Monofaction players: Opinions on needing to buy other faction ships?

By hammerghast, in Star Wars: Armada

Just wondering what everyone thinks here. I'm not too experienced with the game yet, barely 6 games played and Ive only bought the rebel half of a core set twice and some fighters. However, in contrast to its not so distant relative X-wing, I've noticed that Armada SEEMS to accommodate a little better players who exclusively collect and play one faction. For example, I've yet to conduct complete card inventories of the whole current range, but I've seen very little posts regarding and heard very little discussion of, say, a Rebel player needing to buy a Gladiator or Victory to get Upgrade X.

Would you guys agree? Exclusively in this context, did FFG get ONE thing more-ish right by segregating upgrades and not, say, forcing us B-wing lovers in X-wing to buy Phantoms as TO THIS DAY they're the only thing to come with a Tactician? -_-

I say "exclusively in this context" because the difference between the core set and standalone card lineups for each ship are a totally different discussion, and differences there were to be expecting, but what I'm seeing here is actually a slightly nice but seemingly overlooked surprise.

things like flight controllers can be very important...

XI7 turbos and leading shots are nice, but not crucial.

Flight Controllers in the Vic

Advanced Projectors in the AF-II...

XI7 in the Neb B

A lot of these things are not an issue, YET.

I say yet, because we havn't seen how they cross over.

If things like Expanded Launchers havn't been complained about only being in the Gladiator yet, its because the Rebels don't have a Black Die thrower..>

Or Advanced Projectors, since the Imperials don't have anything with a Defensive Retrofit slot yet...

Advanced Projectors might be mighty nice on an Imperial Star Destroyer, with its redirect and all... But if its not available in its pack, then you're going to need a Rebel Assault Frigate Mk II to pick that up...

nope the up grade cards are not exclusive and can be used for both sides except the named ships and commanders. and you do need to buy both sides to get them all.

Some are, *at this point in time*

XI7 Turbolasers are but one example - useable by both sides, Yes... But if you're an Imperial wanting them, you need to buy a Rebel Nebulon-B Frigate.

As an Imperial-exclusive player, I don't feel I've been too hampered by my decision to only buy Imperial in terms of what I can build on the Imperial side.

Of course, just having two ships to choose from is a bit of a constraint, but that has nothing to do with the non-exclusive upgrades on the Rebel side, such as the XI7 Turbolasers.

Intel Officer is a really nice upgrade that's available in the Victory and the Nebulon-B. As I already have one Victory in the Core and another in the expansion, I don't want to have to buy more Victories just to get the extra Intel Officers. I don't want to buy a Nebulon B just for two upgrade cards.

Point Defense Reroute, which is presently only available through the Assault Frigate, seems like a nice card if squadrons were currently more popular. But they're not, so not having it is no skin off my nose.

Not having a CR-90 expansion also means that I don't have Leading Shots, which seems like a fairly powerful upgrade card in combination with Victory II-class star destroyers. But I can live without that as well.

You monofaction players make me chuckle

So the general consensus is that, AT PRESENT, you don't come remotely close to hampering yourself to the degree you would by exclusively playing one faction in X-wing. Cool, thanks.

Wow. . . My typing hates me it seems. Oh well.

Indeed, it seems so. FFG is being much nicer to us in Armada.

I wonder if it will last.

Probably not. All of the expansion cards in the ISD and Mon Cal are unique to its box, and they have 18 and 16 respectively. I'm willing to bet something is going to be good on the other.

When the Impstar comes out, both Advanced Projectors, and Leading Shots (for the Deuce) will become much more valuable. Then again, we don't know what upgrade cards it will come with tractor beam might be a blue crit effect, and I'd hope that the Impstar comes with some kind of Defensive Refit (why on earth would they can it a retrofit?)

So for now, I've played around with Leading Shots, wasn't impressed. I've considered XI7s, but redirect is much, much less important to rebels, and my local area runs pretty rebel heavy.

I'm not missing anything with the rebel specific upgrades that I can equip.

Every upgrade card on those expansions is unique? Are you sure?

Really wish FF would release a Admirals and Upgrades card pack, I would buy the crap out of it, and everyone on this forum would too.

So many SW characters appropriate for Armada.

Not gonna happen sorry.

Ffg makes more money if you buy the whole ship. :)

And currently you do not need to cross faction to make the "top tier" tourny lists it seems.

Eh so I was wrong. Last I looked at them was when they were first revealed. So they share two cards.

The other thing to remember is that all the info for the cards are online, if you're playing with friends they'll be unlikely to care whether a copy of 1 card you're using is a printout. FFG sanctioned tournies are a different matter ofc.

Every time I see these photos (for the large ships) I stop and drool a little...

Anyways...

My pal and myself take turns buying ships for our collection. He's a casual player and has no desire to tournament play, while I do. So for now, one core set and buying both factions works for us. But if he was interested in tourney play, right now the only thing stopping us is basically your core items. Honestly, when we play casual, we've yet to need proxy cards. So, I think it's nice to have the cards that are in the opposing fleet's packs, but it's not necessary.
