Wings, and another with Assault missiles, in case you run into a swarm.

Jonus /w Hull and Determination

3x Scimitars with 26 points of bombs/torps/missiles spread between them.

Sally forth!

Sally forth!

Or Naked Jonus, with 3x Scimitar with Extra Munitions and 2x Cluster Missiles a-piece.

4 rounds of 6 jonus'd attacks! That's damage, folks

I've used the above list myself, a lot of fun. If your opponent targets Jonus it means more time for the Scimitars to fire away.

I'm looking forward to trying

Scimitar + Seismic X4
Cutlass + TIE engine mk 2 + Extra munitions + Seismic + Ion

bobomb!
