300 points just isn't enough for Epic

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

I just can't do it. I can't build an Epic squad that works with only 300 points to spend. It certainly doesn't FEEL epic anyhow, because a loaded raider takes up almost half of my points. So then I'm left with about 160 points... which after adding a Decimator, (Because it looks beautiful next to a Raider)and Palpy riding shotgun on it, I have very close to the original 100 points for a standard list.

What I want to have, is several TIE fighters, 2 Interceptors, at least 1 Punisher, accompanied by a few baby Bombers too! Basically I want 1 or 2 of everything I own, on the darned matt! The only way I can get CLOSE to doing that with 300 points is go with no upgrades and leave my Raider on the bookshelf... And who wants to play Epic without Huge Ships?!?!?

500 points should be the new, "Super Epic". The gorgeous, thematic battle that you just want to take pictures of!

How to field a lot of ships at 300 points:

1.) Don't waste points on an epic ship.

2. 8 TIE Fighters, 4 Bombers, 2 Defenders, and Vader.

500 points would just get stupid. Someone will decide to run this list:

Binayre Pirates x12
Cartel Spacer x12
Syndicate Thug x10

That's 492 points, leaving you with 8 points to put upgrades on something. 34 ships is just completely obnoxious. The game will turn into a complete traffic jam, and hours will be spent trying to move everything. It wouldn't be fun.

Even at 300 points, you can run:

Binayre Pirates x12
Cartel Spacer x11

I've run against it. It's not fun. 23 ship swarms are just stupid.

Is someone stopping you from playing 500 points? You can't find someone else who wants to play 500 points?

He wants to put the Raider on the table, and right so! I will play a 400 epic tomorrow, for me that's the lowest you should go with epic. Unless you play a tournament you will know the folks on the other side, so there will probably be another huge ship. If not (and you want to avoid those stupid swarms - which are only effective because FFG missed to nerf them for epic) then make it mandatory for every side to field at least 2 or 3 epic points.

If you run anything above 300, you need to demand that each side field a Huge ship.

Hows about 350? Still puts a limit on your spending, but leaves you with a cool 200 to play with, after you've shelled out for your big beauty...

I normal do 400pt but we include are big stuff because it makes mores sense to me

If you run anything above 300, you need to demand that each side field a Huge ship.

And up the epic point total to 6 or 8. 2 raiders and a gozanti vs 3 transports.

Anything more than 400 gets stupidly crowded. The game resembles a parking lot more than a battle.

Then play on biger table i play on 6 by 4 is what i use for epic maybe there should be more large ships i think of epic as a fleet fighting

It certainly doesn't FEEL epic anyhow, because a loaded raider takes up almost half of my points.

You're overloading it.

If you really feel like you need more points, maybe make all huge ship upgrades for CR90s or Raider Corvs free. There's still some major decision making for its loadout.

400 if each team fields at least 1 huge ship. It feels Epic and is a lot of fun.

Tem epic is much better for gettinbng big battle. You can kit out an epic ship to an appropriate extend and the points you have left over and your prtner's own list can provide sufficient escort.

The official rules for epic team are 2 200 point sets per side. There is your 400 point game.

I think the traffic jam problem only happens because people tend to play the same way they play 100-point games where focus fire is key. It would be nice if FFG released Armada-style objectives in a cinematic/epic pack so that players have reasons to split forces, run diversions, etc.

that's when you play armada

Edit: also I agree team epic is better because flying one of the epic ships is tough and very different from the smaller ships so being able to focus on that alone while your partner flies cover

It adds to the experience lol and makes it more fun

Here's how you do it: Find a mate, ask if he wants to play a 500pts game using Epic rules, if the answear is yes, play :)

Epic as it stands is basically broken. You should get about 150 points of Huge ship for free, for starters (as they are more a liability than anything else, especially if the other side doesn't have one), and both sides should have to field one.

If you don't overload the Epic (30 points of upgrades is a good upper limit) and go with two hardpoints rather than three (customisation over maximisation) then you have a good 170ish support force. Last Epic I played I had both Huges at decent loadouts, three elite X-wings and two generic Y-wings. Before that was a 135ish Raider, the Emperor's Lambda and a full squadron of four elite TIE advanced (fully kitted out Vader, VI Alozen, PTL TIEmk2 Maarek and Colzet, all ATC)

Epics are much more powerful with the new rules, especially their awesome primaries, but you don't want to max them out.

I'm going to be playing an epic game this weekend, 800pts on each side, both sides using a huge ship (Imperial Raider vs Corvette). It's going to take all day to finish but I get to use nearly all of my Empire ships so I don't care! Also, really looking forward to using the Raider and not just having it as a display piece.

The term broken assumes it was fixed in the first place and then something came along to mess it up

Epic format has never received that much attention from FFG

I think Epic would benefit greatly from different parameters. In my opinion each side should have to field an epic ship (otherwise it´s just an oversized X-wing game). Scum could field a transport (smuggling craft) or whatever. I also think there should be a limit on total number of ships you can field. If you want to play an 8-tie swarm, fine, but you might only be able to field a fully kitted devestator to fill the list. In that case I guess my idea would be a 10 ship limit for 300 points (including the Raider). The possibility of fielding 20 cheap ships and automatically steamroll a fleet including an epic ship kills the concept of the epic game for me. I think one of the reasons X-wing has become so popular is because it lends itself really nicely to competitive play (everyone is flying casual of course:). If Epic is to take off it needs a functional competitive format, although most games will remain casual of course. The idea of competitive list making and meta-game evolution is a great driving force in X-wing, epic needs that to be worthwile.

I'm pretty confident that once scum gets some epic ships that FFG will either require you to have a certain number (3 comes to mind) or separate the point pool.
