Starting X-Wing, purchase advice

By Crovax20, in X-Wing

Greetings, I have finally decided to give up my staunch resistance of buying any X-Wing. I got into Armada a while ago and I'm really enjoying that, but the little fighter tokens really are making me itch to actually play dogfights with said fighters.

However since I'm pretty late to the scene, I'm not really sure what to buy to give me some reasonable 100 point lists. I do know that I would prefer to play with around 2-4 ships and I favor playing Empire (thats my Armada fleet as well). I know that a will need to get at least 1 x-wing core set. I've put aside a 150 euro budget to kickstart my collection. Minus the core-set that wil leave me with about 120 euro to spend on ships.

So what should I be getting for sure, if I'm looking to make 2-4 ship lists. At first I was just planning on buying just about 1 of every empire release (minus the bigger ships), but I reckon for list building you probably end up purchasing some ships multiple times...

Thanks for the help.

Good timing a tremor in the force tells me there is a new base set coming out soon

say on Star Wars toy day Sept 4th might be worth waiting until then to see whats happening

Yes I have realised this, and my plan was to have my second core set purchase be the new one later in the year.

If you're planning on going exclusively Empire:

1) TIE Interceptor

2) Decimator

3) Imperial aces

4) TIE Fighter

5) Lambda class shuttle

You may want to get a StarViper for authothrusters unless you can acquire it some other way.

Rapscallion's list looks pretty solid to me. I might throw get a Firespray before the shuttle, much as I love shuttles and much as the Scum Firesprays are better than the Imperial variety.

^THIS^ I would like this post but I am out of likes for the day. :(

Since it seems that 1st edition is coming to an end best for your wallet to wait for 2nd edition. Believe me you will want to take it easy on your wallet when you first start. ^_^

We will know more on the 4th. :o

The entire game could turn on it's head with the release, I(we) haven't for example seen anything else but the core so who knows what they are going to release, for the sake of a week it IS worth waiting but it's your money

Best Plan. As of now you can just consider the 1st edition core set a $40 expansion pack with a lot of extra cardboard that you don't need. 1st edition core set went from a 1-3 recommended purchase to a 0-1 purchase.

This is a good list. I would get a Firespray over the Shuttle, but for your budget, you can probably get both if you don't plan on buying a second core set straight away on September 4th.

The Bomber, Punisher, Defender and Phantom are more niche, so you can easily do without them for a while.

You will really, really want some autothrusters if you want to actually use your Interceptors. I imagine they are quite expensive on Ebay.

I don't think I'd agree with 0-1. It gets you extra X-Wing and TIE Fighter pilots that are found nowhere else, as well as giving you three ships for a very good price, and gives you extra dice, thus meaning you don't have to buy an overpriced dice pack. I would say the old standard was 2 old core sets and the new standard is 1 old core set and 1 new core set.

Defenders always defenders some people will call you mad but if you can master that ship you'll be able to outfly anyone.

One of the old and one of the new core sets is an option if you can trade the rebel stuff with someone.

Decimators are a solid big ship.

Honestly your gonna end up buying at least one of each eventually we all do.

Welcome to the game and the forums.

You won't want the extra T-65 X-wing. The T-65 is gasping its last breath. You maybe want Biggs and Luke and you can get an Expansion pack for Wedge, but no you won't want three T-65 X-wings ever.

Once the T-70 comes out, this is all the T-65 will be good for.

too offensive to show (along with E-wings)

who know if and when the new core set will be announced... and how long until it hits the shelves.

Buy why you think you need now and get as much experience as you can playing. if a new core set comes out it will only add to your possible combinations

Not if he's going empire the tie fo really has no place it's losing out on cost to the tie/ln and losing out on killing power to the interceptor.

Yes but the core set isn't even announced yet... and normally the time between announcement and product on the shelves isn't that short e.g. time from official wave announcement to shipping is at-least 6 months.

Tei swarms are still cool fun to play no matter what :)

Because of the way upgrades are spread around a midst the sets, you may end up playing 2 factions. Or you can just proxy the cards you don't have. These 2 are the most important upgrades for Imperial players that don't come in any Imperial sets:

Engine upgrade:

Millenium Falcon comes with 2

Hound's tooth comes with 1

Autothrusters, these make Interceptors very hard to kill:

Star Viper comes with 2

Again, you can proxy them but Autothrusters are almost mandatory on Interceptors now because of how good they are for the cost.

