How do you think the game would be different if...

Nobody would really bother with Soontir Fel and Interceptors as a whole wouldn't get much play.

Tycho would also suffer..

a-wings in general would suffer

PTL is actually one of the most interesting upgrades out there because it comes with heavy restrictions (not just the stress, but ships without sensors lose their ptl when they cannot perform any actions because blocking/obstacles etc.) that completely change the way you play

compare to predator, which is just a re-roll (yawn)

It would make pilots with built in action economy that much better. Vader and Jake for example would be more powerful because they could take 2 actions instead of just the 1.

Super Dash would never have seen the EU, Kyle, PtL days.

Interceptors and A Wings would either be useless or have gotten some other card to fill the void where PTL exists.

Keyan would rely a lot more on Stay On Target, which is already decent on him.

Tycho and Soontir would probably have entirely different abilities.

Elusiveness would see a lot more use on Interceptors and A-wings.

I tried talking about this about a week ago (asking how the game would be different and what EPTs you'd take if VI, PTL, and Predator weren't in the game). I didn't get a very positive response. I'm glad to see thus far you're getting better feedback.

Personally, I think it would open up the design space for A wings quite a bit. Right now they still feel tethered to PTL, and while the A Wing Test Pilot card allows them to take a second EPT as well, just imagine if they could take 2 non-PTL epts... You'd see outmaneuver and lone wolf and other interesting combinations all the time. Heck you might even see some Outmaneuver + Opportunist builds, especially if they're coupled with Wes or a Sensors Jammer ship.

People have been talking about "power creep" lately, and honestly I think PTL was the first big instance of power creep in this game. Since then every EPT has had to compete with it, and really most of them have fallen short. Only a few have withstood the test, and only because they were equally amazing. I don't think Predator, for example, would have ever been made without PTL paving the way for it.

Edit: added a little clarification.

The only reason I could see for removing PTL is incorporating it into the base mechanics of the game; That is, once per turn, when a ship performed an action, it could perform one additional free action and gain a stress token. Of course, that would require a fair amount of re-balancing (Things that have green turns or make turns green (i.e. R2 and Unhinged Astromech would both be amazing, for instance).

To be honest, I don't get the hate PTL has gained recently. It's an interesting upgrade which opens up powerful options while allowing for counterplay. If PTL were removed, we wouldn't be seeing lesser EPTS getting (much) more play- We'd just see fewer EPTS, period. So, Super Dash and Fel wouldn't see play- We also wouldn't see Interceptors besides Turr and Jake. Dash and Corran would still be there, just taking different upgrades (Corran+VI is still solid, as is Lone wolf Dash).

Wait ptl as powercreep? Wasn't that wave 2? (Awing expac)

Surely, the dethroning of the mighty marksmanship should have gone down in history as powercreep :P

Let's be frank, things like ptl and the being only seem like creep because the options they're trumping were quite bad to begin with

If there was nothing on ptl's level we simply wouldn't see epts being used (just cost efficient generics)

People have no idea what power creep is on these here forums...PTL did not replace any comparable upgrade when it was released, nor has any upgrade card replaced PTL. It was released at the same time as the ships intended to get the most use from it, and it continues to be the go-to upgrade for those ships 3 years later. In other words, its the exact opposite of power creep. The Blue B's are an example of powercreep as they instantly replaced Rookies as the go-to swarm ship. Phantoms were power-creep as they instantly replaced Interceptors as the go-to arc-dodging ship. PTL is PTL.

I don't see how PTL is power creep...
