Where do I blow up?

By BlechCola, in X-Wing Rules Questions

An interesting one came up in a game recently. I had a scum z95 with dead man switch on it. I had 1 hull left and the crit that states if I perform a manoeuvre that causes me to overlap an obstacle or another ship then I take a damage, so doing this would see my ship dead and blowing up doing splash damage to anyone at range 1 of it.

I was right next to a decimator so did a hard 3 move to end up overlapped with the far corner of it. My figuring was at the point I am overlapping (before I have to move my ship back to where it can actually fit) I should take the damage which would see me dead and the dead man switch trigger, which would have caused damage to 3 opponent's ships. My opponent thought that I would have to finish my move with me no longer overlapping his ship before taking the damage and triggering the dead man switch which would only see me causing damage to the decimator. We went with his thoughts but I'm curious what others think.

Thrust control fire (the crit in question) says you take the damage "After you execute a maneuver that..." that means you complete the maneuver and any associated repositionings and once you are done THEN you take the damage and blow up.

It's actually the stunned pilot crit but other than that forgottenlore is spot on

You'll have to complete your maneuver and 'blow up' once your ship is where it would end up.

If you perform a 5 forward and clip a rock right away you don't blow up until you end your maneuver. If you overlap another ship you have to "back off" it before you blow up. There are no intermediate position for you to stop and blow up in.

It's actually the stunned pilot crit

Ack!!!

I even looked it up. I was sure I had the name right.

The notion of using a crit offensively makes me smile.

thanks for the feedback.