The expansions I would recommend in this order for getting the most use for what you pay. Many of these expansions include upgrades that work superbly with other imperial ships, so every next one you buy will make the previous purchases better:

  1. Imperial Aces - Comes with neat pilots and upgrades for any ship. Push the Limit is the pinnacle of elite talents in most cases. And Tie Interceptors have the best green maneuvers to reduce the stress.
  2. Tie Interceptor Expansion - The upgrades in this one are very niche, but what you want out of this are the 2 Interceptor Ace pilot cards. Bam, now you can field 3 elite Interceptors, fragile but fun.
  3. Slave-1 Expansion - The Firespray, fun to repaint. Comes with great upgrades like gunner, and stealth device, and veteran instincts. The Stealth devices are great on Interceptors with Autothrusters.
  4. Tie Phantom - A very fun ship, and also comes with great upgrades like Recon Specialist, Tactician, and Fire Control System. These upgrades are what you need to make large ships awesome.
  5. Lambda Shuttle - This is possibly the greatest ship in the game, it makes great use of upgrades that come from the above expansions to make great combos.
  6. Tie Fighter Expansion - An extra one is good for filling out lists. Comes with some good pilots that are still useful despite the meta moving on.
  7. Tie Punisher - Brand new, makes great use out of the upgrades you get from the above sets. Slave-1 came with Seismic charges. Proxy Cluster Missiles.
  8. Buy a 2nd Slave-1, Phantom, Lambda or more Tie Fighters - A naked 33 point Bounty Hunter is surprisingly effective.

Now, you may want to play as Darth Vader in his Tie Advanced. Without the upgrade cards that come with the Imperial Raider, he's not worth his points. But you can still have fun with him. If that is what you want, ignore the above and buy a Tie Advanced first. The Tie Advanced comes with some decent upgrade cards like Swarm Tactics and Cluster Missiles, so it's not a total waste. You can probably find a way to make him work, feel free to proxy the Tie/x1 and Advanced Targeting Computer upgrades. The Imperial Raider is for epic play only so I can't recommend it. I have one and I enjoy it, but I got it for 31 bucks off the msrp with free shipping and tax free, so do your best to try and get a deal.

Tie Bomber is for very specific lists, don't buy it until you have one in mind.

The Decimator is a lot of points. It can make good use of the upgrades you've acquired. Even Daredevil can be useful here. I'd hold off on this until you get other essentials first.

I would not buy a 4th Interceptor. There's basically one list you can do with 4 Interceptors, and it ends up being weaker than 3 Interceptors because of lack of upgrades. Likewise, don't buy more than 1 Tie Advanced. Buy an Imperial Raider instead of a 2nd Tie Advanced. It will only cost you 60 bucks more!

Tie Defender - Just stay away from this please. They really dropped the ball on this one. It is bad, really bad. The only decent thing about the pack is the Predator and Outmaneuver epts. Just proxy Predator when you need it, no one will blame you. The Firespray in the Slave-1 expansion is better than a Defender in every way that counts.

Instead of buying the subpar Imperial Ships just for completionism, start buying another faction!

Your Firesprays can be used in Scum and Villainy faction lists if you pick up the Most Wanted Expansion. And Scum ships come with useful upgrades.

Kihraxz fighter comes with Predator

M3-A Interceptors come with Mangler Cannon and another Stealth Device.

Star Viper comes with 2 Autothrusters, Calculation, and Accuracy Corrector

Hound's Tooth comes with Engine Upgrade, Lone Wolf

also look out on e-bay people sell promo cards they got at tournaments ... things like push the limits and reckon specialist can be bough with out having to get a whole ship set just for 1 card

That's a good idea too. Watchout for price gouging though, the Ebay sellers know which cards are valuable, so don't expect to pay less than 8 bucks for an Engine Upgrade. Push the limits comes in Imperial Aces. The ones that come in the box should be good for him for now.

If you felt like buying 2 engine upgrades, Remember the Millenium Falcon comes with 2 and can sometimes be found for 20 bucks, and comes with many more upgrades.

If you want to save scratch, buy expansions off ebay, but for now avoid the individual cards. In my opinion.

I am very late to this. I could not wait any longer to get this game so i just got a few things tonight, now I have to wait for it to arrive.

Got a few friends interested in playing, see how it goes.

Any recommendations for someone new to this?

Thanks!

I just picked up 3 PTL alternative art promo cards for 5€ inc postage and 2 recon specialist alternative art promo cards for 4.50€ inc postage

they are cards my son and I use a lot so it was well worth it.

mostly the pilot alternative art promo cards sell for a lot

edit as far as i known engine upgrade has not been released as a promo card

One thing I've learned about Imperial players.... you can never have enough Tie Fighters lol

Once the T-70 comes out, this is all the T-65 will be good for.

(along with E-wings)

I never suggested getting three T-65s, just that 2 old core sets used to be the standard go-to amount but isn't anymore.

But besides, the part about the T-65 gasping it's last breath really is just your opinion. Alex Davy has said he wants to give the X-Wing a bump and I'm sure something will be in the works for it. They're not going to leave the ship that the game is named after lying in the dust, regardless of whether there is a newer version available or not. People want to play Luke, Wedge and the others.

Honestly I would wait on any purchases. I think it is a near certainty that FFG will have a full article up one week from tomorrow that will tell us what else is going to be released along with the new starter.

My best guess is that there will be some goodies that we haven't seen yet (pilots, upgrades, etc) from what I expect to be the accompanying expansions for the T70 X-Wing and the TIE/FO.

I do not expect the original core to become irrelevant as FFG has shown a continued willingness to keep existing ships relevant.

Experienced players will be able to give solid advice in short order once more info is released. If you can wait another week it will be in your best interests.
