Keyan Farlander + opportunist timing question

By Herowannabe, in X-Wing Rules Questions

just had an interesting situation crop up.

Kenyan Farlander says "when attacking, you may remove 1 stress token to change all of your <eye> results to <hit> results."

Opportunist says, "when attacking, if the defender does not have any focus or evade tokens. You may receive 1 stress token to roll 1 additional attack die. You cannot use this ability if you have any stress tokens."

So the obvious synergy is that you use opportunist, get a stress, roll your attack, use Keyan to remove the stress and change your <eye>s to <hit>s. All well and good.

But does it work the other way?

For example, the situation was that Keyan was stressed attacking another ship. Could he use his ability first to clear the stress, and then use opportunist to get the extra die?

As for the timing, both cards only say "when attacking..." Which actually covers a broad range of steps. Can you trigger Keyan's ability before rolling? Or can you use opportunist after the dice have been rolled?

You can't use Opportunist after the dice have been rolled. Opportunist falls at the beginning of Step 2 of the attack sequence, and Keyan's ability comes during Step 3--so the combo only works in the "forward" direction.

Opportunist happens during the "Roll Dice" step

Farlander's ability happens during the "Modify Dice" step.

Id say gaining stress from opportunist to then trigger his ability would work, but not the other way around.
