Team Covenant Aces: Week Two

Team Covenant Aces Season Two Round Two

Week One Results

Logfiles

Some great games in week one. Highlights:

  • Kelvan’s rebel swarm upset Dom’s Scum Ballet list, in a game where our Pirate Lord Kelvan did an excellent job spreading damage around his BBBAA list. Could Dom’s Xizor have perished in a less princely manner, going over debris, rolling a crit, and drawing a Direct Hit to finish him off?!

  • The Battle of the Upgrade Cards -- Matt-Shadowlords quad Gold TLT list versus KO’s elite triple Interceptor Autothruster list -- had the whiff of ‘meta defining’ about it, and the two players gave us a great show. An unfortunate early secondary weapon crit on one of Matt’s Gold’s, combined with some incredible evade dice by Jax (including two natural triple evade rolls to stay alive) was enough for the Autothrusters -- err, KineticOperator, that is -- to pull off a 100-0 whitewash.

  • Current and former World Champions pheaver and Hothie both scored nice wins.

  • And finally your humble reporter’s Lord Vader got painted with ten (10!) stress by Blair’s stresshog and died an ignoble death, not fitting a sith lord.

Commentary: Battle from down under! The Twin Laser Turrets continue to show in lists. It’s a great card! The Shadowlord List really does not like to see those TLTs and I wonder if they will target them first. I’m not sure Morgan really minds but Dash can potentially outfly an Aggressor if it’s 1v1. I think the wearing effect of TLT outshines Dash’s heavy burst damage.

Commentary: First imperial swarm! I love the interaction of Palob and Carnor. Palob steals a focus from Carnor that Carnor won’t let him use. This is a list that IG-88A likes to see. Hothie certainly doesn’t love seening Carnor here who messes with a lot of what palob is looking to do. If Carnor dies though I think Hothie has enough to push it through. I am happy to see a swarm, I think they have a lot of potential in the new wave 7 meta.

Commentary: sozin’s “Lawnmower” list is just crazy (edit: it is Vassal player Serrate's list). I love it. We haven’t seen Rebel Operatives seriously I’m not really sure ever. (I think jeff once wanted RO+ Ion and engine to work.) I think this is a good spot for them. The Rebel version of lawn mowers is probably more defensive than the Scum Version, this isn’t a bad thing. SideSlip has my favorite cards to run together as a star wars nerd, Wookie Gunner and Bossk crew. That should not be legal. The best part is they work really well together. SideSlip has a lot of guns at his disposal so it will be interesting to see how long the RO’s live and deal out strong steady damage vs the greater burst of SideSlip. I like the Dampeners a lot although I don’t know if they’ll play great this match.

Jake Farrell + Chardaan Refit + Push the Limit + Veteran Instincts

Wild Space Fringer + Heavy Laser Cannon

Wild Space Fringer + Heavy Laser Cannon

(100)

Commentary: Dom’s list just looks mean. There’s a lot of cheap HP and no good decisions on who to attack. Jake is great 1v1 but is just annoying early. The Fringers aren’t terrible late because of the turret they bring. Jeff is running some insane firepower. If he gets some decent strikes in this game may be over. That’s harder to set up than you’d think and initiative will be pretty huge. All I want in this world is NDru to shoot those Cluster Missiles

Commentary: This so most people are on Deathrain being the go to Punisher. Paul bucks that trend and goes Redline. That’s a cool looking Redline. Here’s why; Double Target lock, spend to fire missiles, spend second to modify, get FCS, fire second cluster missile. Awesome. That’s one big annoying ship that is begging to be shot at. Bear in mind 2 of the best ships when they’re ignored are a Doomshuttle and Soontir. I know I took a second to get to Blair but 5 ship Rebel with control is great and so long as he can burn Soontire down somehow he’s got a very good shot to win on pure firepower. It’s just hard to nail soontir down, so that Stress Hog better be ready

KineticOperator

Miranda Doni + Twin Laser Turret + Extra Munitions + Shield Upgrade + Conner Net + Luke Skywalker

Corran Horn + Push the Limit + Engine Upgrade + R2-D2 + Fire-Control System

(100)

Commentary: So, hitpoints and firepower vs control and burst. Kinetic has 2 ships that repair themselves and can play the arc dodge game. Kelvan simply tackles a ship and lets the B’s murder. This list will require Kinetic to fly perfectly but if he does he probably wins. But one turn with concentrated fire may win Kelvan this game. If I weren’t playing this I’d pick my list but I have such a hard time thinking I’ll beat Kinetic in a list that seems so up his alley.

Scum and Villainy Prediction

Ricky: Kinetic (not very confident)

Lyle: kinetic

I'm very interested to see how the K-Wing + E-Wing list by KineticOperator performs. I was playing around with lists and suddenly just wanted to fill Miranda up to her ears with stuff and fly her with Corran Horn to see how it worked out.

Glad to see a K sneak in! Is the shield upgrade worth the 4 points on Doni? I know there's a little synergy there, but it feels like another bomb would be so good. I assume you guys pick lists before you know opponent lists? KO lists looks like it would completely shred most of the pre-7 2-ship options.

I messed with it a lot before the K dial was revealed and it's very solid. I prefer a more defensive Corran and a more offensive Miranda. But that is a lot of dice coming her way.

Would it be feasable to post the scores next to the logs for the non-Vassal crowd? Thanks.

The use of Luke on a TLT Miranda seems crazy to me. It's insurance against the TLT missing, but at that point you've already made two attacks with three dice. I'm not sure Luke will really earn back that 7 point investment.

Never considered Luke or Gunner on Miranda with TLT but it could be sweet if you are allowed to use Luke after missing with the second TLT attack. I think we might need FAQ clarification. I seem to recall that munitions failsafe only works if BOTH cluster missile attacks fail.

Edit: PhantomFO ninja'd me. The ruling is unclear but seems possible that Miranda could nerf her second TLT attack to regen a shield and hope for a miss and then use Luke for a freebie primary attack.

I'm a comp. ape so I don't know how to run the vassal or watch the logs but I do like to check out the matchups and read the analysis. Thx star dudes.

This is exactly what I was thinking of earlier today for gunner/luke on a TLT Miranda.

I suspect the Miranda+TLT+Luke combo is designed to be a sneaky Range 1 monster (no spoiler here as Kelvan is smart enough to know this).

If I know Kinetic, I know he likes clever combo's that rely on great positioning..

So:
1. Miranda positions herself at R1 to one ship (B-Wing) and Target Locks it whilst being R2-3 of another (harder to hit target like an A-Wing)

2. TLT's into A-Wing

3. Misses

4. Luke Skywalker Primary Attack into R1 B-Wing
5. Drop a Shield, add an Attack Dice then throws 4 with Luke Skywalker+TL into the B-Wing.

Seems exactly like something Kinetic would do!

*Edit - Removed gaining a Shield

Can Miranda do both in the same turn?

Can Miranda do both in the same turn?

Nope, the card (Miranda's) says "once per round" and "either."

However, it does have an interaction with gunner/luke in that you can take the TLT at a high risk target like an A-Wing or Interceptor where getting one hit is worth it anyway and if you don't get it can take a primary weapon attack at an easier to hit target or a third attack at the same after stripping tokens.

Yes, we all submit our lists in secret each week. We don't know what we're facing until right before this post goes up.
