Elephant in the room

No it's not a new card,

I'm currently playing in a small meta in the UK. Given the rules of the game (3 of each named card max) we've noticed that some players have not been able to build their "decks of choice" owing to not really being able to afford 3*core set and 3*chapter packs.

Owing to this, we have instituted the following rule:

"providing you own at least one of the card, you can proxy it as if you had three in your deck building."

Sadly, we're also getting to the point where we think joining the Nights Watch (and running our own storyline league, official tournies and the like) and we're not sure we would be wholy obeying the ToC's (as much as we think we're upholding the spirit of the game) if we were to try and join.

Are there any other groups out there who allow proxies and what is the community "ethos" on this kind of thing.... surely anything that gets people playing (doubled our competitive group from 8 to 16 odd) is a good thing???

This has been an "elephant in the room" for our group for about 2 months.... some sort of cards under the table moment.

I personally like our rule, I'm going to be leavin the group soon (moving to the US) so I'd like to let them know whether it's an acceptable practice or not.

Cheers

Keep in mind that there is no one policing you. If you and your play group agree to it, you're in the clear. In fact, you are free to make these kind of decisions without "losing" status. Just make sure that if anyone outside the usual group shows up, you tell them the "local floor rules" before you start a tourney. Oh, and if you travel to someone else's event, get their rule on proxies before you start a game.

In the end though, it's like The Night's Watch at Craster's: "His roof, his rules."

It shouldn't be an issue in a storyline league because you'll be playing from a limited cardpool anyway, aren't you?

We use the exact same proxy rule in our (admittedly very small) meta. But when I traveled to another meta for a tournament recently, with prize support from FFG, I was careful to build my deck with only cards that I owned or borrowed. I didn't feel right even asking about proxies in a tournament setting.

I would say that casual play is whatever you want it to be. Heck use thumb wrestling to determine first player rather than initiative if you want.

When you start dealing with people outside of your meta that is when you need to start being very careful about full disclosure and willing to adapt to their needs/rules on their territory. When you have a multi-meta event hen I think it becomes doubly important to make sure eeryone agrees with the rules before hand. I'd go so far as to say dropping proxies and instituting a highlander rule would be better than to force a proxy fight (heh) with a group who doesn't use them. Special event tourneys can be a lot of fun.

But ktom has the right of it, as long as everyone agrees there is no real problem... but I would encourage people to buy into the game more heavily, FFG does need to make money, as do your FLGS and if neither does AGoT may disappear from your neck of the woods as being unprofitable.

The storyline League play is a single core set and then restricted chapter pack purchases. IT shouldn't be a problem for everyone to play with the actual cards they own.
